Rumours circulating on the net that United have dropped Rooney because of fears he could have potentially failed a drugs test today...

Yeah heard he tested positive for horse meat after he had over dosed on a Mcdonalds.

We missed him badly today. He's always up for these games and probably would have put one away.

I understand this comment MIGHT infuriate a few, but if you placed Rooney where RVP was today, he would have scored that volley.

Laughable that some in the past say we can do without him - we rely on him at times, and we missed him dearly today.

Hope he can make the City game.

We always miss Rooney. It was thought that RvP would alleviate our reliance on Wayne, but sadly, not in this form it doesn't.

I got heavly criticised for saying it after the Madrid game but he is our best player. It would be a great shame if we lost him in the summer.

Bebe would have scored from the same position as well. Rooney is one awkward player. Always missing when you need him the most. Got himself into trouble to miss the FA Cup Semis against City at Wembley and he did his groin today as well. Rooney should go and sort his fitness, diet and lifestyle. Messi/Ronaldo wouldn't have missed such an important game.

We missed Rooney today and we missed him vs Sunderland. He does well to link midfield and attack and even RvP does better with Rooney alongside him. And besides all of that, he's really a brilliant finisher and scores even when playing poorly which is something RvP has been struggling to. It'll be a massive loss if he doesn't make it for the Derby.

People underestimate how difficult it is to play that number 10 role for Manchester United. Rooney has been criticised for his close control and touch in that role yet when players like Carrick were finding Welbeck in the role, his control let him down as well. Welbeck's best moments came from using his pace and skill in wider areas with more space. Kagawa did well possession wise vs Sunderland but wasn't a goal threat. I think what Rooney does for us is quite under appreciated from certain members on this board.

Of the six meaningful games we've lost this season, he's only started one.

Hang on, what? You know that he had a groin problem because of his lifestyle, do you? Or is it just another way to have a go at him?

Meth is a hell of a drug!!

Im with you about the city semi, but anyone can injure a groin at any time.

... thats blasphemous surely?

Indeed. There's no doubt who I'd rather have stick around given the choice. Sults is a true gent. Dodgy as feck... but a true gent all the same. :p

Oh jesus, we lose a game and now Rooney is our best player and we're 'toothless' without him?

You guys don't waste time do you?

Even when Rooney's touch is off or he looks slow there is something about him being in the team that makes us more like United.

Eh? When Rooney is off form, he's the worst 'best' player I've ever witnessed. His whole game goes to absolute pieces. He's usless when off form.

I beg to differ.

Even when Rooney is having spells of playing poorly he is still capable of scoring regularly, when others maybe wouldn't. A couple of weeks ago for example a lot of people were in this thread complaining about his performances saying that he wasn't playing particularly well but he was still on a run of 10 goals in his last 11 starts or something, and there were a fair few assists on top too.

So even when Rooney isn't at his best in terms of overall performance, he still contributes with his goals and assists. His passes can be going astray all game but he can often still pop up and create something and sometimes that's what matters, sometimes wins will be scrappy and ugly.

He is our current in form striker along with Hernandez so it's quite unsurprising that when we have an uninspiring game like today where we didn't create much he is missed on here. Andrew~ some people think he is our best player regardless of whether we have won or lost and they're fully entitled to that opinion. Why shouldn't he be?

This isn't the only game we have looked out of sorts without him, first half against Tottenham at home and Norwich away earlier in the season are two games that spring to mind instantly. That link between midfields and striker clearly wasn't there today, Rooney also links up well with the wingers, bringing them into play in the final third and that was also missing.

We definitely missed his ability to link the midfield and attack today. We were absolutely screaming for someone like that and it was massively frustrating that we didn't bring Kagawa on (or start him) in Rooney's absence. Welbeck and Hernandez are both very good footballers but neither of them have the combination of positional sense and talent to do what Rooney does. That's not to say Rooney's perfect or always spot on with this but there was a huge void today a lot of the time where a player like him should've been. It was made considerably worse by not having Cleverley or Anderson in the centre pushing up and also with us having two deeper midfielders in Carrick and Jones.

We couldn't play Rooney obviously, but not playing or at least bringing Kagawa on was pretty poor stuff tactically in my opinion.

I beg to differ.

No one is saying Rooney shouldn't be our best player; he just isn't.

In your opinion. Who someone considers our 'best' or most important player is an opinion not a fact and in some people's opinion Rooney is theirs and there is no reason why he shouldn't be. Some will say Carrick, RvP, DDG or even Rafael this season and there is nothing wrong with any of those opinions either. Rooney's importance to this team is downplayed a lot but on days like today it's quite obvious, hence it being pointed out.

Right. So if, in my opinion, Ashley Young was better than Rooney, that would be a perfectly valid thing to believe?

There's no easy answer to this, but I guess I would put it down to one of Carrick, Van Persie, De Gea, Rio/Evans. The difference between those players and Rooney is marginal, but I think they are more important to the team than he is. Choosing who is the definitive best is difficult because they all play different positions though.

I could accept Carrick, as more important because we really have nobody else. But I can't say RVP has done anything to suggest he is a better or even more important player than Rooney. He is a brilliant striker but Rooney can play in a variety of positions to a brilliant standard including the number 9 type role that RVP has occupied to similar success. In fact he has had more prolific seasons than the one RVP has enjoyed.

The fact that Rooney is great in the number 10 role though means we are very lucky to have both.

You must be watching a different team to me. Because, firstly, the only position where Rooney has been consistently 'brilliant' at is playing as the main centre forward. He's definitely not a great number 10, even though he has games where he plays really well there. Which is the better number 9? I think that would be a very interesting discussion, but Fergie clearly thinks Van Persie is. Regardless, Van Persie has been by far our most productive attacking player so far this season, so how you can say he hasn't shown anything is beyond me.

I see where you're coming from, but neither Rio nor Evans are even our best defenders. To say Evans is better in his respective position or more important to United is just laughable really.

Rooney doesn't play in a variety of positions to a brilliant standard. He does an ok job, not a brilliant job. At least RVP gets the basics right, even when not on form something which Rooney doesn't. And RVP has that touch of class about him which Rooney doesn't now (he used to). Until Rooney can consistently do the basics well even when he's having a bad game, he isn't our best player. As simple as that.

Well, definitely Vida and Rio are, if we're talking about them at full health, easily our best defenders. But neither of them has been at full health for quite a while now and I think Evans has taken steps towards replacing one of them (albeit Vida was out for a significant part of the season). It might be slightly controversial, but Evans has been our best defender this season.

Incidentally, my girlfriend is a Serb who supports United, and you can imagine the reaction I got from her when I suggested this to her.
