Wayne Rooney | Leaves Plymouth by Mutual Consent

Derby fan here, we were incredibly grateful when he finished his playing career as he was absolutely woeful for us despite picking up a gigantic pay cheque ever week (£100k/week as a Championship player...), his signing (orchestrated by our chairman) undermined our then manager Cocu who had a player he didn't want, couldn't drop and was being touted for his own job by the media every week (it was a total circus, all against the backdrop of our name change to "Rooney's Rams". You do realise we were going okay until Rooney came in? He captained us to bottom of the league as a player, took over as manager and has averaged 1 point per game since he took over. We survived because Wednesday were docked 6 points and Rotherham who have a fraction of our resources drew after a 89th min equaliser at Cardiff. Our last 7 games were lost 6 in a row, draw at home to bottom of the league and Rooney "saved us" apparently.

Say what you like about entitled, we're obviously not Man United or top 6 but nonetheless we're a proud historic club with strong traditions, one of the 12 founder members of the football league, played most of our history in the top flight and one of only a handful of clubs to win all domestic trophies...and yes we feel we deserve better than the nightmare that has been the Wayne Rooney show since he dropped into town. We didn't ask for any of the media attention Rooney has garnered us, same went for Lampard too but at least he performed better.

Thank you for the insight. Disappointing to read how it all developed.

So you think Wayne Rooney, who nearly led a club as big as Derby to relegation from the Championship last season would be a better candidate to manage England than the man who has taken us to a semi final and a final in our last two major tournaments?

Didn't England's former top-ever scorer Bobby Charlton flounder in management shortly after he retired with Preston? It's not always easy for a big name player to suddenly become a manager and expect the same level of success.

Quite the plummet considering they were perennial promotion contenders for years.

They gambled heavily on getting promoted and spent heavily on players and wages. They just missed out on a couple of occasions but the result is now the club have run into problems with FFP and Mel Morris (the owner) has been ill and is desperate to sell the club.

Last season was a disaster and they say the table never lies, but they had one real purple patch shortly after Rooney formally took over and that saved them. Other than that, they lost twice to Rotherham and 0-3 to Wycombe, both of whom were relegated.

They have a number of players out of contract and have already lost Jordan Ibe, Jack Marriott (cost them £6m) and Martyn Waghorn (scored the goal that kept them up) on free transfers.

For me, if there was ever a team in the FL to be a banker to get relegated, it's them.

Edit: Just done a quick bit of Googling. Derby picked up 44pts last season. 32 of those points where achieved in 19 games between December and the end of January. 12pts in the other 27 games shows how bad they were either side of that!

I looked last week and couldn't even find a bookie taking bets on Derby.

This thread title disturbs me. He hasn’t retired from football if he is a full time manager.

I don’t know why it bothers me.

Great player in his day but clearly isn't very bright, was never the most professional in terms of keeping in shape etc and it should be no surprise he is turning out to be a poor manager.

Odd appointment by Derby and they should cut their losses.

is he turning out to be a poor manager?

Derby were 6th favourites to be relegated at the start of last season, so whilst Rooney hasn't exactly been performing miracles he hasn't really been a 'poor' manager so far.

This coming season he is already having his hands tied behind his back, no signings, only 9 players registered, board room in a mess.

Why the hell is the manager going into 50/50s in training? :wenger:

They don't hvae enough players to facilitate senior training, hence the reason Rooney is making up the numbers.

Do you honestly think anything about his personality suggests he would be a good manager?

I have a lot of family from Derby, and trust me when I say, Rooney is a joke of a manager.

You could make the same question about many managers who have managed at the top level,

I think he commands respect, he understands football and doesn't run from a tough job, although I do think his professionalism out of football confines has always needed work.

I know some Derby fans don't like Rooney as their manager, most that I know have given the reasoning of 'he brings a circus of attention' or words to that effect.

I think the poor ownership at Derby are doing that themselves.

Rooney took over Derby in a poor state, they have only got worse, thats not down to having a joke of a manager.

