The steamed hams scene is quite possibly my favourite in all of the Simpsons. Just had to explain to my colleagues why I can't stop laughing

I've only just seen this theatrical short they did in 2012. It's pretty good for what it is. A nice call back to the Ayn Rand School for Tots.

I think my single favourite moment.....and it's a hard call but .... Krusty and his Sex Cauldron line.

Springfield's beloved Plow King is trapped.

In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone he strikes the same rib twice in succession yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a... [chuckles] magic xylophone or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

Season 3 Episode 8 Lisa's pony

Homer: Apu! You can take this job and restaff it!
Apu: He slept, he stole, he was rude to the customers, still there goes the best damned employee a convenience store ever had.

Scorpio: Ever seen a man say goodbye to a pair of shoes?

Homer: Yes, once.

“Drederick, what do you think of Homer Simpson?” – Reporter
“I think he’s a good man, I like him, I got nothing against him, but I’m definitely going to make orphans of his children.” – Drederick Tatum
“Uh, you know they do have a mother, champ.” – Reporter
“Yes, but I would imagine that she would die of grief.” – Drederick Tatum

Re-reading some of this thread brings back some excellent memories.

When I was but a lad of about 10 years old I used to religously tape the simpsons every week on the old VCR. I must have racked up a good 50 hours of pure, unadulterated Simpsons from all the prime seasons. Might even have the old tapes somewhere (not that anyone has a VCR anymore).

Some of the lines in this thread have been outstanding, sadly my memory of those early seasons is a little hazy now and I cant remember any of the episodes that havent been already mentioned.

Steamed Hams though

Also love Hank Scorpio, Trash of the Titans, the Casino episode... and countless others.

Homer Simpson: Good news, everyone! I got in a fight with the garbage men and they're cutting off our service!

Marge Simpson: Oh, lord, now what are we going to do? Just let the trash pile up?

Homer Simpson: Hey, I'd rather live in a dump than in a world run by snooty garbage men.

Lisa Simpson: Dad, is this another one of those situations that could be solved by a simple apology?

Homer Simpson: I never apologize, Lisa. I'm sorry, but that's just the way I am.

RayPatterson2.jpg

Ray Patterson: Here's your apology back, Mr Simpson, and I'm sorry we couldn't work this out.
Homer Simpson: Don't come off all high and mighty with me, Patterson. You can't scare me with your office and your desk and your lamp.
Ray Patterson: I'm not trying to scare you, I'm trying to get my work done.
Homer Simpson: Oh, oh, oh, I get it. Put on a big show for the cameras.
Ray Patterson: What cameras? Why are you still here?
Homer Simpson: I came to fight city hall. I want to shake things up, Patterson. Stir up some controversy, rattle a few cages.
[Homer rattles a bird cage]
Ray Patterson: Hey! Stop that!
Homer Simpson: You'll never silence me. I'm the last angry man, Patterson. A crusader for the little guy!
[Homer rattles the bird cage again]
Ray Patterson: Leave the bird alone!
Homer Simpson: Never!
Ray Patterson: Look, Simpson, I've been elected by the voters of this city 16 years in a row. So they must think I'm doing a damn good job.
Homer Simpson: You wanna know what I think?
Ray Patterson: No! Nobody wants to hear the nonsensical ravings of a loudmouthed malcontent!
Homer Simpson: Oh! Well, we'll see about that!

One more..

KEteO.png

Ray Patterson: Oh gosh. You know, I'm not much on speeches, but it's so gratifying to... leave you wallowing in the mess you've made. You're screwed, thank you, bye.
Moe: He's right. He ain't much on speeches.

I just love that episode.

edit: Havent seen much here from the episode where Burns runs for governer? (This is in the pre-Quimby era too)

Ironic, isn't it, Smithers? This anonymous clan of slack-jawed troglodytes has cost me the election. And yet, if I were to have them killed, I would be the one to go to jail. That's democracy for you. -Mr. Burns

Critics say Scully ruined the show but looking back in his seasons, they were still immensely amusing compared to what followed, the only criticism I have against his years was the fact he took the show too zainy too quickly early on, compared to the brilliant storytelling of the opening years, but if you just sit back and go for genuine laugh count per epidsode, then you have to conclude he did well despite a slightly different approach.

A memorable Scully episode for me in particular was with Homer changing his name to Max Power, PoliceCops and "Ohhh oh Spaghetti-O's".. "Thats the end of that chapter..." "(to Marge)You don't snuggle with Max Power, you strap yourself in and feel the G's!"

Ah I love the Max Power episode.

Homer Simpson: Kids: there's three ways to do things; the right way, the wrong way and the Max Power way!

Bart: Isn't that the wrong way?

Homer Simpson: Yeah, but faster!

Also unrelated but;

And a random one as well

By the time I got to a phone, my discovery had already been reported by Principal Kohoutek. I got back at him, though...him and that little boy of his. -Principal Skinner

simpsons-leonard-nimoy.jpg

Leonard Nimoy: Hello. I'm Leonard Nimoy. The following tale of alien encounters is true. And by true, I mean false. It's all lies. But they're entertaining lies. And in the end, isn't that the real truth? The answer is: No.

tumblr_mr9vaxrQwc1snjzm6o1_1280.jpg

Chief Wiggum: Fat Tony is a cancer on this fair city. And I am the... uh... what cures cancer?

250px-AshleyGrant.jpg

Marge [when the doorbell rings]: Oh, that's the babysitter. No one in town will sit for you two any more. I had to choose between a grad student at the university and a scary-looking hobo.

