Oh yeah, I forgot that he's definitely going, with 9 days left of the transfer window and the only official noises all season being Moyes' repeated denials that he is in any way for sale. Discount him.

The point is this: in no way would Lukaku make us a better team. You've stretched every single aspect of the situation to the very limit - Rooney leaving, RVP and Hernandez and Welbeck injured, our own youngsters given no game time at all except out of position, Kagawa only played on the wing - and still you can only see him getting games here and there and being 'a great option off the bench'. I could make a case that feeble for any player.

On the other hand, at Chelsea Lukaku is already clear second choice up front, and also seems to be getting game time on the 'wing' for them. Given Torres' Chelsea form, Lukaku could easily become first choice. So not only do United not need him, but Lukaku would be an idiot to give up such a great opportunity there, at a club who suit his style so perfectly, to come and be maybe-fifth-choice-if-Rooney-leaves at United.

:wenger:

 Do you lose all your common sense when it comes to rooney? The whole discussion between us started from me saying that we should ask for mata and lukaku if chelsea want rooney. Do you understand this line? Chelsea get rooney and we get mata and lukaku. Chelsea rooney. Manchester united lukaku. Got it?

Thats why I said subtract rooney from the equation as lukaku will be part of that deal. So once again chelsea sign rooney and we get lukaku. Understood? Hence him being our fourth choice forward. Again, I didnt say all three of them will get injured. If you read my post which seems hard, it says that if one of them gets injured it would leave us with only three forwards(four inc. kagawa) for two postions which is no where near enough for us.I dont expect the trio of youngsters to play much this season anyway seeing as they have no first team experience.

And I also didnt say that kagawa will play exclusively on the wing, if he does do that and then we will be rotating three strikers for two positions which is easily manageable. And lukaku would get plenty of games in this scenario.

If chelsea sign rooney, he will be demoted to either third or fourth choice(ba) for a club which only uses one striker so essentially the same situation as we have here. Oh and if we do play henriquez and wilson on the wing it wont be out of position as thats where I expect them to get a break through and they have played loads of time in that position.

I'd certainly rather keep Rooney than swap him for anyone at Chelsea, but if he has to go, then I'd be pleased to see Mata coming in as a makeweight. It would be shite to see Rooney leave and see no player come in at all. Rooney looks like he'll always be an attacking midfielder so long as RvP is in the side, so Mata would fill that gap left by Rooney. Mata, Kagawa and Nani interchanging all over the place behind RvP would be glorious, but I still think Rooney, Kagawa and Nani would be better.

Selling Rooney to Chelsea under any circumstances would be a massive mistake imo as it solves their main problem, whether they lose Mata or not - he might be one of their best players but they still have other very good attacking midfielders. We shouldn't, under any circumstances be facilitating a main title rival in any way. I'd rather we sold him to Arsenal - they'd still have other pressing concerns that Rooney alone can't compensate for.

just been sent this, how true it is I have no idea.

Manchester United have made an informal inquiry to Chelsea about the possibility of bringing Juan Mata to Old Trafford this transfer window, sources from both clubs have told ESPN.

It is unknown at this point whether the contact has been part of the ongoing Wayne Rooney saga, or whether United would be open to a long-mooted straight swap between the players, just that their interest has been piqued and they believe a deal could be possible.

This is pretty much spot on. Rooney to Chelsea would probably revitalize him, which would boost their title chances even more following Mourinho's return. If he went to Arsenal, I'd imagine they would struggle to make the top four.

He's not mental but Mourinho has a history of using wider players with the pace and willingness to run in behind and at defences. Duff, Robben, Di Maria, Eto'o out wide for example. Mata wouldn't be considered quite as athletic as these players. And he's Spanish so he probably doesn't like him by default.

That's a nay from me. Mata is our best player, Mourinho is not mental.

You should tell Jose - he might pick him. Left out first week for De Bruyne and now the want Willian.

Mata could, bizzarely, be on the move.

A Mirror journalist just said on Talksport that Woodward sent a letter to Abramovich telling him the club are not selling Rooney and to not make another bid. Take that for whatever it's worth.

Did he use a quill and parchment.I would have thought the club would have come out publicly to slam Jose and his claim of a third bid.

Absolutely no we should sell to Chelsea for money only. We dont need money. We need to make sure we stay ahead of our main competitors and not strengthen them. Even for Mata, I wouldn't sell to them. Rooney at Chelsea will make the Chelsea team complete and we dont want that. We simply should convince him to stay or only sell to a foreign club.

Have you seen their defence?

Chelsea need Rooney a hell of a lot more than we need Mata. Would be stupid to consider it IMO, unless there is substantial cost involved too. I'm a huge Mata fan too, one of the top players in the league

who cares how good we "might be" if Rooney stays, he doesn't want to be here. let him go.

can you honestly expect great performances from him for the entire year as he doesn't want to be here? What happens when this season is over? What happens the next time something doesn't go his way and he decides to hold the club hostage again? What happens if he doesn't sign a contract extension and walks away on a free then joins Chelsea?
An unhappy Rooney at United is better than a happy, goal scoring Rooney at Chelsea. And at the end of the contract he can go away, a year older, and slower.

Im actually quite comfortable with him being made to stay, players need to realise contracts aren't solely promises of how much wedge gets thrown at them, and clubs like Utd/Spurs/Liverpool making them honour the terms of their contracts makes me happy.

Mourinho on Mata: 'There's no speculation. He is not a player we want to sell.'

Great, so he can swap him for Wantaway Wayne then.

Mourinho on Rooney: 'In this moment, I don't care (if he comes)'

On players (Rooney probably): 'I am not disappointed, we are willing to try and will try till the end of the season'

Hopefully with Chelsea signing Willan and Mourinho's quotes today, it'll drive Rooney to wake up and smell the coffee. I think he's staying.

but Rooney doesn't want to play for the club. Do we just forget this one? I'm with most in that we should sell him but not to chelsea.

If he did want to leave the club, where would he go? I don't think it was never his intention to go abroad. Even if PSG came in for him, I actually think he wouldn't have sniffed at it. No one can deny Rooney's love for football. I'm not saying he isn't thinking about money - but I think he'd want to play in high standard of football.

Alas, if he stayed in England - where would he go? I think Chelsea was always his aim. Arsenal? No. City? He knows the ramifications if he went there. Chelsea? It was likely.

Now Rooney's last road out of United is closed, he'll stay. In time, he'll want to properly stay here again. Optimistic? Potentially.
