The way i interpret the difference in formations i believe you are both right.
4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1 are in effect the same formation, the only difference is which type of players are employed and the respective roles they perform within that same system.
Rooney is a second striker and therefore drops deeper more times than getting beyond the front man therefore easily can be perceived as 4-4-1-1. The same applies with 4-3-3 and 4-5-1. My view of 4-5-1 is when the 2 most advanced wide players are generally more midfield providers than goalscorers. If the opposite is true then you have a 4-3-3.
Our current formation for instance could easily be described as 4-2-3-1. With Carrick and Giggs playing deeper and Rooney, Park and Valencia being more advanced behind Hernandez. Others may say 4-4-2, yet others 4-4-1-1.
It's all semantics really, simply a question of how you interpret who performs what role predominantly within games.

Bah no biggie, Sanchez and Modric are next on the radar. £50-60million should seal both. Get on it Fergie!
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Sneijder at United and he's obviously class but if both men said yes, I'd rather we get Modric.
Proven in the English game, and a lot more durable to the types of challenges he'll encounter. Plus, while he doesn't score as much as Sneijder, Modric I feel is a lot more unselfish and works harder which will complement the team.
