Weird feelings of football

It feels like SAF retired 10 years ago. And these last three seasons without a PL trophy feel so much longer than the period between 02/03 and 06/07. Hopefully the 16/17 season is gonna be this decade's version of 06/07 which is probably the best PL season I can recall!

For me that 02/03 - 06/07 period felt like eternity!

Also, it felt that in that period we were much shittier than we are now, although we always qualified for the CL and finished second or third.

Those 02/03 - 06/07 teams would have won last season. We were beaten by the arsenal invincibles and Chelsea's ridiculous team back then.

Apart from England, no European team has produced good strikers in the last 10 years. Of course, the English ones are always terrible at tournaments.

Gary Neville retired in 2007. He actually retired in 2011  but it just feels like the last 4-5 years of his career never happened

Yeah, I'm the same. I think it feels that way because the teams we lost to in the 2003-2006 period were Arsenal's invincibles and Jose's Chelsea, so the gap between us and the best teams seemed larger, whereas now none of PL teams feel really top drawer so you think one good transfer window and we're back.

Every player at Borussia Dortmund has an uncommon and weird but cool name.

Playing FM as United on match days often seems to result in us playing worse than I think we should...

...which is why I avoid FM on match days.

Pundits always tip Chelsea at the start of the season every year without fail.

United always win the community shield every time they are in it.

The last time we had two 3pm kick offs in a row was in 1992.

every time i watch a reply of a game, instead of live, it ends up 0-0

Robbie Keane has announced his retirement but will be named in the Ireland squad should they qualify for Russia and will start the first game up front as usual.

Ezequiel Garay (or some other similarly-named version of an Argentine we've been linked with at various times over the years) has always played for Valencia.

Paraguay has never not advanced to or advanced past the Quarter-finals of a World Cup (usually by way of a stodgy penalty shootout.)

Yes

Nico Gaitan played for Valencia before joining Atletico Madrid this summer. incidentally, he's still linked to us.

addendum: Nico Gaitan played for Valencia before joining Atletico Madrid this summer. incidentally, he's still linked to us and will be.

Steve Claridge suffers with undiagnosed very mild depression.

I think he's just really dull. When BBC used to have the rights to the football league stuff, I always said to my dad they should start putting up Claridge facts on the screen. Instead of the bit that says "Steve Claridge - 255 career league goals" it should be "Steve Claridge - has attended seven Cliff Richard concerts" or "Steve Claridge - achieved a C in GCSE chemistry" or anything that matches how boring he is.

Now if you'd said Danny Murphy, I might have agreed.

Danny Murphy, especially on TV, looks like he's been forced to go on by his mum, like he's reluctantly doing the school play. On the subject of Claridge, is he truly boring or just saddled with a perennially discombobulated tone of voice? I kind of miss him. They had Mathew Upson on the Monday Night Club this week and he was self effacing, intelligent and modest. God he was boring. Made me actually want Rory Smith to have more than his fair share of speaking turns.

Stamford Bridge today and Stamford Bridge in the 80s are in two different locations.

Sissoko has joined both Tottenham and Everton at the same time.

There are certain Ghanian footballers (ie. Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan) who had seemingly already attained legendary status by the 2010 World Cup, despite seemingly being perma-crocked (Appiah,) or playing for middling French teams (Gyan.) Furthermore, Appiah in particular seemed like he was already a grizzled veteran in his late 30's by that time, yet he is only 35 now.

I also still expect to see Rigobert Song turn out for the Cameroon squad, despite the hard-to-shake impression that he played alongside Roger Milla.

The Italy national team field an entire different starting 11 every game.

And similar to Italy, Brazil have an entire new squad in every tournament they play in.

Played together at the 94 WC

Until 2010 every single player in the italian national team had long hair. Then it suddenly changed.

Athletic Club and Athletic Bilbao are different teams. Laporte plays for one and Herrera played for the other.

Every year Osasuña has a different colour. Oh, and they're always in the first divison despite also being relegated every season.

Chelsea top the league at the end of August every single season.
