Viktor Gyökeres - Sporting Striker

Portugal League is League One level (except Sporting, Porto and Benfica). Gyökeres is a good player, but not a top. He is overrated: he is 26 years old and two years ago he played in Championship.

If anything he is underrated because he’s in Portugal. Where he played two years ago isn’t relevant. It’s how he’s playing now.

Put Hojlund on Sporting the last 2 years and he's probably having a similar output as him

Seems like an obvious signing considering how poor Zirkzee and Hojlund are
Hojlund isn't poor though is he. We don't generate chances anywhere near enough for a striker. His goal to shot ratio is very high.

Swap the players and you'd be saying the same.

Braga are generally a decent side. Ranked between Shakhtar and Fenerbahce in the low 40's of the UEFA rankings.

Who is he playing against... This is important. At 24 years old he was a good championship player. Now he plays against league one defenders. Also Darwin Núñez scored a goal every game in Portugal (and he was younger than Gyökeres) and now in PL he is a reserve.

You can’t compare him with other players from that league. For instance, several attempted to compare his goals to Jardel 25 years ago, as if that was somehow relevant in the present. Just watch him play. His finishing quality speaks for itself. He is a killer.

To illustrate that he actually scores goals, which has been our biggest problem under ETH. He’s better than anything we have right now.
I mean do we need that illustration? We can see his goal tally. It’s phenomenal against anything. Feels unnecessary to dig out Hojlund.

League One defenders

Yeah because it’s not like Gyokeres was the best player in the Championship. Oh wait…

We should be steering well clear of this guy. Good player but at 26 he won't be worth what Sporting will demand for him.

And also I'd like our transfer policy to move away from buying the current managers former players.

Yes we do. Otherwise what’s the point of comparing and contrasting a player who we may want to buy with one we already have…. on a United site.

He is less dominant playing for Sweden, and missed great opportunites against Slovakia. Would have him at United if the fee is reasonable. Höjlund cannot play every game. Zirkzee is a completely different player type.

We absolutely don’t and you know that. Just feels all a bit silly and a complete false equivalence.

Hmm well his Championship run saw him average less than 1 in 2 and now he's averaging close to 1 in 1.

I'm not going to comment on the quality of the respective leagues but the data doesn't back up the point you're making.

Gyokeres averaged a goal every 2.5 games in the Championship. Goes to Amorim's system and Portugal and has averaged a goal a game. Sorry but he didn't suddenly become that more prolific at scoring and it not have a lot to do with the league and the system he is playing in. Because then you would have to argue the Championship is a tougher league than the Portuguese league as to why he was worse at scoring in the Championship.

People are so blind

The guy is a monster.
This, he would start and it would be a massive upgrade.
And what with the talk about the age? Most strikers lately have peaked in their early 30's.

Not necessarily blind, just skeptical and rightfully so IMO that’s just human nature given his lack of available data against top quality opposition. People go on about said quality of the opposition, but I don’t recall many other strikers in the Portuguese league having as good back to back seasons. Someone’s gonna take a chance on him, the issue is Portuguese clubs don’t sell for cheap, ever.

Agreed. I suspect several big clubs will be after him next summer, although we would probably have the advantage because of Amorim.

Data …

Use your eyes guys.

I'm sure he looks wonderful and dominant and whatever other superlatives against Estrela Amadora.

I just reckon that if you put Hojlund in a dominant team against Estrela Amadora that he probably would too.

He’ll probably cost a 100 million, and we can’t afford that with our other weaknesses. My bet is Arsenal, maybe Chelsea.

Is this a joke? Checking statistics on Sofascore he's been the by far best player out of everyone in Nation's League and has 4 goals and 3 assists in 4 games.

Yeah they're facing mediocre opposition, but you can only deliver against the teams you get to face...
