We have definitely lost our soul in a way

I thought I'd dig out the line up from a random game I attended in the past and one that stuck in the mind was United 4 Stoke 0 from the 79/80 season. Not one local lad in our line up but the difference that was that clubs shopped closer to home. Remarkably there were 5 scots in that team plus 3 English, 2 Irish and 1 Welshman. More than half the team were bought in, at a young age some of them perhaps, but bought nonetheless. Bailey trekked from South Africa to get a trial. Not one Manc.

When the club started, like all clubs, I'd guess it was filled with locals. Things moved on to the time above and now things have moved on further, and clubs shop globally as its now a global game. I see no difference between buying a top striker from Spain these days than buying Joe Jordan off Leeds back in the day. As for the "soul" of United I think thats for individual interpretation but its not something, for me, that gets bought or sold or is diminished over time. What does irk me is players who disrespect the club, the likes of Valdes, ADM and now yes you DDG. If there is something that chips away at our integrity it is putting up with cnutish behaviour from the likes of them and I wish we would really focus on players who are admirers/fans/respectful of the club. It doesn't matter where they come from - look at Herrera or Basti for example of foreign players who have clearly bought into the club. That's one way of keeping our identity as a club. I think LVG is good on this - he wants players who genuinely want to play for United and not just after a payday and there was a whiff of that about Pedro for example

I also don't necessarily buy into this idea that there is a fixed United way of playing - I watched some terrible dross over the years prior to SAF. Staying stuck in some timewarp where different styles of football are branded unworthy of us isn't going to get us anywhere and to remain successful we've got to be flexible and adaptable. In fact I would go as far as to say attempting to play a certain brand of football has possibly cost us a couple of European Cups.

Oh not this shit again. Get with the times people, you want to be successful in this era you have to buy top players, simple. People act like SAF didnt break transfer records to bring in the players he needed. Also other than the class of 92 the club have not produced any British talent worthy of note. The club is about nurturing young players in the academy or buying them. We have been far more successful recently with the latter (Ronaldo, de Gea, Pogba) and theres no shame in that.

We are going through a major revamp because guess what? We fecking need it desperately.

Big difference between going through successive marquee signings (Robinho, Tevez, Balotelli, etc.) like City and relying on them, and signing promising prospects like a young Ronaldo, Rooney or a Neymar.

Real Madrid and City make their living off of buying prime players at their peak to lead the team. Until recently, we have only done so to a limited extent, signing players like RVP, but mostly it's been either academy players, or players like Ronaldo or Rooney that we bought young and made our own.

Completely agree.. but then it's funny how the people who support people like "Dave" are also in many cases the club's biggest critics..

How has United lost its way?
We have only loaned our youth for a year this window - some of those to good clubs, where they will probably get more playing time than here, so it makes total sense.
The purchase of a highly rated 19 yo makes sense and gives us something to look forward to but people are complaining. OK, the fee is disgusting, but if he really rated that highly, then maybe that is what it takes. The club clearly don't see enough in our current youth setup in this guys position - no problem there, the club has to move forward if it wants to be competitive.
Its been an odd window, I grant you, but are we not stronger than when the window started? For what - a net spend of about £30M?

To not give Real what they want for once and show financial power in the market

But we came out worse. We got no money for DDG and no keeper as part of the deal; he's going to sign for free next season; we can't be sure of how he's going to be as a player now that all this happened; and we're again associated with a laughable Spanish transfer.

I'm struggling to see where we grew a pair of balls. We're just cutting our nose off to spite our face. This should have been wrapped up weeks ago and him gone from OT. He clearly doesn't want to be here.

Like I said, loan deals don't mean much atm... how many players have gone on loan, come back and cemented a place? How many have been moved on?

Jonny Evans-ish, John O'Shea-ish, Beckham, Tom Cleverley(?), Richardson(?) have all at least returned to play in the first team fairly regularly. That's about it.

But then there's players like Rossi, Pique, Macheda, John Curtis, Ben Amos who were fairly highly regarded here but loans didn't help them at all.

Yea that's what I was getting at, loan doesn't mean much. Especially during the last decade. Also you forgot Wellbeck...

I hope it helps Januza but I'm not holding my breath...

The loan system needs a major review, especially the way clubs like Chelsea use it. I'm all for sending players out on loan if the intention is there for them to come back a play in the first team but to continually loan them out is just a joke.

I just think in the case of Januzaj it doesn't really make a lot of sense and is more to do with the manager not knowing how to really use him.
