Tell that to ivanovic, he was utterly dogshit last season and Mourinhou inexplicably trusted him .
I can see same thing happening here. Rooney can literally shit on the field and somehow get away with it.

If one player is playing garbage you can throw them under the bus. Chelsea had 10 in their starting 11, bit more difficult to do anything about that, without playing the under 21s.

Rooney scored a goal, which is what Jose wants him to do. It'll be hard for him to drop him now. Once Rooney stops scoring, he might find himself on the bench but until he scores in every 3rd or 4th game, he's doing what Jose wants from him, so you lot better get comfortable with it.

Somebody on reddit made a compilation of his team of the week performance.

The editor is a hero. Long may he continue. Maybe hope it gets tweeted and people in the media pay attention?

If you look at those incidents, there weren't even in 'difficult' situations i.e he wasn't massively pressured/closed down etc. They were bad touches because of his lack of touch/ability.

Rooney is a goal scorer and probably the best in the squad, however, what if we had 10 functional outfield players on the pitch that could string one or two passes together and with decent touch/ability?

The whole team would improve and incidently we'll have more threats from our other attacking players.

It's not rocket science, look at how we performed better after RVN and even after Ronaldo (as a team despite the quality on the pitch). Obviously, those examples are in a different context because they were performing but becoming TOO much of the focal point. Rooney is the focal point (by hindrance) and NOT performing.

Absolutely not, agree with everything else.

To be fair I said probably. Between him and Zlatan, given what Rooney has achieved for Utd in the past and the quality he has shown when played as a no.9 IF you create chances for him (basically just let him hang inside the box), I gave him benefit of the doubt. Others haven't been in the game or at Utd long enough to compare for me.

both Zlatan and Martial are better finishers at the moment

So, just out of interest:

Has any club ever had a captain, soon-to-be-record goal scorer and long time servant that was so hated by its own fans?

I don't live in or around Manchester, and don't get to many games. Is this thread even representative of the general feeling towards Rooney among the local and match going fans?

I don't just mean the 'he's not what he was and shouldn't be starting' type opinions - which you can agree or disagree with, but are fair enough - but rather the seemingly relentless desire to criticise, pillory, insult and do him down for the slightest little thing, while determinedly ignoring his good points?

Or is there indeed just an angry minority who are shouting much louder than everyone else to skew the debate, and who have found their home on the Cafe?

It's because of his 3 years of continually shit form

If this is a one month blip nobody would critize him, the fact that it took 3 years for him to be critized speaks alot about him, any other player not wayne rooney would be hounded out of the club (with or without contract saga) : Rvp, Kagawa, Nani, BFS, Di Maria, etc

Why can't you guys accept that he's being critized heavilly simply because : HE"S SHIT, and that's got nothign to do with agenda/scouse/contract etc.

You can piss on our club by asking world breaking contract as long as you play well nobody would give a flying piss.

How to stop all this is on Rooney's hand, just play well and the critics will stop.

I think that he's passed now judging his form during LVG's 2 years and Moyes's year (where he were good the first half of the season). The year before he was in cold with Fergie but somehow managed to get 15+ goals and had some terrific performance at City, Chelsea and Madrid away.

I can't see Mourinho dropping the club's symbol directly. I just hope that by playing him week in week out, the dressing room will se that he's not good enough to play and will be benched.

It's just politics and not annoying some dressing rooms leader and maybe some in the board too.

I doubt that Mourinho will let him play 10 games in a row with such a little impact on the team.

Just hope that Mkhitraryan was indeed brought here to replace him asap

He was poor hence he was dropped for the second leg at home.

the problem is that with his pub style on the pitch, he can't even get injured

Rooney wouldn't start for any out of Arse, Chelsea, City, Pool or Tottenham, so there is no way he should start for us.

Altough I suspect that in Rooneys case it is very much Mourinho giving him enough rope to hang himself. 10 or so vintage shitshows at #10 and he will drop him without unsettling the dressing room. In fact, with the ambitious guys we have around now it will probably cause more turmoil in the dressing room not dropping him than dropping him.

This for me is the crux of the entire argument. In this form, he wouldn't start for most stop clubs. So why should he start here? What he's done before(he's a legend) shouldn't come into it.

Not really. That's a compilation of every bad touch. There's another (much longer) video knocking round of his overall performance. Which give a more accurate impression of his game. Some bad bits. Some good bits. Not great but not terrible either.
Well said. The levels of desperation in here are mindboggling. No doubt this will forever be remembered as the game where Rooney didn't control a single ball, therefore not complete a single pass and will get dragged up and re-posted again and again as to categorize this as "one of the worst performances in the history of football" (along with all those other "worst performances in the history of football" he has in his archives). 45 seconds of an 85minute appearance (essentially 2 poor touches, the dive, a poor pass and a dribble out of play under pressure, hmm the stats didn't lie then I guess? 5 poor usages of possession out of 55 on the stat sheet.. appears correct, who knew? I think we can dispense with labeling shots on target, a bizarre moment of "Rooney stood near a foul", being fouled and retaining the ball under pressure as "lowlights").

