Always thought Rooney was vastly over-rated because he's British, but his form has definitely dipped a fair bit and I honestly don't think he'd be as big of a loss now. You could bring in better players for less than you'd sell him for.
l

Agree with that. There were a couple of games this season in which he was the worst player on the pitch. One in particular was nothing short of shocking.

He wanted better players around him, he got them.

He is definitely not as big a loss as he would have been a few seasons ago. Don't get me wrong I would like him to stay but if he really wants to go then let's cash in on him.

Watching these final scenes at the end of an era for both Ferguson and Scholes makes you realise how selfish Rooney's timing was, casting a slight shadow over proceedings. Does not deserve this club, honestly. Needs to go.

When you're done being emotional it might be worth considering that he "requested a transfer" 2 weeks ago.

In a interview with Sky (Gary Neville) Scholes said he picked a good week to retire as all the talk has been about SAF leaving, he then went on to add "Rooney handing in a transfer request!" which will keep the cameras off him

It was all done in a joking manner but I think the way Scholes worded it wasn't best... unless he actually let slip (by mistake) that Rooney handed in a request

I thought it was common knowledge that Rooney told Fergie he wanted to leave? Basically requesting a transfer.

I'm disappointed that he's off, but oh well. It's his career, he has every right to want to leave. Hopefully we'll get a good fee for him, and potentially use that money to sign a player of the same caliber in midfield or something.

I really dont think Scholes is the kind of person to joke about something if theres no truth in it. He's very smart when it comes to not adding pressure and speculation. Wouldnt surprise me if its true about asking to move on

RvP with Kagawa behind him is far stronger than replacing either with Rooney.

I don't think it will be a big loss as long as we get a good price for him and reinvest it. If we signed Bale and a CM we would be laughing;

----Carrick ----- CM
Nani -- Kagawa -- Bale
----------RvP

That is a hell of a lineup. Life will go on after Rooney and I'm not convinced he is worth all the drama. It's probably just being downplayed by the club so as to not interfere with the more important events of SAF and Scholes retiring. After the season ends I'm sure the truth will come out and he will be gone.

Not convinced we would need a other striker - RvP, Welbeck and Hernandez is enough if we aren't regularly playing 2 strikers. CM and the wings are higher priority for me, even if Rooney goes.

Bet365 has him 1/2 to leave this summer.

Simply because a player has decided that their career would be better served by leaving doesn't mean that matters can't be handled in a dignified frank fashion, not with Rooney apparently.

There was nothing in what Scholes said, I thought it was pretty obviously a joke. Rooney not making the bench is all the confirmation you need, though.

I love how people still cling on with Nani in these teams, when its clear he's further outs of favour than probably anyone else at the club.

They are both more number 9s. Of course we could move RVP back. He could easily play there.

RVP auditioning for the role tonight!

Lets not forget that if Wayne really does exit, we will want to buy a striker that can bring in the 20+ goals a season that he gives us. I suppose Lewandowski and Falcao are about as prolific as they come in front of goal these days.

We've also been blessed with RVP being relatively injury free this year, but you can't expect him to play every match next year and there will be plenty of squad rotation. Losing Rooney would mean a big chunk of playing time has opened up for someone to take up.

We don't know if he's off, his transfer request was refused according to the story and it will be up to Moyes if he stays.

It was strongly rumored that Rooneys camp leaked both stories, transfer and Fergie retirement. So this is probably punishment .

Agree it's one hell of a line up! But I cannot for a second see us getting Bale

RVP has played a number of games in the 10 role Rooney has usually played. RVP has been picked with Hernandez on a number of occasions and played there each time and the partnership looked healthy enough

Btw Scholes didnt say it was a joke. Bloke on sky did.

There is also that Japanese lad called Kagawa who would do well in the #10 role.

Rooney may have dissapointed us as fans but lets not fool ourselves about his talent. He has performed wonders for us over his years at the club and as been a great legendary player for us.

If he wants to leave, he's a tit and I won't shed a single tear but let's not pretend will wont miss him.

How did Rooneys camp know before anyone else?

Honestly you lot would swallow anything.

Im sure he will get plenty of playing time regardless of whether its central or out wide.

If as expected both Nani and Rooney are gone then surely we will bring in another striker to bolster the ranks.

This thread isn't about Nani but I can see him staying if Moyes gives him some reassurances.

I can't recall where I heard it but didn't he say he would stay if Spurs got CL football? If they fail to qualify I could see him starting to get itchy feet - United would be a good choice as we have/had his idols in Giggs and Ronaldo here.

While we shouldn't fool ourselves about his talent, we should also remember that his talent isn't irreplaceable. Another 20+ goals a season striker and creativity focus shifted deeper into midfield and out on the wings and United will quickly move forward.

Granted hes a talent but realistically since that season where he acted like a prat to get a better contract hes not exactly set the world a light has he? When he did sign i'll agree it was some of the best we've seen of him but since hes really been hit and miss, this season (while he has impressive stats) has been really off the pace.

We will miss him but not as much as a couple of years ago that's for sure, I'd rather see Kagawa play a more creative role than Rooney

Really?

He is talented, but one we can live without. What may hurt is the likelihood that we may have made some decision to build with him in mind.

Definitely, I think this season hes had a handful of games where I've thought hes looked good in that role. The other times he just looks wasteful and uninterested even though that's supposed to be where "he wants to play".

"Sometimes as a player you make bad choices and bad decisions … sometimes you say things you shouldn't. I want to be here for the next 10 years. Just look at Giggs and Scholes … they're an example to us all. And let's be honest, where else can you go from here?"
