Westminster Politics

Oh the irony.

Holy fecking shit

I'm going to make an outlandish claim here but as they keep using the Putin strategy, I bet within the month they use it as a stick on green issues. They'll claim relying on renewables is dangerous and playing into Putins hands or something.

Honestly this should be such an easy government to defeat for Labour. If this isn't the end of the Tories I despair.

My recollection of Neil Kinnock was that he was responsible for trying to root out the far left from not just the Labour Party but also in public office.

And while he was never able to win a GE, he did pave the way he for John Smith and then Tony Blair

TBH those who I knew, who knew him well, described him as a bit of a windbag!

Yes, Kinnock took the fight to and did grapple with Hatton and others on the extreme left and did he help clear a path for New Labour and for that he was given credit. However, as the then leader he missed the chance of ousting the infighting Tories after the downfall of Maggie and that was partly down to his tendency for extended oratory. John Smith/Tony Blair's path could have been made smoother and come more quickly if Kinnock had 'carpe diem' ... just an opinion!

Guessing its what the right of the party were doing to finish Corbyn

I wonder how involved in it Starmer was or whether he just stood by and got his timing right.

This is exactly what the Tories are waiting for. If it brings down Starmer or fractured the Labour Party in any way they’re going to call a GE and enjoy another 5 years.

Well he was Welsh...

Two points on this.
1 Can we trust Al Jazeera? I've never watched a program on their channel.
2 How many people are actually going to watch it? As I've said before I don't watch them and don't know anybody else who does.
You don't have to worry about #2. If it's harming enough to Labour it will find its way into mainstream UK media in no time whatsoever.

I don't think he was involved otherwise we'd have heard elements of it by now. I think they planned on backing Watson but he made his moves too boldly and so they turned to Starmer.

Its fairly easy to spot those most involved as they've all conveniently left politics suddenly.

Al Jazeera is a fantastic news organisation that tends to cover stories from around the world that often get little or no coverage here in the UK.
I’d sooner watch their news than the BBC for example, and if you haven’t watched their channel then you’re missing out.

You don't even need that much of an evidence. No one in Labour can even mention Palenstine. It's a fecking joke.

Feels like all this Tory policy is just a quick course correction to position the Tories for an election.

Cut taxes and it damages Labours funding for election promises. Suddenly Labour may have to propose tax rises and even if they don't it'll be easier for the Tories to argue they're more likely with Labour.

Bad government policy but probably wise campaign strategy.

Woah woah woah, no need to be antisemitic!

The thing with the Al Jazeera stuff... it's not all in the past, this stuff has been in turbo mode since Starmer took the leadership and is still happening now.

Left wing members are being purged and blocked from making any progress in the party... it's grim. If your face doesn't fit, the party will do whatever they can to get rid of you with a fully complicit media that will either actively help or just turn a blind eye.

The episode last night will barely get a mention in main stream media... would that be the case if it was instead critical of the left of the party? I suspect if Zarah Sultana had been incriminated in some way, they would all be reporting it. Journalism in this country is worse than a sham and our democracy is terrible for it.

I’ll be honest I have absolutely no idea where the logic is in government cutting taxes and NI while the BoE raises interest rates.

That is because there is no logic at all.
We have the ridiculous situation of the independent BoE tasked with reducing inflation to the target sent by the government.
While at the same time the government increasing inflation by pumping more money into the economy.
And not only that. Borrowing more and more money to fund tax cuts.

The value of the pound has been and will continue to drop resulting in pretty much everything costing more.
It is a massive gamble by Liz Truss. A gamble that no other government is seeking to follow. And a gamble that is bound to cost each and everyone of us and our children more and more.

The higher rate tax cut is certainly targeted help for a segment of society.

A budget for massive borrowing. Let's have a party, we can pay for it tomorrow. And the day after, and the day after that.

and when they lose the election will pivot straight into blaming Labour for not balancing the budget on day 1. We've just kicked out a long term Conservative government in Australia, from day 1 they claimed Labor hadn't done enough to cut government spending.

Good quote from the Fabian Society...but messed up with a bad typo:wenger:

Andrew Harrop, General Secretary of the Fabian Society comments:

"This was the most ideological, unequal and reckless budget Britain has ever seen. The best paid people in the country just saw their marginal tax rates cut by 6.25 per cent while millions cannot afford to hear or eat.

"The chancellor knows there is no evidence that trickle ‘down boosts’ ordinary living standards. His unfunded tax cuts for the super-rich and the most profitable companies will be paid for by all of us through higher debt and taxes for generations to come."

Most can see this for the scorched earth budget that it is right? A Tory fire sale so they have a stick to beat Labour with in a couple of years when they get ousted.

That is what will happen. But I was wrong when I said 'let's have a party', the party is only for well-off people, for everyone else it's 'let's watch the rich having a party'.

It’s so he (and other senior Tory colleagues) will keep their banker & billionaire friends happy, so when they get kicked out at the next GE or Leadership contest they’ll be able to fall into the financial services or consultancy roles and such.
Also because Labour are too scared to reverse any policy if ever they do get in power for fear of being hit with the ‘Labour raising taxes’ narrative.

Yes, they will ram through a range of policies to set themselves up for plum jobs post-election loss and then claim if Labour doesn't slash welfare spending then the deficits and debt are all labours fault. In Australia we are just a couple years ahead of you. We just found out that our Conservative PM (basically a religious zealot version of Johnson) also appointed himself to 5 ministerial positions in secret so he could try to run government by himself. You folks have no idea what is going to come out after they lose. Conservative governments worldwide are on a march to burn functioning governments to the ground.

Both the pound and the FTSE falling significantly. I would have thought investors would be looking to gain from a short-term bounce in the the economy, but apparently not.
Suspect they are spooked by the fact that BOE raised 0.5% when a lot of people expected 0.75% and the OBR report wasnt issued with the mini budget