Damn, the slander keeps on going. A neutral would think this thread is about Slippy or someone like that, not one of our biggest legends ever. :wenger:

I wish some of you would keep your profound opinions to yourself, better to not say anything if you've got nothing good to say at all, out of respect.

Looking at this page, I'm not really seeing much slander, there's a bit of light criticism but calling it slander seems a bit emotional.

Agreed, it’s pathetic.

Thruth is, were Rooney ever unfortunate enough to meet those who seem to revel in hating him, no doubt they’d probably piss themselves with excitement before begging for a selfie or autograph.

It's as funny as it's sad that.

I'm not a betting man myself but i'd put a bit of cash on Rooney's managerial career being over in a few years.

Love Rooney, really do but you could never really see him as being the manager type. It's almost like he ran before he could walk, he would be a good coach, great training some of the younger lads but a manager ...

Its a shame that most players go straight to management, have a terrible time and get sacked and thats it. All that footballing knowledge that could be passed on in a coaching (not manager) role lost.

Then they end up as a pundit instead which rarely goes well.

I’m not sure how much you watch Derby, but as I said before, a lot of my family are season ticket holders at Derby. I will take their word over someone who is Rooney fan than a Derby fan.

Isn’t he also suing someone for attempted blackmail?? The the video trending at weekend was disgusting and had the genders been reversed would have been calling for their head.

The nonsense he gets involved in off the training ground certainly doesn't help his credibility as a football manager. How are you supposed to instill a sense of integrity, direction and discipline around a group when you're off doing the stuff he does? You just wouldn't see it from good managers. I cannot think he'll be a good manager until he at least sorts that out, and that's just one aspect of being a manager.

Agreed, miracle he's still in a job. Not sure why a manager who gets so little time off would want to be out without his family. You'd think she'd had enough of him by this stage.

This might be true, but Derby as a club have been in the shit for a while. They really shouldn't be in the Championship and should've been docked points.

I don't debate what they feel.

As someone who has followed Derby for a long time (I used to spend a lot of time there), I feel he came into the job when Derby were at a low point, galvanized them for a period before the off pitch issues started to have a major impact.

They will feel different views than me as they support the club and pay money to watch, but their ire shouldn't be at the manager who kept them in the division, it should be at Cocu and the board for the mess they are in. They don't have enough senior players for full training sessions!!

Name me one club that has off pitch/board room issues that perform on the pitch?
Look at Blackpool, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn etc etc.

I have no real feelings towards Rooney other than he's a club legend, with regards to him being manager if another team, it won't bother me of he makes it or not, but I think people are misguided by thinking he's doing a poor job.

I agree, but just because other clubs have hired idiots to be their managers doesn't mean that Rooney is decent. Anybody hiring him, can't be surprised when he fails.

He doesn't come across as the brightest of all and I'm sure you need a good IQ to make it to the top.
I can see a Gary Neville type of path with his career. I guess time will tell, but I'm also not so sure Derby County is the right environment for him to build experience.
We all saw what happened with Ole at Cardiff.
Time will tell, but I'd throw a tenner as well.

Can tell Rooney will be one of those who you look back on in years time like "Remember when he was a manager?" - Like with Gary Neville, Tony Adams, Paul Merson, Alan Shearer. Roy Keane too, although he did quite a decent job at first..

When Rooney is a pundit and talking about football though, i think he speaks quite a lot of sense. I hope i'm wrong and he does wonders and gets the backing next season.

True, but likewise doesn't mean he will fail.

I mean, I'm sure he will fail to some peoples eyes at Derby, as they can't see the bigger picture and neither know nor care what plight they are in.

I don't think Rooney has the proper mentality and maturity for a managerial position, let alone one at a club littered with problems. He has a lot of responsibility in his private and professional life and he still seems to be clinging on to his early 20s going by the way he conducts himself off the pitch. Shame on him.

With ample talent, depth in squad, mediocre rivals and easy draws Gareth Southgate is expected to do that much bar minimum. Even David Moyes can win a league with City's squad and even average one can be called greatest manager. So why not Wayne.
