We need a new striker

RvP has looked old, lazy, slow and like he doesn't give a feck most of the season, him and Falcao just hold us back, we are well off the pace when it comes to the striking side of things.

We definitely need some energy up there. There are plenty of young talents that would give everything and put in a hell of a lot more work rate. We have one sitting on the bench every week for god sakes.

Benteke is getting popular here since he's in excellent form.

I was sort of against it, but we do seem to hit a lot of crosses, and he's probably the best aerial option out there, right? The goal he scored against Southampton was just a lofted 50/50 at the back stick of the kind we seem to throw up a lot.

42 in 81 starts, 7 sub appearances from age 22-24 at Villa. How many penalties in there?

6.

Why the sudden love for Benteke? He was in much better form two seasons ago.

How often has Benzema played for Real this season?

So we get a top striker one who capable of banging in 20-25, what on earth do we do with Rooney? He can't be a sub, & it would be silly putting him in midfield long term because he isn't that good there.

Its a bit of a conundrum. If we sell RVP and Chicha then we are left with only Rooney and Wilson which is not enough with the CL to think about. We could get an Ings type who could be ok sitting on the bench but then if Rooney got a long term injury could we trust Ings or Wilson to lead the line?

I think the best thing to do is try and get a World Class striker and let him and Rooney battle it out for the one striker spot. Competition is what can bring out the best in players.

For all we know though we could end up keeping RVP and Chicha. We will just have to wait and see.

Why is he being mentioned as a transfer target more often than not if that's the case?

I dont know, maybe because Real are liable to jettison anyone at the drop of a hat if they get a new toy.
He's been excellent for them the last 2 years, and been the perfect frontman for Ronaldo to feed off of, I would be staggered if they were entertaining the idea of him leaving right now.

also to answer your question on Benteke, it's because his form, performances and goal numbers have skyrocketed back to what he was doing in his 1st year in only the past couple of months of Sherwood coming in.
It's easy to see why posters on here are looking at him as viable option, he ticks all the boxes for a lone frontman.

I think he merits some consideration because Van Gaal will be here for another season at least and we cross the ball so much and we don't want Fellaini starting all the time.

Our buildup is fairly slow and we push our fullbacks forward while also looking for lots of width in the attack, all of which ends up leading to lots of crosses.

And he's 24 and wouldn't cry if he was Rooney's backup.

Well technically he'd be in the nominal #10 role that Fellaini occupies.

I say soldier on with Rooney and RVP for another season and if he continues to impress go all out for Kane next summer

I think we do need a new striker yeah. Falcao and RVP are done here imo.

Bit of a glut in world football at the moment striker wise though. I'm not having Kane at all either. Would rather play Wilson or get Chicharito back.

I'd bet my last 5 euros that they have at least one striker lined up. I dare say they won't go for the "big name" type after the Falcao failure but there will be someone with some type of Dutch connection that will come in. And hopefully Wilson will get more time next year.

So we'd have less cover than we did this season? Falcao is off, and Wilson needs a loan.

Plus RvP is costing a fortune for fairly limited output, £200 k + per week should get you a tip top striker, I think if we can get some one to take him off the wage list then we'd jump at the chance.

I do agree that we need a striker, but what do we do with Rooney? I would prefer us to play 4-3-3

Are you factoring in his 10mill Loyalty Bonus , over the course of his 200k a week contract?

Buy a young striker with serious potential, let Rooney be the main man next season up top - let Falcao go obviously.

Would keep RVP just incase anything happened to Rooney and the new striker we signed wasn't up to it, let Wilson be 4th striker or even send him on loan.

My choice would be Dybala, sadly looks like he is on his way to Juve but I would have him second choice next season.

Thought he got that on top of £200 k p/w wages.

Wonderful,
I'm sure I can recall reading in the papers he's due another large chunk of it entering next year on top of his 10mill a year wages he makes, which if he gives another seasons worth of performances similar to this ones will be sooooo totally worth it.

For what he did in Fergie's last season he was worth it, times up now though.

Personally think he might go to Juventus if they lose Tevez.

