Wesley Sneijder

SAF on Sneijder - "Forget it. We are looking at some things but I am not so sure Sneijder will be easy to get. I could pick three or four players to come in but they wouldn't be good enough for us, so there is no point. I would be happy enough [to continue with the present squad]. Maybe I am a bit overloaded in the strikers' positions. The alternatives in midfield are not nearly as strong. But I have a good squad."

I think it's obvious that we're interested in him.

Manchester United Official Web Site - Sir Alex Ferguson under no pressure to buy

Not bullshit from Twitter btw.

He also confirms what we all know - he has his targets but won't panic buy. If he can't get a player that he actually wants he won't go and "do a Liverpool" a spunk £35m on a Geordie thug.

I'm not sure Lynk agrees

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I would love for Sneijder to join us, but I'm not holding my breath. As much as Sir Alex is admitting his interest in that comment, he also writing it off.

So if we don't get Sneijder we'll get no one. I fear that he'll be the next Villa. Lets hope that Cleverley can do a Hernandez.

This might be my muppet self speaking but I think he's doing it to try and show that we're not too interested and have other options and to try drive the price down.

He's definitely changed his tune from the "we're not interested in him at all"

I'm sure he knows exactly what he's doing. There's not a chance he'll make out how badly we want him, that would put Inter in the driving seat. By saying he's happy with the squad it puts us in a much better position. It's obvious he chooses each word very carefully.

Absolutely. It's always been obvious that we're interested in him and Fergie's getting less convincing with every interview he has on the Sneijder issue.

Like many sources had said, he'll come to United but it'll be a long drawn process and I think that's exactly what will happen.

This could be true, but I also think Sir Alex is naturally optimistic about this group of players even if we are not. And don't forget we've spent well over 50 million this summer, I just can't see us spending more. =/

It's been obvious for about 3 weeks.

I see Lynx who has been writing off our interest for the last 3 weeks is now changing his tune and accepting the interest but claiming Ferguson is now writing it off as an impossiblity.

I'm going to maintain my stance that our interest has been strong for weeks and Gill and his team are doing their hardest to push this through, transfers between top clubs of this sort of quality of players don't happen after one conversation. They almost always take weeks of negotiations.

Clear that he's playing games, sending messages to Inter and the player.

It also depends on the context and how it was reported. Imo nothing changed, we re interested but will never fork out 35m for sneijder. We also know that the longer it takes, the longer it will suit sneijder and whoever is interested in signing him. Inter know they must sell sooner or later

SAF:
"...The alternatives in midfield are not nearly as strong. But I have a good squad."

I think he knows our midfield is a bit shit right now tbh. I'll be absolutely amazed if we didn't bring in a quality player.

And about us being overloaded with strikers, if we do play with Sneijder in the hole then it would explain why we need to get rid off a striker or two..

I wish that you're right but I doubt it. In my opinion its pretty the usual 'happy with the squad' excuse used time and time again. I am actually surprised not to see its twin sister 'no value' excuse which tend to follow it soon afterwards.

I'm not writing things off I'm just naturally pessimistic when it comes to transfer rumours because a lot of them are bullshit and media waffle. Say what you like but this statement is the first bit of confirmation that we at the very least looked into it. Otherwise the rumours of bids being rejected, and Sneijder holding out for 250,000 a week have no basis what so ever.

Thats why we've brought in 3 new faces and sold 3 yet also looking to get rid of Gibson and Diouf. He wants a midfielder thats for sure. His just putting out his usual marker, which is we don't deal with ridiculous prices.

SAF: "I keep reading about this, there's absolutely nothing at all to that. First of all I don't think Inter are prepared to sell him anyway. You get conjecture and you get speculation every week in newspapers unfortunately. And we have to answer these for some reason - why, I don't know, but we have to find a reason without adding insult to any particular club, or embarrassing any particular player. There's nothing we can do about it." The United boss said.

Few days later..

Am i the only one who finds SAF comments encouraging..atleast he has recognised we desperately need a CM.

They are encouraging but be careful to expect anything when it comes to his statements. Take everything with a pinch of salt.

He's definitely getting less convincing with every passing interview. I reckon next time he'll tell us that "we're working on a deal". Hopefully anyway.

It's good to see that we're interested in him for sure though.

They may not, but there is no way you can say for certain that they do not. Perhaps that is exactly what is holding up the deal? How are we to know that it isn't if we're definitely in for him and it's been a while since we have?

You've changed your thinking from last week.

When last week Fergie commented that "we're not interested in Sneijder", you attacked everyone who said that Fergie is a known bullshitter regarding these statements.

where did you take that form mate?

He's not going to say phrases like 'crying out for,' 'desperate for' or 'really missing'; this is as much as you'll get out of him.

Fair enough. Still I wouldn't read "I would be happy enough [to continue with the present squad]." as "I'm desperate to sign another CM".

I actually think SAF said the truth - if he won't be convinced he should buy, he won't.
