He's at least four times better than Alderweireld and Vertonghen at the moment since they both conceded 4 goals yesterday. Top 3 might be a stretch though since Bailly and Smalling kept a clean sheet.
The problem I have with VVD is he seems.to have a brain fade moment in him whenever he is put under pressure. It's sad and funny how defenders are now not primarily judged by how they defend but how they pass. I have seen many top defenders and VVD doesn't fall in that bracket. 5 to 6 months ago some United fans called him donkey and I laughed then coz he is not and same way I laugh now when media and some liverpool fans call him the best when he is far far from it.
I do notice odd moments where he switches off but who would you say is better than him in the league at the moment?
Funny how this kind of reasoning only comes up with respect to Van Dijk but is conveniently ignored for the consensus best CB in the world for the last decade who fits this definition to a tee.
He doesnt shade anything. It is not jealousy, it is matter of opinions. Jealousy would be me calling him shit , which he is not. He is a very good defender, one that would improve our squad but calling him best is going overboard or the narrative that media and scouse lovers want us to believe.

Toby and vertongen. Their performance for their country this summer was phenomenal. Even for spurs they have done consistently well.
Because this is the reason that liverpool fans bring to judge defenders and goal keepers. Haven't we already read how allison is better than de gea because he is better with feet.
I bet you can't find one Liverpool fan on here who has argued that. At a stretch, one could've said that Alisson fits our system better, but rest assured that 90% of our fan base would take De Gea over Alisson in a heartbeat, myself included.

He is basically Smalling with ball playing skills. Which means an excellent defender.

I’d put Kompany ahead as well. A fit Kompany is still the best defender in England for me.

I'm a bit torn on him. He has mistakes in him but on his day is one of the best around.
Due to injuries we rarely get to see him at his best.

Yeah. He's in that cycle of coming back into the team rusty and not getting his rhythm and reading up to speed before he succumbs to injury again. Good example would have been returning against Leicester last year after a couple of months out, and after two minutes wiping out Vardy which should have got him a red card, and only playing four games before breaking down again.
He's had a scrappy few years with that pattern, but his peak level - as a dominant all-round influence winning the PL Player of the Year - is a little under-appreciated IMO.
Pretty much. I'd dare say Smalling has slightly better defensive instincts but VVD is more dominant in the air and a better all rounder being good on the ball.
As for the goal against Napoli, he's come wide to fill in for an out of position fullback like all CBs have to do at times. Sometimes they can win the ball or hold up play, sometimes they cant. On this occasion Napoli are able to find a pass again exposing the fullback out of position. The ball comes across the box and Gomez isnt able to get there.

Smalling will do this often when Valencia is out of position. If the opposition score its not his fault. Varane will do this if Carvajal is out of position. If the opposition score its not his fault, he had to cover for someone else out of position. So no its not VVD's fault that Napoli scored.

He's a top defender. Whether he's the best or top 3 is a bit early to tell but he is there. Excellent signing for Liverpool. Mourinho should have gone for him.
If you do that, you make absolutely sure someone else is covering you. The danger is in the middle, not on the wing. You dont charge over without making sure you are not leaving a huge gap. Hard to tell on TV if he did that or got a call but it didn't look like it.
He's past his best. But at his peak, Kompany was much better than any defender currently in the PL.
I like VVD. Looks like the kind defender you want in your team. But he has lots to prove at the highest level and the giddyness from LFC fans is a tad much.
Concede on Sunday and it'll be 1 clean sheet in 8 against mighty Southampton at home and this is during their OMG they can challenge City purple patch.
Of course they have a great defence if they keep getting absolved from any goal they concede.

Thought both Liverpool centre backs looked good today (apart from the penalty incident).
City had a whole 2 shots on target. Liverpool's defense has been much better than their attack this season.
Ah yeah, Lovren with 2 penalties (not given) and Van Dyke with 1 penalty. Other than that they looked good.
Didn’t think the second Lovern one was a pen, Fernandinho was fouling. Lovern was so lucky on the first one though.
