WC Snooker 2013

The top players have a responsibility to the sport that pays them their wages. No-one here is arguing that Ronnie isn't the best around by a mile or possibly the best ever, but with that should come respect for the sport and him not going to these tours will reduce the sponsorship income and shit on the other players.

They don't get wages. They get winnings for where they place in the tournaments they enter and they get personal sponsorship money. They owe nothing to "The Sport". Snookers governing body has been known to be terrible at looking after and supporting its players. You only have to look at the contempt Hearn shows the players and the complete lack of respect he gives them to realise that.

Yeah I get it, you are Scottish and like Hendry. None of what you just said adds balance either btw.

But I don't care about any of that, I just like watching a bit of snooker. And growing up watching Hendry demolish people and now O'Sullivan and his game, I don't have a preference other than just watching and seeing the frames. Hendry moved the game on from Davis, but Ronnie has moved it on from Hendry. There's no way Hendry or Davis or anyone else at that age could do what Ronnie has done tonight, and as far as pure talent goes there's no one ever in the history of the game that can control the cueball left and right handed like Ronnie does.

Yeah individual stats are one thing, not that I'm sure what stats you are on about. But without his mental issues it's hard to see how Ronnie wouldn't have cantered to more world titles anyway.

Mental ability is part of the game, Pexbo has already indicated how that is the two sides to Ronnie's genius (like many of his rarefied ilk in other sports). Introducing hypothetical ifs and buts into the argument doesn't shed any light. For example, what if Ronnie had a stable personality and was more consistent during the last decade? What if Hendry hadn't lost motivation after winning title number 7?

As I said O'Sullivan at his best and Hendry in his 1993-96 form are some distance ahead of everybody else. There's not a lot, if anything, between them. The statistical achievements I mentioned are for example the 7 centuries in the '94 UK Open Final 10-5 win over Ken Doherty, his record 775 century breaks, the 35 consecutive matches and 5 titles he won in 90/91, 16 centuries in the '02 Worlds, his record centuries in one season, etc.

Well I like Hendry and always have. But as both himself and Davis said during this tournament, there's always someone better going to come through.

As great as Hendry was, there's things even he couldn't and wouldn't attempt to do. It's not overlooking his great achievements calling O'Sullivan the best ever, it's just calling it as I personally see it.

But he isn't 'easily' the best. He is 'easily' the most natural though. If anything, this tournament should tell you that.

He is absolutely fantastic to watch. I can watch snooker for house non stop if he is playing. Put John Higgins v Shaun Murphy on and I'll be asleep before one of them gets to double figures.