Essentially it was a complete fabrication of reality when many claimed that if the team played well and Rooney played well then nobody would have the grounds to complain. They'll dig up as much unnecessary rubbish as they can, continue to moan and make this thread as insufferable as they possibly can. Naive to have thought otherwise.

I am looking forward to the game to night, I hope he does well for his own sake at the very least.

Tbf that was a poorly struck shot. You'd expect a number 10 for a team with title aspirations to have made the keeper work a lot harder from such a presentable chance.

As usual the truth is somewhere between the ott criticism of his performance and the ott defense of him. He was not as atrocious as some would make out, but if you think he played well you are just as incorrect. It was a barely acceptable performance, assuming that that level of performance is a: near the bottom end of his scale, and b: not a regular occurrence. Given the past two years though, people can be forgiven for not thinking either of those.

One of the simplest tasks or questions is, "if you saw Rooney playing (current 2015/16 form) for Everton right now, would you be pleased to hear we were signing him?"

I personally think you're lying if you say yes. That's my point. He's finished at this level and while I have no issue with him being a squad player as many before him have had to transition to, it's the relentless first XI starts that annoys so many people.

Bar the goal he's the worst player on the pitch. Including Bournemouth.

Any epl level players are expected to be able to trap a ball, let alone wayne rooney.

And this is not only one game. Against everton last year he lost the ball 10 times in a match. That's awful even for championship level football

The defending of Rooney on here is every bit as hysterical & melodramatic as the criticism; maybe more so, in fact.

I think Mourinho is just hoping that Pogba hits the ground running, making him our 'face of the club'-elect before he gives Rooney the drop.

Disagree, people who defend Rooney still acknowledge he's been poor for some time now and needs to be replaced, people who criticise him will do that even if he's having a good match trying to downplay him at any given chance.

How so? All of us who defend him: we have not once said he is brilliant or good. We are criticizing him for everything he does wrong but the haters of Rooney criticize him for ridiculous stuff such as leaking out news to the media, having planted journalists in the media, having so much power in the club that the manager can't drop him, pr stunts in the media, his wages that he is stealing and over exaggerating how poor he was. Rooney was not as bad as people make out to be last game.

The video compilation you see up there is also pretty trivial. Attacking players often have off games when they lose the ball all the time. Martial and Rooney were on the same level last game.

The levels of desperation in your attempts at defending him are are the only mindboggling things here. A gif was posted where Rooney lost the ball some pages ago, you claimed he was the farthest upfront or something, I joked that if a video was posted of all the times Rooney lost the ball someone will try explaining all of them and here you are. Do you have another video portraying Rooney in a better light or are you the one 'fabricating reality'. The victim complex you have for Rooney is amazing, you seem to be genuinely hurt whenever people say he's shit, so you keep making up reasons in your head why people would think he's shit(hatred, agenda) refusing to accept that maybe, just maybe, everybody thinks he's shit because he's actually been shit for a while

It is absolutely laughable to even consider suggesting that.

I'm sorry but that part is just so ironic because the experts, the media and the managers do not believe that and you often see posts on here along the lines of "why doesn't anyone else see this?!".

If you find it laughable then it just goes to show how anti Rooney everyone's mindset has become. Note that Rooney has had more of these average and poor games while Martial has been having great games but last week alone, they were both average.

Can you really say that after reading posts from the likes of @shamans, @Perrick Dubois , that guy sir scholesy or whatever he is called, @NessunDorma and couple of others?

Nah, Rooney was outright garbage. He lost the ball countless times, killed a few counter attacks, and generally looked really sluggish.

Martial attacked their defense and caused problems all second half, leading to two goals. He was our main attacking outlet.

It's ridiculous to say Martial was equal to Rooney on Sunday. Not even close.

"Martial attacked their defense and caused problems" is a very vague sentence. There's no way we can discuss performances if we saw it differently.

Perhaps, but the difference was Martial wasn't a liability.

You score a goal and you are a liability?

No it's not. There were about 3 occasions when he took the ball around half field, turned, and ran at their defenders - which led to some good chances (one of which was Zlatan's goal).

Rooney wasn't even close to that sort of threat at any point in the game.

I don't specifics of the game of the top of my head. All I can tell you is when I saw that game I thought both Martial and Rooney were average in their play.

They also see how bad he's become and they're just trying to counter other posters who'll go such lengths in bashing Rooney. None of these posters considers Rooney to be Rooney of old, while his critics will go on about him being some evil mastermind who's controlling United from top to bottom.

There's nothing trivial about that video man, that has been the average Rooney performance for some time now, If you have any evidence Martial or anyone else was worse or same let us know. So you feel Martial should be getting as much stick as Rooney then? He probably will if he keeps this up for the next 3 years, while being captain and earning 300k a week. Till then could the Rooney 'lovers' stop shitting on our 20 year old best player last season in defense of Rooney? It's really pathetic reading these x player was worse nonesense
