A shame, though, as we now have to deal with a situation where one of our top players now has to wonder whether he's the next Ruud or Beckham, a dead man walking. We posters have no idea and for all we know Alex and Wayne may have played a round of golf in Qatar yesterday. Let's just pray that the extent of the damage by not playing Rooney until very late is that we got dumped out of the CL.

I don't think so. Just saw a good interview with Steve McClaren on Sky Sports.

There's a transcript of it here: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...s/steve-mcclaren-wayne-rooneys-future-1726883

I don't think there's any truth to these stories. Rooney seems to be enjoying his football with us right now.

The media have consistently increased his wages over the 2 years from around 150k to 300k. They just love to throw random figures out there.

Yea it wasnt that long ago since 200k a week was a controversial, unconfirmed number the media threw about, and now they have decided hes managed to up his wage to 300k a week somehow.

And the sale prices being thrown around :wenger: 20-25m for Rooney, while Bale is apparantly in for a "summer swoop" of at least £60m.

That these rumours are taken seriously is laughable

If Rooney had started and Nani was left out, we'd have had all the stories about him being off again instead. Had to be somebody

Good effort but you're no Striker10.

Oh shit I got Strikered!!!! I understand how it happened to him now. It kept coming up with a database error so I just pushed refresh/submit on my phone about 10 times.

I can see what Fergie was thinking, we needed quick players on the counter attack, and more importantly, players who can dribble at speed and beat players one on one. He picked the right players for this, i.e. Welbeck, Nani and to a lesser extent Giggs.

Rooney might be a lot of things, but he's not the greatest dribbler at speed, and was highly unlikely to go past players the way Nani was doing. Against Real we needed pure pace, tight dribbling and ability to break quickly, Rooney just didn't fit the bill.

I'd still have played him though, because of his big game ability.

Uhm Rooney is a great counter attack player. Remember that goal against Arsenal 2 seasons ago. Brilliant counter attack.

True, but he is two years older, had two years of injuries, its not unreasonable to assume that SAF might prefer a younger/pacier option for that system.

James Lawton of The Independent's gone all RAWK:

In one defining scene the mobster played by Robert De Niro in the film Goodfellas takes a long and withering look at an accomplice who has outlived his value to the firm. It was something that resembled a fatal glare and there have been quite a number of these directed at Rooney by Ferguson.

With Giggs on one wing, we're more likely to pick pace on the other wing. Giggs was the man drafted in to help against Ronaldo and we picked around that imo. Welbeck did a better job on Alonso than Rooney would have thats for sure. And RVP leads the line better than Rooney. Its as simple as that as far as I'm concerned

You cross Alex Ferguson at your peril: the Iron Bru and shortbread-munching Glaswegian former lumberjack never forgets. Just ask Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Lennie Godber, and a dog which once peed on the Carrington pitch; that dog is now unemployed, and scratching a living as a hamster.

.....

I have no clue whether we want to sell Rooney or not obviously but the fact that some of you think it's completely implausible is very funny to me.

It's not about how implausible it is, it's about the complete lack of anything to suggest that it's about to happen. Yes, we probably could sell Rooney. But why do you think we're going to? Because he didn't start one game for obvious tactical reasons? Or, sorry, because two years ago he had a brief scuffle with the club because he wanted higher wages, and all the evidence since has been that everyone's thoroughly over that little episode?

I'm not a murderer. Are you going to arrest me on suspicion of being one because two years ago I got pissed at someone and said 'god, I'm going to kill you one of these days', and then yesterday you walked into the kitchen and I was chopping tomatoes with a knife?

Rooney is more disposable now than at any other point post Ronaldo, thats for sure. But he's still one of our best players and he's English

The question about Rooney is as he peaked ,and as he turned out how we expected him to be, i would say yes and no.

Im not sure if he has peaked.

Though i will say that he hasn't reached the level that was expected - but that's probably only because there were such high expectations on him after the 2004 Euros.

Also true. But if SAF's reason for leaving out Rooney was that he wanted a counterattacking setup it would have made more sense to leave out van Persie.
It was a weird decision imo. If Welbeck hadnt had a very good game there would have been a lot more criticism going Fergie's way.

Definitely has peaked.

I really dont see him getting better than he is now - His next goal is to reach a high level of consistency.

And if my auntie had balls shed be my uncle.....In Fergie I trust :)

I bet you are.

Yeah, he's peaked. I'm not sure he has reached the level we all expected - what did we expect?

Or rather, gastronomical.

You're being silly now.

And exactly how was it "obvious tactical reasons?" Did you, or anybody think Rooney wouldn't start on Tuesday? That's where the surprise is and it's another small question mark next to Rooneys name.

I don't understand why people are so shocked about rumours after the last couple of seasons. The contract, his personal life, his fitness, his potential replacements.. They all add up, it's not about Rooney being left out of one match.

Exactly. It's fecking ridiculous, like this thread for the last day or two.

I don't think Rooney being dropped was indicative of anything and there are plenty of other papers who aren't using him being dropped as their reasoning for why he'll be sold. It was suggested PSG were interested a couple of weeks ago before the Madrid game even occurred.

Like I said, I have no idea if we want to sell him or not but the idea that there's no chance we ever would is laughable.

There were people expecting he could become the best player in the world. I certainly wasnt one of them but I've definitely seen those posts. Also when Ronaldo left people were saying Rooney would become just as good to fill the void. I think hes done a lot but falls short of that.

Yep, they're at each other's throats alright...

The redfaced Glaswegian is like a sinister old elephant - the mightiest in his domain, he never forgets, and if you get in his way you will be trampled eventually. Wayne Rooney seems to be the latest of several noteworthy players, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy amongst them, who, like unfortunate critters, will fall victim to his 25 year long stampede through the bushes of Carrington

...

I can imagine the newspaper captions for each of those photos:

"Your number's up, Roo"

'Fuming Fergie snubs Rooney's attempt at reconciliation'