I don't want Vietto, Dybala etc simply because we have Wilson who i think is a huge talent, instead i want someone closer to their prime that can bridge the gap between Rooney and Wilson.

Lacazette and Benteke fits the bill, Lewandowski and Benzema seems unrealistic but would obviously be perfect.

I will not cry if we spent 25m on Benteke. For me I could see this as being our new Yorke type signing. I think Benteke would thrive with us and would give us the type of striker we havent had since Saha.

Can't believe we do, but we do. Can't see Real taking up the Hernandez offer. I suppose we'll offload him though. Falcao as well of course. Leaves Rooney, RVP and Wilson. I think Benteke will be a great option.

I agree we could do with a new striker (would be my priority after RB), although not a big fan of Benteke - would rather we go all-out for someone like Kane or even Sterling.

Falcao/RVP both need to go. They're both absolutely shot.

Bring in a young striker as backup/competition for Rooney. Someone who will be happy to fight for his place, and not kick up a fuss when he doesn't play.

That thought did cross my mind, Fellaini at United can only last so long, but could Rooney play that role to a world class standard?

Personally I don't think so, he doesn't have the guile or short passing game in that role IMO, but we may have to compromise as he'll be here no matter what and starting most of the time, so it's either him up top with Fellaini or Herrera behind, or a top striker with Rooney in behind IMO.

I think people are being too harsh on RvP and Falcao here. Rooney has looked gash as a striker too. All the evidence points to the build up play being the issue, not the striker. We need to inject way more speed into our build up play to create good opportunities for our striker. I don't think our sluggishness in attack can be pinpointed on any players in particular but rather LvG's style of play. With a new Summer to focus on this I am hoping for a lot higher speed of thought and speed of play from the midfield.

With that said, I wouldn't be against brining in a new striker if it's the right man. Here's what I think United will do...

Keep RvP but he will take a more limited role. I think RvP will be willing to do this. Dutch newspapers claim RvP's family is settled in Manchester now and that he would prefer to stay, even if he has to take a smaller role. I'd be satisfied with RvP as a back up striker. I think he still has plenty to offer and at least part of his disappointing season is down to the overall slow level of play.

I think Falcao will not be retained. I feel a bit bad for him even though he's not done well here. A big knee injury is tough to get over. Physically, but mentally too. I think Falcao needed regular playing time to bring back his confidence and comfort level but United was not able to provide that in so critical a season. I think he could still come good if a team was willing and able to accept a long readjustment period.

I think one new striker will be added. Probably someone relatively young because RvP and Rooney are both getting older, and someone who has already shown some true quality. Some of the names mentioned in this thread are quite likely I'd think, players who have already accomplished things in their football career but who have better years ahead of them.

While a new striker is important, more importantly we need a replacement/backup for Carrick. I do not think Blind is good enough to replace Carrick and I think that role is integral to LvG's system. Our deepest midfielder needs to be an accomplished passer, an energetic defender and needs a good sense of positional awareness. This will be very difficult to find but I think that more then anything else will improve United for next season.

I think Rooney and RVP are still good enough, maybe not as good as they were before, but easily good enough, our problem all season has been the final ball. We need to create chances for these strikers and I don't think we are doing that enough.

I think we all agree we need FOUR positions (keeper being a separate issue) addressed this summer. They are:

Right back
Center back
Center mid
Striker

That's a heavy lift, but whatever we do on the other fronts we cannot avoid dealing with our woeful options at striker right now. We can't go into next season expecting to beat Chelsea for the trophy and rely completely on Rooney for goals.

Do nothing at striker this summer and the best we can hope for in May is third place.

pace is what we need upfront.

just look at barca (messi, suarez, neymar), real (ronaldo, benzema, james, bale), bayern (robben, ribery etc)

signing depay is a good start, rooney is still pretty quick at counter attacking but we still need another pacey wing forward for next season. wilson is quick but is still unproven at this level.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but I think people are overrating Wilson here. He's hardly shown any sign of being a top tier striker. IMO he doesn't look like the sort who can make things happen but one who would play better because of having good team mates

Why weren't we in for Dybala? Juve getting another top deal while the bigger clubs wait around a couple of years to chase them.
