All our top title winning teams have had one or two strikers in top form throughout the season. One who can hold up play, one who be a nuisance throughout the game, one with pace. We dont have a striker who can do any of that right now. On paper, we have the best striker combination maybe even in the world but on the pitch they combined for around 30 goals this season. Three world class strikers scoring only around 30 goals between them isnt a great return.

I love RVP and Falcao. But its fairly evident that their time at this club is over and should ship them both out. We should either give Wilson a proper chance next season or at least send him on loan and sign a striker. We cant have Depay play up top on his own. He isnt capable of playing as a proper #9. Maybe a false #9. If Rooney is injured then we really dont have a good threat up top.

Van Persie offside always.

Falcao always slipping. Need to sign a young striker.

For now, Rooney would be a step up from Falcao/RVP. I agree with the people in the Rooney thread that he's only about a 7/10 these days, but I think we need to concentrate on other areas of the pitch before we need to buy a striker (CM, RB, CB...).

We need Falcao (he's going anyway), Van Persie and Hernandez off the books and start from scratch with Rooney and 1 or 2 new additions. We should be all over Dybala.

Dybala is as good as gone to Juve.

RVP - 10 goals
Rooney - 14 goals
Falcao - 4 goals

Pretty shocking return for the expected talent level and money spent.

I'm not convinced Rooney can do the role Van Gaal wants from his striker effectively enough. Shown nothing this season to suggest so, even during that extended run as striker.

The big issue for me is that while RVP and Falcao can be done away with we have Rooney who is the captain and has to play which makes it hard to look for a top striker unless we want to play two up front

But then when he has his annual slump we are left toothless, we need a couple if young hungry forwards that can help out too, not two busted flushes

We have so many areas that we need to improve.

We need new talent in every area except in goal.

Oh wait...

If we keep Di Maria, then Im happy with our winger situation. Depay, Di maria, Young and Mata looks good for now. We need a striker, two central midfielders and a centre back for sure. If Rafael is going then a RB as well.

Offload RvP and Falcao and start again from scratch. Rooney, Wilson, + a new signing.

Who would've thought after the summer spending that United with Rooney, RVP and newly added Falcao would be the worst off of the top 4 clubs when it comes to strikers?

We basically played with 10 men today when Falcao or RVP was on the pitch.

We really should be getting shot of rvp and falcao and going big for either benteke, Vietto or lacazette. All will be better than those now.

This is going to be an unpopular post....

We need Falcao. With Memphis and Di Maria in the team next season, we will (possibly) have 2 very direct players who can run and shoot from any position. What we need is a striker that has the following:

An eye for runs off the shoulder and great movement
Experience to know what actions to take and when to do so
That gambles for rebounds
That can shoot, head and hold the ball up
That has better than average pace and a first-yard edge

Yes, Falcao has struggled this season but it is also undeniable that he has suffered in the slower system too both early on in the season and in the end. His best moments came when he was reactive to direct play - goals vs Everton, Leicester, Villa and Stoke. the 2 players that will drive that directness are Memphis and Di Maria.

Falcao offers the best blend and intelligence to thrive in those situations over Rooney, van Persie and Hernandez on this season's showing - even with limited goals. Wilson is the unknown product at this stage.

If Louis goes with only 1 of Memphis and Di Maria at any one stage then this argument admittedly suffers greatly.

EDIT - of course a fantasy signing like Benzema would work better but I'm focusing on what we realistically have

United would have been better of had we kept Welbeck and Hernandez. Attacking was never a problem with United and it is ironic that when it appeared that we had the most formidable attack in the league, in reality we probably had one of the worst and the most desperate. With the latter statement referring to the time we used fellaini and di maria as an attacking outlet.

I want someone who can hold up the ball and bring our midfield and wingers into play, be a real handful up there when playing as the lone striker, cause defenders trouble even with his back to goal.

How many might Rooney have got if he hadn't been shunted into midfield for so many many games.
The spell behind Falcao/VP, and that woeful deep mid role.

Would deffo have got 20+

Yeah the wee pea would have scored more than 4 goals this season, if he'd been content coming off the bench again.

yep....RVP has to be pensioned off, never been the same since Fergie left. Falcao, great punt, but hasn't worked out. Rooney, well...I'm a big fan, but these last few games has been shite, no matter what position he's played in and he certainly isn't a lead striker if we are going to challenge the top teams. Wilson? Well....hardly eh? Good prospect, but not one to hang you washing on next season. I'm sure LVG knows this...exciting summer transfer window ahead methinks.

I think he would have too to be fair but the facts are our top 3 strikers have scored a combined 28 goals in all competitions.

I think we have done well to get Top 4 with it, perhaps a bit fortunate that Liverpool have suffered perhaps an even worse year from their strikers.

If I'm being honest I'm not convinced by ANY of our strikers.

Falcao is obviously leaving but the decline of RVP has been so rapid I'm shocked. Wilson will need more of a chance but hasn't hardly set the world alight when he has played, Even Macheda contributed more by this stage in his Utd career.

Rooney is the debatable one. He is the best striker we have but time and time again he has got away with mediocre to poor performances and he really isn't the World Class striker we need, obviously we should keep him in the squad but as a guaranteed starter I'm not so sure anymore.

I will never understand how Wilson didn't deserve even a couple of the many opportunities Falcao received towards the end of this season.

The only striker we have who gives me some kind of confidence at this point is Rooney and even he has peaked and I think will start to experience a sharp decline in the next couple of seasons.

Falcao is an obvious throwout, he's done nothing for us. RVP might have a better season if we inject pace into the team, as that would create more space and chances, but he is injured too often to rely on him. He would be better off moving onto a continental team where the speed and physical level isn't as high as PL.

I am pissed off at Wilson's situation because Falcao has eaten minute after minute of gametime he might otherwise be getting. If he plays next week against Hull, it will be nearly a full season since he scored the brace against them at OT. How far has he developed, what chances has he really gotten since then? It puts his development into perspective.

No doubt about it. Would have preferred Wilson to come on for Falcao. His pace would have scared the hell out of them.

Either Muller or Kane would be brilliant in LVG's system. Both quite positionally disciplined strikers. Not that we'll get either, mind.

Especially in the case of Kane, Levy will probably ask for £198 squijillion in exchange.

Don't think Ings is good enough to cut it for us, but could be a decent back up option for free.

I still think Rooney as a starter with RvP on the bench is decent enough but there's no doubt we would benefit from getting a world-class striker in, which, sadly, neither Rooney nor RvP are anymore.

I haven't seen anything from Wilson to suggest he should be promoted from his current role.
