And to think Fergie wanted to sell him but stepped down, chose Moyes and that Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime gave him a 100 years contract.

There is no chance Jose will accept this kind of shit in the middle of the park.
English Pirlo ffs.

It's unbelievable how everybody can see he's past it bar his managers.

Not just managers. Ex players, pundits and the media in general think he is still amazing because he is Wayne Rooney.

this game has done that aspect a huge favour

I don't think he will. The press and parts of the board, the fans and dressing room will be all over him. The only thing giving me hope is that he also wasn't afraid to drop Casillas when he wasn't good enough anymore.

That's right, it's his fault that he's got no one to pass to.. The guy wins the ball and 30secs later Sterling/Sturridge/co. gives it away..

That should give me hope too, but Mourinho refused to drop Ivanovic the past season who was awful.

Hopefully he doesn't repeat that mistake.

None of the pundits have the Kahuna's to tell it as they see.
You are not World class when you have got such an inconsistent first touch.
They over praise him for doing the ordinary all the time.
Why don't they slate him when he's poor?

I swear we have been asking if he can play in midfield for about 5 years now (in fact, he idea has probably be thrown about for longer). When will the answer finally be 'no'.

I can still see pundits claiming his future is in midfield when he hits 35. His future is in fecking China.

All he has to do is hit those crossfield passes all day and the pundits and press eat it up. Never any comments about how anonymous and out of steam he becomes in the second half or actually doesn't create anything.

That was, hands down, one of the worst performances I've seen from a player at Rooney's (supposed) level. It's like his entire decline since before Fergie stepped down, and Rooney narrowly avoided the chop, was all leading up to this one catastrophic night, when it all came together in a perfect, utter shambles.

Mourinho's tenure at the club will probably hinge on how he handles the Rooney situation. It's a tough spot, because of his stature off the field, both commercially and probably the dressing room as well, and just axing him will probably create disharmony at every level.

As I said in the match thread. Yes it is.

He does absolutely feck all to make space for himself. He literally stands on the ball every time he gets it, of course he can't find an angle to pass.

I will repeat myself in midfield he isn't better than Cleverley, in fact Cleverley is better.

It's shocking how commentators or pundits don't pick up on this, but are quick to wank themselves silly over that overrated right flank floater that does feck all.

Rooney will always be 1st name on team sheet as long as he is around. Maybe Jose will change his position but will definitely play.

People forget that Jose needs to have players on his side since most of them didnt want him as manager and the biggest mistake he can do is to alienate the hugely popular Captain. Best scenario is he might get subbed like how Roy was handling it but sitting on the bench no ways

Hasn't cleverley been doing alright at Everton? I mean not exceptional but I read he's evolved from the absolute crab he was at United.

The amount of knee jerking on this thread is unbelievable. He comes on for about half an hour against a team with ten men in the box, and two strikers making no space for themselves to aim at and he's suddenly shite again. The fact that people are going are far as to to say fecking Smalling (who has been well below average) has had a better Euros than him is incredible.
Let's have it right, Rooney is not a "world class" centre mid and he never will be, but he is a good one and in the right set up he can be a very good one. He shouldn't be depended on to create all your chances because he's not that type of player, but alongside a more defensive and more attack minded midfielder Rooney will be able to do well for United. He can go from box to box looking for the ball and get it to the wingers consistently, which is now suddenly a bad thing despite Modric, Kroos, Verrati and the likes doing it on a regular basis.
Long story short is Rooney a midfield general? No. Is he shite? No. Is he good enough for United given the current state we're in? Yes he most definitely is.
JESUS CHRIST. fecking unbelievable is that someone cant still get it after his last three year's performances, last one in particular and his showing at euros as well, he is absolutely not good enough for us and it is very debatable if he could even get into starting lineups of teams like Sunderland and so on.. ppl look at him as a legend and he still gets games because everyone thinks he can do the job, no if his name was Djembe Djemba, no one would be surprised if he left the club the next transfer window to some club in second spanish division. It's clear that he peaked long time ago and he's not good enough to play in the EPL, let alone for the biggest club in the world...

Lee Dixon called out his 2nd half performance to be fair, said he felt sorry for him it was that bad

So he literally has to bring the ball to the feet of the strikers and at the same time make sure he's go enough time to get back to cover Alli and Wilshere? That's asking quite a lot.

at the time I posted that he'd been doing alright :nervous:
Although I will admit I was suffering from post season syndrome when all our players are much better than they really are in my head

Cleverley is a midfielder. A mediocre one but trained as a midfielder none the less. Of course he's better than striker pretending to be one.

That isn't what @Pexbo is talking about I suspect. You just look back to the Italy-Spain game earlier. When receiving the ball, proper midfielders know how to use their body and use very slight feints and misdirections to create just that bit more space or change of direction to open up more options for themselves. Rooney just receives the ball and immediately wants to hit his fecking hollywood ball. Failing that he tries the obvious short option.

Eh?

You only need to move 5 or 10 yards with the ball to make an angle. It doesn't need to be in the direction your target player is.

It's what most midfielders do rather than stopping the ball dead and standing over it looking for someone to pass to.

Exactly.

Was abysmal in the second half today. He's had a good tournament up to tonight but I think it shows that we can't rely on Wayne alone in that position.

I don't mind him being in the team, but it would be best if he wasn't the main man in the midfield.

Rooney is being played out of position. He is #9!!! England scoring record, why play him midfield?

A prediction of a new thread. Not my opinion.

You are kidding right? Anyone who gets the ball from him needs three touches to get it under control or to check their run because he's played the ball behind them or through the air in slow motion.

Against a team which constantly has 7-8 players defending that's extremely difficult. You are forced to make quick passes to get an opening and to get the opposition to move their position. Many teams came to OT last season with the same kind of system that ICE had tonight. Rooney being so far away simply forced him to make those passes. With Carrick to ease up the building, it would had been much effective but that's the management issue.

I'm sure he saw that it wasn't working but with Wilshere and Alli there, he couldn't move up or it would had opened Gylfi more space to counter..
