We're trialling a new newbie system

Good new introduction. From what I've heard the newbies is a lot quieter than it once was, so allowing them to post more often will probably encourage them to participate more often.

Would it not be easier to make the Newbie forum look a bit more like the Main Forum, with more sub-forums etc?
tried that

because we would promote the better posters, it would leave the forums a bit flat. Obviously the more forums you add, the deader the traffic looks

Like geebs said, quicker promotions and more spread out football forums has lead to less of a community feel down there. I don't think people are as familiar with each other which makes debating/arguing tougher.

Makes sense I guess

This.

It's incredibly hard to get likes as a newbie. When you're at 8 and only need 2 more likes, it'll seem even harder.

It's an absolute piece of piss getting a Like in the Newbies. The Mods and Scouts are out in force (if it's still the same as when I was there). I liked the old system personally.

@Niall, do we have any stats on how many newbies make it up to the mains, but then stop posting? Just wondering whether we might be losing posters who miss the newbies' section, because like joining a new school, your social circle is reset when you do.

From what it sounds like, the newbie system doesn't have too much of a community these days - apparently the general is fairly dead, and it's more just football discussion. It was different a few years ago, in that you came to know a lot more of the posters if you participate in the general, but even then posters are constantly going up, so you're bound to still know plenty once you're promoted.

Hope this idea is implemented.

I spent almost four years in the newbie section which I think is a bit too much. You want to filer out the idiots but as soon as you see a poster who is not trolling and can communicate in a civilized manner, they should be promoted.

Why not open up the newbie sections to all the mains poster? That way newbs can still engage in discussion with the mains posters which should keep them active.

You could also introduce a thumbs up system in the newbs for the mains guys to hit, which would help the mods with liking posts and speeding up the whole promotion process.

I just think the quality of posts in the mains is going to take a hit if too much riff raff is let up too easily. I don't mind not having a few extra good posters in the mains as long as I don't have to read post from a pre-teen who wormed his way up and is now spamming about his dream signings.

I like this idea as well. I think it would be good if we could still participate in the newbies not that I miss it but when I was there a lot of times you would find news before the main forum and some refreshing topics rather than just the mega threads you have to pick through. It would give mains posters a chance to mingle with the newbies as well if they wish.

I also think the newbies is good in the sense that because you get a lot of new posters it keeps things fresh.

Is there any considerable (technical, for all I know) downside to allowing mains posters access to the newbs?

Not advocating it - just curious more than anything.

I would like to advocate it but purely on the basis that I did a post making a lot of transfer predictions in the newbies before the start of the transfer window and I'm pretty sure I've got quite a few right and I'd like to find it.

On the other hand I like the idea of the newbies in the mains and also think they should be able to post threads...just think of the fun to be had.

Just to clarify: I'm not considering the mains-in-the-newbs thing as a measure to promote newbs, or an alternative to the new system.

The reasons stated in this thread (for introducing the new system) seem very sound to me. So it certainly ain't that.

But on the face of it, allowing full members to post in the newbs could have some benefits (some of which have been suggested above).

The question is - again - whether there is a downside to this which makes it a bad idea.

There is no technical reason preventing main posters from accessing the newbie forums, but it won't be done. We want full members in the main forums, posting there, not spreading their posting across two different tiers of the caf.

Yeah interesting, I'll try and dig up some stats on that.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I miss reading the newbie forums, sometimes there's some interesting and amusing stuff in there. I'm glad to see the shift from total segregation to a more cautious, liberal approach.

Another thing is that this would hopefully encourage more non-United fans to join in the discussions and contribute their knowledge and opinion. That's always been one of the best things about the caf.

Have you ever considered closing the forum to new users? Or is more the merrier from a commercial point of view?

Strange suggestion. Are you in the middle of starting your own United forum?

I'm just wondering how commercial revenues is valued relative to atmosphere of the forum. IMO, RedCafe was a lot better before when you knew most of the posters. However, I have to give credit for the way it's been developed technically, what with the automated lineup and score predictions among other things.

I think they go hand in hand to be honest. Although quantifying the atmosphere of the forum is inherently difficult.

I get what you mean, but I think you'll get to know the new posters as well at some point. Although I'll admit I usually pay most attention to posters I already have an idea about.

Ok so I now have 10 likes... But still have limited posts to the main forum?

Is the amount of awful posters with really low post counts at the minute to do with this change?