Bart: [goes to answer door] Please the hobo, please the hobo, please the hobo.. [opens it]

Ashley: Hi, I'm Ashley Grant.

Bart: [groans] Oh...

Lisa: [gasps] Ashley Grant! You gave a talk on women's issues at my school on how we don't have to be second-class citizens.

Bart: Mom! How can you leave us with this maniac?

Oh god, how could I forget.... (sorry about the video quality being shite etc)

Not to mention, Hans Moleman

Adult_burns.jpg

Homer Simpson: Mr. Burns, I've compiled list of safety recommendations for the plant.

Mr. Burns: Well, let me throw back my legs and pollute my britches with delight.

Homer Simpson: But the book said you'd applaud my initiative...

Mr. Burns: What book is that? "The Ape Who Wanted a Big Bonus"? Stop wasting my time and get out of my sight, you corn-fed man-cow!

Corn-fed man-cow....cracks me up every time.

Homer to the Max is probably in my top 5 all time favourites.

I also love this one:

tumblr_lnnj7b8YeY1qi5wn7o1_500.png

Tape recording: "I work hard for the money. So hard for the money.
Oh something something money. Come on give me lots of honey"

Mr Burns: "Well, there's an employee, Smithers. A smile on his lips and a song in his heart. Promote him."

*Cut to haphazard figure sitting in an executive office, the tape recording warps and bursts into flames*

Yeah, hi, Roy.

Gene Siskel: Are you nuts? That movie stinks like your creepy one bedroom apartment.

Roger Ebert: Your mother didn’t think it was so creepy.

Gene Siskel: My mother, real mature. I’m sick of your grade school insults.

Homer: Hehe, I love watching the bald guy argue with the fat tub of lard.

Homer: I stumbled upon this delightful British sitcom, its about a family of hard working yet loving soccer hooligans, if they're not having a go with a bird, they're having a row with a wanker.

The Frank 'Grimey' Grimes episode is probably the best episode of Simpsons ever.

I love the Monorail episode just for how crazy it is. Also has so many great line "donuts is there anything they can't do"

But for a episode as a whole "And Maggie Makes Three" is The Simpsons at its best

Homer on the phone: Hello, Selma? Selma my dear, how are you? ...
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh. Listen, shut up for a second. How
would you like to marry Apu so he doesn't get deported?

Season 12 still has more hits than misses for me, but it's clear one or more of the wheels has fallen off by that point. Still some great episodes though. Hungry Hungry Homer is one of my fall time favourites.

I'm sure there are some but the drop is quite noticeable for me. Only because the previous 6 seasons were completely faultless, obviously, but it's perfect for about 7 whole years, and then just drops off completely in about 3. I've been watching a whole load recently, and I'd actually say it stops being perfect at the end of 8, not 9. 9 still has some classics (the NY one, the Angel one, the carny one, the one where Marge is an estate agent. Mojo etc - In fact the Mojo one is one of my favorite ever) but it's overall level is noticeably down, and some of it's best episodes are actually ones held over from 7 and 8.

It's nowhere near a bad season, but I think it can still be pinpointed as the first one with a single poor-poorish episode in it.

Though I don't actually think the fabled "Principle and the Pauper" is one of them. Not if you watch it without it's baggage at any rate. I also don't think Last Exit is the best. Cape Feare or And Maggie Makes Three are probably the best. Neither are actually my favorites but that's what I'd choose if I was trying to be objective. One for gags and one for story/heart/whatever you wanna call it.

I posted this in the P&R thread but listen to the commentary's on the dvd's the sheer amount of hours everybody work on the show was insane and really not that healthy. So I can see how the quality drop off when the writers started doing less hours and add to that most great tv shows have about a 3 year spell of being at it's best then the normal tail off. The Simpsons has at least 4 years of pure gold(Also seasons in the Uk are very short compared to the US so it's at least 80!! episodes of utter gold)

Someone mention before that the 'Behind the laughter' episode would be a good last episode for The Simpsons to end on.

It's been a while since I seen that one so I can't really remember any of it.

9's the best season for me. Really love the episode where Homer gets a gun which you missed off.

Yeah that's good. It's certainly funny, but it's politics ruin it slightly for me. I agree with Groening that it doesn't go far enough with it's criticism in an appeal to the American middle ground. Though to be fair I have similar issues with undoubted classic Homer The Heretic, because of Marge's line "don't make me chose between my man and my God because you just can't win"...So it could just be a personal thing. I'm aware it's taking a cartoon too seriously.

Lisa The Simpson is a really good one from 9 too, with Frostilicus and "get mama's prying bar" (but like the City of NY one, it's actually a held over season 8 episode*) Phil Hartman's still alive too. It's still a great season, I just think there are weak episodes in it.

* Interestingly, so is Principle and the Pauper.

The Principal and the Pauper is seen as the beginning of the end because of the way it just dumped the Skinner backstory they'd been building for ages. Illogical character development and plotlines have become the norm so I'm not surprised that's seen as its genesis. Harry Shearer was apparently furious when he read the script.

Resorting to musical episodes like All Singing, All Dancing with recycled material is never a good sign either. My reaction to that episode is always the same as Homer's reaction to Paint Your Wagon.

Fantastic episode, but that line annoys me still. It's disturbing that someone would say that to a loved one.

I also find that line weird as Marge has never shown herself to be that devoutly religious, there she sounds more like a female Ned.

The show needs to have another Mel Gibson based episode.
