Weird things about football that are true but don't sound it

Manchester United have never been winning a Champions League/European Cup final at 90 minutes.

Michael Olise's goal yesterday was the first free-kick scored by France in a competitive match since October 2007.

Uruguay were or are the longest running defending champions of the World Cup for 24 years.
Won in 1930
Didn't participate 1934 amd 1938
None in 1942 and 1946 obviously WWII
Won it in 1950
Lost in the semi final 1954.
So that's the longest ever defending champions record ever totaling 24 years.

Seems a weird way of defining it. That they didn't participate in 1934 doesn't mean that no-one won it. How are you considering them to still be the defending champions?

Italy won in 34 so Uruguay were no longer champions at that point.

I don't know saw it on 'The Chase' this evening. Not to mention the 1924 and 1928 Olympics which they won and were recognized as World Champions hence why they have 4 stars on their national jerseys. Think after 1928 they got rid of World Champions because 1930 was obviously the first World Cup.

Italy also defended it in 38 so found it strange and didn't sound right. Basically Uruguay won the first in 1930, then he said both boycotts in 34 and 38 then won in 1950 but beaten in the semi final 1954 so he said that was the longest defending champions at 24 years but it didn't sound right. Basically they're defending their 1930 title in 1950 because of two boycotts?Strange.
Maybe it could have been the undefeated record of 11 matches in World Cups which came to an end in 1954 in the Semi Final. Was an undefeated record on a global stage for nearly 30 years. Having said that haven't made a final in nearly 75 years.

This might the worst and the weakest era of international football in decades. Back in the 90s and 2000s national teams used to be stacked and full of world class players.

National teams like Spain 2008-12, Brazil 2002 and France 98-00 would blow your mind when it comes to names and just sheer talent that it had. There are still great national teams today like Argentina and Spain but I wouldn't rate them that highly compared to these teams.

Think that's just over familiarity with modern football. Back when all we had was the CL on ITV players like Figo and Zidane would appear a few times a season and blow your mind at how good they are.

Nowadays we see these players and what they do every weekend so by the time the WC comes around you know their strengths and weaknesses so don't get blown away by a great tournament by someone.

In those days, there were like 10 or more Brazilian and Argentinian players hitting 25 goals/assists a season in top European leagues but getting nowhere those national teams. Nowadays...

This can't be true

Europa League 2016
United - Ajax 2-0

Cup Winners cup 1991
United Barca 2-1

Champions League 1999 (it's on extra time, but still it's on regular time)
United - Bayern 2-1

Agree. During that time there weren't as many distractions that we have now. The smart phone alone has changed the dynamics of social interaction and what we can do. Games, movies, information. There is also so many more things to do now in the world then play football. That compete with football. Standard of living is alot higher now.
I'm feel like it ended with Messi, rooney, and Ronaldo. I don't see anyone take over from them. From when I started to watch football in 86 there was always someone new to get excited about. But after Rooney, Messi, and Ronaldo. I don't see anyone at that level. No one that gets me excited. And well that makes me sad. Maybe I'm wrong and we see another surge of talent but I'm not sure. Life has changed so much in the last 15 years. Who knows what the next 15 will be like.

This probably isn’t too shocking but the next game Bruno plays for us, he will equal Luke Shaw’s appearances at 278. Shaw joined us in the summer of 2014, while Bruno joined us in January 2018.

Mbappe surely? His pace and directness has been phenomenal in some pretty big games...

Bruno joined in Jan 2020, but I’m still not surprised.

Hojlund and Zirkzee don't excite you?

During the 2009/10 season, Newcastle had the third highest average attendance in Britain…. They were in the Championship.

Haha. Hojlund would, maybe if we had a top forward for him to learn from like a rvp or rvn. But to throw him into the fire seems like madness. But I'm armchairing it so. Really what do know.

Hans-Jörg Butt (a German keeper) scored 3 CL goals in his career (all penalties). He scored all three against Juventus, while playing for three different clubs (Hamburg, Leverkusen, München)

Im pretty sure united in 74 had the highest attendance in the league. They were in league 2.

I tell people that little piece of trivia all the time. One of my favorite football facts.

I don't why people are finding this so hard to understand.

United have made 5 Champions League / European Cup finals (not UEFA Cups, Cup Winners Cup's etc) - losing 2 of those in normal time to Barcelona (2009 and 2011).

The 3 they won were:

1968 against Benfica. The score at 90 minutes was 1-1. United went on to win 4-1 with extra-time goals from Bobby Charlton, George Best and Brian Kidd.
1999 against Bayern. They score after 90 minutes had been played being 1-0 Bayern of course, with United famously scoring at 90+1 and 90+3 through Sheringham and Solskjaer respectively to turn the game on it's head.
2008 against Chelsea. The score at 90 minutes being 1-1, with United ending up beating them 6-5 on penalties.

Nottingham Forest has won more Champions League trophies than City and Arsenal combined.
Never won the Champions League. Ot's a different cup than the old European Champions Cup, evinced by not beating Swedish semi-pros in the final with million pound players.
