Virgil van Dijk | Performances

It’s annoying when really good players get signed by rivals and then they... stay really good. This guy is one, yet we take punts on two other cbs for half the price each. Most of City’s signings in recent years have been obvious, they were just willing to pay the extra price for them at the time. Now they’re all bargains.

Thing is the market always catches up, because if you buy quality they will stay with the club long after their price becomes average and then cheap in retrospect.

Van Dijk, Salah, Mane... Now Allison, Keita, Shaqiri, etc. They have made good signings lately.

Meanwhile we continue with Young/Valencia as our fullbacks and Mata as RW.

Un ber lieabable!! Finally found our Stam/Rio/Vidic. Been too long in coming. If you want to know how much I'm happy that Klopp is a hypocrite my other hand is getting very tired.

Two handed Mini Wanks? Me too.

VVD should celebrate every clean sheet like that. Make it his own little thing you know.

How? Name me five centre backs that are significantly better than him. We're not talking peak PL era where we have the likes of Ferdinand, Vidic, Terry in the league, there's really not many great defenders and Van Djik has pretty much everything you would want.

He's easily top five for me, or at the very least deserves to be in the conversation, he's certainly not 'nowhere near'.
That's just my opinion

Great again - for me he’s the best in the league alongside Vertonghen.

Gutted he’s at Liverpool :(

Easily top3 CB in the league for me, might as well make his case to be considered the best one after this season. Very good yesterday again, Liverpool got a brilliant player that will serve them well.

He's a very good CB but Carragher calling him the best in the world and putting him alongside Ramos etc was just embarrassing.

It's offensive to players like Vertonghen and Alderweireld who have been putting in consistent top class performances for season after season in the PL. He has a good 6 months and all of a sudden he's the next Jap Stam?

Come off it. The Spurs duo were the best defence in the league for two out of the last three season's. Liverpool haven't even done that once yet. It was way OTT praise.

Still he's a Liverpool fan so it's what we expect...always over hype their own.

Him taking the piss out of Lovren for his best in the world comment is still my favourite thing about him.

I think he was similarly excellent for Southampton. As an individual performer, with his attributes, he's rightly in the conversation for best in the league. I certainly wouldn't swap either of those with Van Dijk. In fact, I wouldn't swap them both for Van Dijk.

Carragher is thick as they come and cannot see beyond his nose. Players like Chiellini, Varane, Hummels, Koulibaly all belong in the conversation, but because they don't play in the Premiership he probably doesn't acknowledge their existence.

VVD played against a complete donkey in Benteke yesterday, let's cool our jets before giving it the whole "best in the world" crap. I'll be interested to see how he fairs against Kane in a couple of weeks.

Hate to say this but I think that he is the best centre back right now.

Since his transfer to L'pool, he collected the most clean sheets. Also, his 1vs1 winrate, this season is currently at 95%, which is very impressive.

But the thing which impressed me the most is that it seems that he single-handedly diminished that culture of donkeyness in their back 4.

EPL CBs:
1. VVD
2. Verthongen
3. Alderweireld

I get that but I'd be interested to know five centre backs who you think are better in the league, because honestly I'm struggling to think of five competent ones.

Vertonghen, Bailly, Alderweireld, Azpi, ???? .. christ I'm just starting to realise how poor the CB quality is these days in the league, after that you have the likes of Stones, Otamendi, Smalling etc in contention. Sanchez too probably, but I feel he's too raw.

The big thing he is changing is the perception in the opposition that the game is still wide open when we are 2 goals up.

Exactly this. He is a dominating beast and when people say he has everything, they are right. I would like to see him on free kicks soon as well. We need to keep Gomez fit because I don't want the other two CBs we have alongside him as they always scare me.

Excuse me but no, both are better than VVD.

How about we see how Toby starts performing for a few more games before declaring him better than VVD? He's played what? One game since he's returned to the team?

Declaring him better? He was the best CB in the league the season before last, nothing has changed he just had an argument with the club and some injury issues which meant he sat a season out. He had two fantastic PL seasons back to back and there's no reason to believe he can't have another great season if he gets games, he oozes class.

I have no problem with Liverpool vans thinking VVD is better, shock horror as fans rate their own player higher, but Alderweireld proved himself long ago. He's a quality defender and if he stays free of injury will always be up there as one of the best in the league.

Agreed, though I haven’t seen anyone label him “the best in the world” and to be honest - “the best CB in the Premier League” is not that much, considering the competition. To me he’s certainly up there, especially with Toby being out for so long...

You are right, he has proved himself in the past 2 out of 3 seasons. I think he is class, Spurs made a great decision signing him from under the nose of Southampton but I would like to see him string together some solid games in a row for Spurs. You guys played Sanchez - Verthongen - Alderwielerld at the back on Saturday and along those two other beasts I'm sure he'll look like his old self. I'd still prefer VVD to him or his Belgian compatriot as he's also a few years younger.

 so all of a sudden he turned shit because he didn't want to sign a new deal at his club and VVD suddenly became better after 6 months at Liverpool?

I just meant let's see if Alderweireld can get back to his form of two seasons ago. I would prefer VVD in my team as I think he has the potential to be better and he is younger.

It was your man GNev who compared him to Jaap Stam.

Van dijk is comfortably the best in the league IMO. Good on the ball and comfortable enough with both feet, fast, strong, dominant in the air, commanding and good positioning. And hes consistent. Alderweireld, vertonghen and others are all very good, but none are as complete or quite as good as him. If he was at United, we'd be calling him one of the best in the world without a doubt.

Putting him alongside Ramos is an insult to VVD.

Jest read the first few pages of this thread and everyone had written him off after a few uncertain games early on.

Just goes to show why signings need to be given time. Knee-jerking everywhere these days.

It's as if he is a man playing against kids. That's the best way to describe it. I haven't seen a CB like this in feck knows how long (if ever), certainly not playing for LFC.

He's playing at a higher level than Alder and Vertonghen have ever achieved right now.

Did people really think he was going to be rubbish? Feel like they just wanted an opportunity to have a gleeful dig, deep down even though you overpaid I think most people knew he would be a good signing. Was fantastic at Southampton and was always looked a class above.

Man, he's very good but I don't think anybody does over dramatic like some Liverpool fans do. You've played nobody who has properly threatened you recently, he's not playing at a higher level than Vert and Alder 'ever achieved', behave. Those two were the lynchpin of the best PL defence two seasons ago, Toby was an absolute monster both defensively and bringing it out of the defence, last season Vertonghen was comfortably the best CB in the league. VVD is a physical beast who can look very impressive, but let's wait till you play a top side this season before declaring him the new Maldini, perhaps?

The way you describe him it's like you think he's the best CB ever, 2 games in to this season with you having played Palace and West Ham. Calm down ffs.

The thread starts after our game with Swansea where he was slightly at fault for their goal. The game after that was West Brom in the FA Cup (we lost 2-3). There are posts calling him a Dutch Chris Smalling and declaring him to be rubbish.

Feel like it's just fans trying to get a dig and a laugh in though to be fair, not really to be taken seriously. You get that kind of crap everywhere, when we conceded one bad goal against Newcastle it was suddenly 'best defenders in the league' sarcy posts, as if one poor moment overrules everything else.. just football fans, to be honest.

I too am shocked that on a Man Utd forum people take opportunities to slag Liverpool players.

I mean, what the feck is the world coming to?!?
