Wayne Rooney | New Plymouth Head Coach

Whisper it quietly but he might, just might, have found the right fit for him.

Tactical red.

He knew he'd get them fired up for the last 10 if he was sent off.

Genius move.

Right up there with ETH bringing on Maguire on Thursday. He just knew it would work.

Seems like he's doing well and the fans enjoy the style of play.

Actually saw something like that recently from another sport. I don't watch baseball at all and caught a video clip where it was saying it was common for managers to get sent off for arguing with officials. The players expect the manager to back them and for it to happen if they get a bad decsion. It would be seen as not sticking up for your team if you don't.

So this manager goes over to ref and tells him to send him off. He praises him for doing a difficult job but says he thought it was a bad decision while asking to be ejected. He's just playing out a whole pretence so that the players stay fired up.

It really seems the medias vendetta vs Rooney is continuing into his coaching career.

They were cnuts to him as a player even know he is and was on of their greatest or best players.

Now as a coach they couldn’t wait to give him a hard time in his first few jobs - considering his first job was probably the hardest and worst conditions to probably ever work in and he so nearly kept derby up. The media and social media still criticised him.

The dc United was one of the worst teams in the league he steadied the ship and probably used it to learn more. The media’s criticised him.

He took that Birmingham job in middle of the season when they were in a false position. Wasn’t gave a transfer window and didn’t have a preseason to try put his stamp or style on the team. Media and social media basically got him the sack.

He gets the Plymouth job, he has a preseason he has a well run club he is putting his stamp on things tryna build for the future. I know for a fact as an (ex youth player of mine is in the squad) that the players are loving his coaching mannerisms etc they are performing better than expected and what do you know the press have shut up and offered no praise.

Hopefully things keep going the way they are for him

You coach? I agree though, and glad they brought it up on Stick to football. I'm also pretty amazed by how funny he is and how down to earth, he doesn't take himself seriously at all and is so forthcoming. That part where he talked about the corner routine where he wanted chaos for the oppositions defenders, and he is like "why not, give it a go".

I really like him. Hope he climbs up the managerial ladder to the top tier.

Just at grassroots level nothing major

Dropped into the relegation places this weekend. Looks like he rested several players yesterday at Leeds ahead of the Portsmouth game on Tuesday but to not even have a single shot in the game doesn't look great. Away form as a whole is terrible, 6 defeats and a draw with only 1 goal scored.

Been on a bad run of late. Hopefully he can pull something out the bag in the next few games

Win % of 27 ish looks like his ceiling pretty much...

Defying the xG stats a bit aren't they? Can't say I've been watching them. The outlook doesn't inspire much confidence though.

28.2 xG conceded (worst in the league), actually let in 28 too (joint worst).
11.6 xG registered (worst in the league), actually scored 17 (kind of mid).

xG +/- of games won:
Blackburn +0.8
Portsmouth +0.1
Sunderland 0
Luton -0.1

xG +/- of drawn games
Hull -0.1
Derby -1.0
Preston -1.0
Watford -1.8
QPR -2.1

xG +/- of defeats
Millwall -0.6
Stoke -0.7
Burnley -0.8
West Brom -1.5
Leeds -1.8
Cardiff -1.9
Sheff Wed -4.2

3 of their 4 wins in even xG battles, 4 of their 5 draws achieved where they lost the xG battle by quite a lot, every game they lost a fair bit behind on that metric.

"Won the xG" 2 out of 16 times and one of those was by 0.1. Could easily be sitting on around 7-10 points.

Feel bad for him. Lost 6-1 tonight at Norwich.

Think he's got a huge job on his hands to keep them up, maybe even to keep his job.

Definitely don’t understand why he took this job. His last 3 jobs have been serious head scratchers.

why feel bad for him. He has only ever got work based on his name and playing career. He’s an awful manager. Surely, after this inevitable firing, chairman up and down the leagues are gonna stop offering him a job to boost the profile of their club

For no other reason I like him and would want him to do well.

Still hoping it works out but he chose a very difficult job

Is he actually an aweful manager though? What are his tactics like, in game management etc?

The underlying stats indicate they're one of the worst teams in the league. They also have the worst GD and conceded the most due to being thumped a few times this season. They had decent few games in September and start of October that made it seem like they could pick up form but it's going to be a slog to stay up.

It's the Championship though and teams are very capable of going on win streaks out of nowhere to climb the table.

From what I understand from reading the Plymouth forums their owner or upper management wanted to play a certain style of football and he is trying to implement that. People are calling for a more pragmatic approach, particularly away from home where they've been dominated often so can assume that the style is somewhat open. Someone saying they wished they played more like Millwall who are playing ugly but effective football.

There's a thread wishing for Mark Robins to replace Wayne but others saying they doubt they could afford him and that he'd want too much money. Some pining for their former manger Steven Schumacher. Plymouth are run on a small budget for that division. They only just stayed up last season too, so it's not like their position is completely unexpected.

Still, the signs are just not good. As @SilentWitness pointed out, their stats are awful. I posted some up the other day and they seem fortunate not to be bottom of the league. Their stats would normally be indicative of a team who are bottom. Of course, football isn't played on stats, actual goals scored and actual points matter so that's one good thing that's happening for them. You do wonder though, what would happen if they stopped getting that good fortune. They'd likely go down unless they actually start playing better.

They have:

Conceded the most goals in the division and have the worst goal difference ( @SilentWitness again)
The most xG conceded in the league
The most shots and shots on target against them of any team
Let their opponents have 551 touches in their box, by far the worst, next worst is Oxford with 430, that's just shocking to be so far behind
Made the 2nd most tackles of any team - not always the case but often points to a team under a lot of pressure
Made the most clearances of any team, see above

Attacking wise they're a little better as they've scored more than the absolute worst but there's still a lot of worrying indicators:

Scored 18 in 17 matches, ranked joint 16th of 24 in that regard but have perhaps been fortunate to score so many.
They've created the least xG in the division.
They have the lowest xG per shot at 0.07 xG so their chance quality is poor, they just seem to fly in a bit more often that you'd expect so far for whatever reason.
Are ranked 22 out of 24 for touches in their opponents box
Are ranked joint 23rd out of 24 for touches in their opponent's attacking third of the pitch

Opta produce an expected points table, they're bottom (click the expected tab). They "should" be on 11.60 points if their results matched their metrics which is last place.

The good news is that they're not last and that the 6 points they have on QPR and 5 on Portsmouth is actually quite significant, albeit Portsmouth have 2 games in hand and have a home match tonight.
