Westminster Politics

It's economic stupidity, borrowing for tax cuts to buy votes with money half of which will be spunked on foreign-made goods or travel abroad. If we have to borrow for growth we should be looking to improve infrastructure, go completely renewable and improve the productivity of our own industries.

Is that not a form of socialism?

I am socialist to a degree but I don't think those particular policies would be unique to socialism personally, I could imagine the more sensible Tories would agree, or even fascists might want a nation's money to be invested in such a way for the benefit of many. What it definitely isn't is Thatcherism, don't get me started on that :)

After 12 years of appalling Conservative government, where they've ripped us out of the EU, shifted us to the far right, demonised essentially all immigrants and helped bring us to the precipice of breaking the country up, I can't believe people are still saying this both sides stuff.

1. Windfall tax on energy companies
2. Ending the Rwanda policy
3. Providing the same rights to all employees from when they're employed

Off the top of my head.

You can think they're not enough, fair enough. You can think Starmer is a vapid twat and again, fair enough. You can also think that he won't actually fulfil his promises and again, I'd say the same.

But to constantly bang the drum that both sides are exactly the same is just inaccurate and frankly a bit pointless.
Totally agree the Tories have ruined the country and lied for 12 years.

I think if Starmer hadn't lied in the Labour leadership election more people would trust him to be a positive force in UK politics. As it stands, the perception is he's just another lying career politician.

This in no way let's the Tories off the hook.

I mean at least she's not blaming nato for Russia invading Ukraine anymore.

Surprised she's not deleted the post yet like her ones about looking forward to celebrating the death of Blair

I wonder if they will deselect her before the next election as she's been absolutely awful

I think the main problem is that there is no political will across the wider establishment for anything other than disaster economics. They’re absolutely fine with looting the country for all it has and getting rich by making others poor.

It’s complicated growing the economy, it takes expertise, a lot of hard work and most importantly of all - time. Even if you had someone come to prominence who has all the answers and a clear plan of how to implement them, they would be rejected because nobody wants to take politics seriously anymore. It’s just entertainment nowadays and about nothing more than how you and your associates can get as rich as possible as quickly as possible.
Yep would agree with this.

So I'm guessing this big energy support package they're trumpeting is a case of giving private energy companies hundreds of billions, landing the country in ever more debt, and doing absolutely nothing to prevent the same thing happening next year again?

That's not a guess it's a fact. The CEO's of the major fuel companies ort to be investigate for war profiteering. Allegedly.

Anyone on here a fan of trickle down economics and care to try to defend it?

Since you asked so nicely.

This woman confirms that she really is a complete moron - Who will save the UK from the madness?

Truss says she is prepared to be unpopular as she sets policies to deliver growth
Sky News is broadcasting an interview with Liz Truss by Beth Rigby, the Sky political editor.

Q: Why is it fair for people to take the pain of higher energy bills when energy companies are making such big profits?

Truss says the plan to deal with energy bills will cost the government money. The government also has a plan to guaranteed long-term energy supply, she says.

She says she would not allow the burden to fall on people and businesses.

Q: But you would rather the taxpayer foots the bill than business?

Truss says on Friday the chancellor will explain how this will be paid for.

The energy plan is likely to reduce inflation by five percentage points, and encourage growth, she says.

Q: Labour’s policy, a windfall tax, is backed by 68% of the public. You are prepared to be unpopular, aren’t you.

Truss replies: “Yes, I am.”

Q: But people care about fairness too, don’t they?

Truss says that is an argument of the left. She says, by keeping taxes down, she will grow the economy. And that will lead to tax revenues going up

Truss says she does not accept the claim that tax cuts will not help people generally.

People care about things like seeing roads built, or getting better mobile phone coverage, she says.

Truss says the UK has had low growth because it has had relatively low capital investment.

Yet the UK has one of the best financial centres in the world, she says.

She says she wants to see that money “put to good use across the country”.

Q: What is your message to people worried about interest rates going up, and about a tough winter?

Truss says her government will be taking every step and straining ever sinew to get the economy going.

We will get through this, she says.

And that’s the end of the interview
I will wait to see her time as a real prime minister but from a non-UK person, I don't trust her quality to stop UK madness or to be a good prime minister. Instead of that, I even think she will do some crazy kinds of stuff during her reign.

You're right, smiling at the funeral was very disrespectful.

Things are back to normal....let's feck the poor over again after spunking millions on the Royals. Christ, make it stop.

Kwarteng will also announce new support to get over-50s into work, after a sharp increase in economic inactivity in that age group since the Covid-19 pandemic, with a significant number citing stress or mental health reasons.

The Treasury has found that economic inactivity in the over-50s is contributing significantly to shortages in the jobs market, one of the key issues driving up inflation.

Starting to hit their own voter base now.

The more I hear about Liz Truss the more it is becoming obvious that she is trying to be Margaret Thatcher MK2.
And I am pleased that she is prepared to be unpopular.
Be careful what you wish for Liz...

Yeah she's been trying the whole Maggie cosplay but in reality she's just another ERG sock puppet.

Not sure what conversations took place when he dropped out of the leadership election and backed sunak but I suspect most other members lobbied for his support and i would guess several would have made him promises of prominent position if he backed them... no doubt if Sunak had won he would now find himself in one of the top roles but part of politics is backing the right person at the right time

If he spends the next 6 months backing the leadership I am sure he will find himself back in cabinet at the next reshuffle / opportunity - (Suspect he wont though and more likely he tries to pick which team to join (Sunak or Wallace) for the likely leadership race in 2024 and not being in this cabinet might be a bonus for him in the long run)

I actually remember Thatcher being elected leader and it was widely said she was a mere figurehead puppet for the likes of Keith Joseph who were so obviously bonkers to the right they were unelectable. Feck me when it came to being bonkers right she turned out to be the top dog with big teeth after all. We're still suffering from her today in so many ways.

Not really a comment on Truss by the way, I don't think she's remotely up to the job and will be out before the next election anyway.

Sorry yes meant then. Wonder if the Government will get told off again by the Speaker for leaking stuff early.
they certainly wont be told off for leaking the OBR report https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62970803

Im guessing there will be somethingthey have not yet leaked - increase in tax free allowance or a cut in basic rate for example

That was exactly what she was assumed to be, and it fooled many 'wet' Tories and Labour completely. If ever there was 'their own' man... it was this woman!
All Truss has to do to follow in Maggie's footsteps is to do exactly what she says she going to do, stick to her guns, 'this lady's not for turning, etc. The certainty this produced (whether you liked it or not) was a kind of 'balm' to the economy that allowed it to recover.

Of course, it did for her in the end, so focused on 'doing her thing', she didn't see Heseltine (and to a lesser extent Clarke) effectively 'sneak up' and knife her in the back, ironically because they thought she was going to take us out of the EU, over the Maastricht treaty.

Labour of course didn't 'seize the day'. Kinnock (although heart probably in the right place) blustered and talked everybody's socks down and allowed the old tory mantra to be enacted... "that he who wields the knife never wears the crown"... and John Major sneaked into power. Major's victory however inside the Tory party lead to what effectively was a Tory 'civil war' and eventually the emergence of ERG... and the rest as they say, is history!

Let's hope Starmer's heart and his mouth are in sync, he will have to be on the front foot with Liz Truss!

My recollection of Neil Kinnock was that he was responsible for trying to root out the far left from not just the Labour Party but also in public office.

And while he was never able to win a GE, he did pave the way he for John Smith and then Tony Blair
