We're trialling a new newbie system

Most get banned fairly quickly but there was a few more knocking around after yesterday.

There's not that many newbies in the trial yet - ~150. There will be more bad apples as more are added to the trial so be sure to report crap posts as you see them.

The biggest challenge facing the newbie forums is the lack of traffic and consequent lack of engagement in conversation. Logically any attempt to shift people through faster will exacerbate this problem. My own very recent experience of the newbies has been that getting 'likes' was fairly straightforward. Sure, there are posters with huge numbers of posts and few likes, but it's generally pretty easy to see why when you read the stuff they're posting.

I joined a few years ago and only posted half a dozen times before getting dispirited with the whole Newbie idea and giving up. When I decided make an effort earlier this year I got the 10 likes inside a month with about 100 posts. I say this not to blow my own trumpet, but to illustrate the point that although I'm in favour of earlier promotion, making it easier will surely mean that anyone with anything interesting to say will be gone from the newbies in no-time, leaving the "I supported Chelsee last month but Man Utd is more ace" brigade disproportionately represented, and threatening the viability of those forums.

I agree with earlier posters who advocate throwing the newbie forums open for full members to post in should they wish to do so. I really can't see a downside to this given that those forums are crying out for a higher volume of contributions.

There is no technical reason preventing main posters from accessing the newbie forums, but it won't be done. We want full members in the main forums, posting there, not spreading their posting across two different tiers of the caf.

Hi, sorry, hadn't noticed this post before. I realise that it's for you to make the rules on your forum, but I'm genuinely interested to know why you seem so dead set against this idea. It seems like a rule for rules sake - there would seem to be no shortage of posters in the mains, so no real risk of the conversation being significantly diluted if full members were able to contribute to threads in the Newbie's.

In contrast the newbie forums are starving for lack of contributors, and if anything the measures being trialed seem set to make that situation worse not better.

I can understand a lot of what you're saying since I had a very similar experience in the Newbs myself. I think, though, that letting all mains posters post in the Newbs would cause issue with the mains, for example when the same thread is replicated in both forums leading to two parallel discussions. That leaves people repeating the point they've already made across different threads (which already happens to a degree). The Newbs at this point are not so much a separate set of forums as a rite of passage to be endured.

Only just spotted this.
Looks like it may be a bit of a confusing way up the ladder?
Is it working so far?

Happy to lend a hand with scouting if needed.

I've noticed a few more weird posts recently from people that must be newly promoted.
Has it got a bit easier to come up as well?

Not complaining, as a bit of batshittery every now and then cracks me up.

Have you ever thought about giving newly promoted members access to the Newbie forum for a certain period of time, let's say 6 months, so that they can continue discussions there and slowly move over to the mains. When I got promoted, I felt I had some unfinished business in some threads there, which was a bit sad. Just an idea. I could see it adding a lot to the newbie forum without overloading it with everyone from the mains.

I've no idea if that's possible from a technical point of view though.

@Niall, do we have any stats on how many newbies make it up to the mains, but then stop posting? Just wondering whether we might be losing posters who miss the newbies' section, because like joining a new school, your social circle is reset when you do.
Maybe there should be special events where Newbie forums are accessible to Mains contributors. Or a special thread or something. The Newbies can be very good sometimes. As @Niall says you wouldnt want it all the time, but maybe it could work in a structured way. Dunno the technical ifs and buts of that though.

Ahh... Snap. Didn't see your post @Balu but great minds, etc... :)

How about a reverse-trial for full members in the newbies? A limit of 10 posts per day shouldn't affect the quality of the mains, while inject the newbies with much needed vitality.

Has the number of newbies-on-trial been increased? I'm seeing newbies posting all over the place. Not complaining about it, mind - just curious.

How is the newbies nowadays? I know a while back there were reports of it stagnating a bit.

Could we open the Euro 2016 Forum to newbies too? We did that during the World Cup, right?

It is open to the newbie trialists (with the new system constraints applied), but not every newbie. Letting them all in would be counter productive to trialling the new system.

I think we need to find a new thing to support. United was fun under fergie, but I don't think anyone really cares anymore.

1 more year and If Mou hasn't won the treble including the European Cup, the forum should convert to supporting table tennis

Sounds fair. Can't wait until I'm logging into FangBoCafe

I noticed yesterday some dude signed up with what I assume is his full real name. I mean the first thing you get when you google his name would be his RedCafe account. God bless him. I hope the admins hold true to not allowing user name changes.
People who make that mistake are the one exception to that rule.

The worst ones are the ones that have their first name, followed by their birth year, followed by their country. How much sensitive information do you give out, I mean geesh. please dont kill me

Christ. This has been an utter failure already. So much shite to wade through.

Yeah I only meet one of the above categories so therefore am 2/3's less mentally challenged than those you mention following in my footsteps. It's good to see the floodgates open again though.
