Westminster Politics

After first denying he was even present he’s now trying to twist things as if it was work related (despite the invite clearly stating it was a party). They even had food & drinks being set up on tables outside. The British public is being shafted by a BJ!

I see that absolute bellend Rees Mogg is now saying the rules at the time were probably too harsh and the inquiry needs to consider that. Trying to absolve Johnson’s behavior that way.

The UK public need to wake up and realise the Tories never have and never will give one flying feck about them.

Hypothetically let's say it was work related in appreciating the hard work his colleagues had done during the pandemic, what makes them think that they are more entitled than the general who were also working hard during the pandemic like the nhs staff, like the home delivery drivers, supermarket staff, where was there lavish garden parties for working hard during the pandemic?

As always with Tories it's one rule for them and another for everyone else.

Boris claims he knew nothing about the invites and thought it was a work meeting in his garden. He went down to rally the troops and thank them. That is his defence!

Conveniently, after yesterday's shit show, a public opportunity to demonstrate adherence to COVID guidelines magically appears for Johnson today as he cancels this trip to Lancashire. We thought New Labour's spin machine was shameless but if you made a version of The Thick of It about this lot it would be like a Carry On film.

I'm not sure that "When we told you that you weren't allowed to visit your dying mother we were probably just being unnecessarily tough" is a particularly compelling electoral argument.

It's somewhat ironic and hypocritical that in one breath he can question the draconian nature of a law put into place to protect public health, while supporting the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill which all but bans public protest in the next. If he and the rest of the Tory cronies are such libertarians, they should have no issue rebelling against that bill.

Can't stand the guy. My old home/parents MP.

Total joker and by all accounts a nasty piece of work. Been rumours for years about how shitty he treated those beneath him.
Isnt he the scumbag who despite being born in Warsaw and a native polish speaker claimed thousands in expenses for polish lessons?

He is yeah. Claimed he was fluent in 2019, then said he wasn't when justifying the expenses. And the one who was pleading via WhatsApp for middle east paid positions as he couldn't afford to put his kids through school. Also Known as the honourable member for Saudi Arabia after paid visits there in 2015.

You mean Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson is not fighting my corner? And not even the father of Sixtus Dominic Boniface Christopher Rees- Mogg?

Seems very convenient that a story has come out today about a Chinese Spy who hasn't actually been found to have done anything and the securities have known about for years.

Almost like the Tories are trying to get Boris out of the headlines.

My thoughts as well.
And wasn't it interesting to see Priti Patel trying to assure us that MI5 had such wonderful and robust processes in place to identify such things.... and there was me wondering why these processes have allowed this lady to be working 'at the heart of government' for the last 5 years.
Or am I being too hard on her.

Indeed.
And if it was work related, then why was his wife there.
You can make the arrangement, as the Tories are, that anything in Downing Street is work related.

And when did it becomes acceptable to bring alcoholic drinks to work.
Where I worked, that was a stackable offence.

Some of us will remember Yes Prime Minister, where the civil service routinely recommended hiding bad news by announcing the expulsion of twenty five Russian diplomats.

Shafted is right and the mps defending him/it is even more of a shafting.

What an absolute bellwhiff. As bad as bungalow bill wiggins.

In my opinion a lot of this country's problems could be solved if those in Westminister and Whitehall (both politicians and senior civil servants) were held to some of the same standards as rank-and-file public servants anywhere else in the country. If anything akin to the Downing Streets parties happened in a HMRC office somewhere in the regions, heads would roll. Similarly, if it was found that some low-level functionary had used their position to do even a minor favour for a friend or family member (like checking the status of an application) they'd be sacked immediately, in the meantime we have members of the government handing billions of pounds of public money to their mates with impunity. Someone like Boris Johnson likely wouldn't get past the security checks required to take up an entry-level position in most departments - he'd be deemed too open to manipulation due to his financial situation.

Parts of the governing apparatus of this country have been maintained as open air museums/celebrations of the Empire for the last 150 years and successive generations of politicians and senior civil servants have failed to make changes to render them fit for purpose because deep down they're not in it for public service. Half of them are in it for the money and half of them are living out a fantasy of being great Victorian-era statesmen. None of them have any intention of making any changes that would force them to abide by the same rules as the rest of us.

The worst thing is that, as a nation, we've been brainwashed into being in awe of these institutions. Our political system is an outmoded mess which prioritises nostalgia and roleplay over being fit for purpose, but any attempt to reform it is seen as an attack on Britain itself. Frankly, if we insist on keeping a system which works this badly and where there is so little real oversight of those in power, it was only ever going to be a matter of time before we elected a government shameless enough to use it to openly rinse us for all we're worth

Almost a little annoyed he will go, whoever is next will be better at covering up being a weasel.

Borris was isolating during this time so he might just wack that excuse for not being there to stop it

Opposition parties really need to make this a broader attack on the Tory party and quit with the laser focus on Johnson. He’s the goose laying golden eggs for them at the moment.
