Lindelof is shite but we wont get any better backup player who would be willing to sit on the bench.

Another reason I would open to sell. Giving us some cash to get Eriksen replacement. We have enough cover in centre back.
Not if we sell Maguire and Lindelof. It's pretty simple. Sell Maguire, keep Lindelof. Maguire will get more money and Lindelof is better.

Because of the new rule FFP we need to find a way to generate money, I have explained this in the post you replied. This means we will need to look at our squad who we can move on to generate money, Lindelof and Maguire are in the category because they only had 4 league starters each while Martinez and Varane are considered as starting XI players as they have 16 and 13 league starters. Sell one of Maguire/Lindelof will still leave us 4 covers in CB (Varane, Lisandro, Shaw, Maguire). If we sell both, then only makes sense to buy a young CB as understudy for Varane.
The new business model is not to sell useful players.

Martinez and Varane have only formed CB pair in 48% of our PL matches. We need CBs for the other 52% as well.
We are a big club and should compete also in EL and domestic cups.Martinez and Varane have only formed CB pair in 8% of those matches. We need CBs for the other 92%.

You need several CBs. We were already forced to use Casemiro to pair up with Lindelof. Then Lindelof got ill and we had rush back Varane after WC and we had to use Shaw. Sure, it worked but we lost a world class DM and FB in the process, plus risked Varane’s fitness. Varane is also a player where you need to manage his game time and to allow for him to recover and prehab. That’s one reason why Lindelof has played more than Varane since he joined, the other reason is all Varane’s injuries.
There will always be plenty of game time for other CBs. Bad idea to sell those who are useful and a part of the good results this season, when we have a long list of players who don’t contribute.

I don't see why we sell him. He is better than Maguire, while being in smaller wages. He is the main deputy to Varane.

It’s only sensible and proactive business model to start moving on two players like Lindelof and Maguire that sit on the bench going to turn 29 and 30 this year and replace them with a new young centre back as an understudy for long term replacement for Varane in the future. So by the time Varane retires or something, we are not stuck with another old centre back Lindelof or Maguire as we have prepare ourselves with new one by developing them and being mentor by Varane and Martinez.

He doesn't just sit on the bench! He's an important part of our squad. You throw away good squad players at your peril.

He does not understand, the poster keeps using PL appearances to have a narrative that he is a bench player.

Unfortunately, the poster does not recognise that there are 4 competitions.

We are selling to generate money because the new rule of FFP is affecting us right now. It’s just sensible to generate money when there is value before their value is dropped drastically then replace them with a young centre back that doesn’t cost lot but can be developed as future replacement for Varane. Oh God we have been stuck with horrible boards that some people in here don’t know how to move on with players.

So that just tells me we should be searching for our next long lasting first choice CB to sit alongside Martinez.

There are clubs that heavily depend on their first CB pair to play week in week out. We are not that kind of club. Our first CB pairing has not had much impact on this seasons results as I showed you: we have only won 6 games with our first pairing, and 17 games with bench CBs. We are more depending on our bench CB actually, and they have delivered what they should.

It’s good to develop a young CB. It’s a risk of course but good. However you need here and now first, especially since CL qualification and CL success is no1 with regards to economic results and FFP. Bench CBs have played in 67% of all our matches this season, you can’t throw in a young developing CB in those matches and expect good results.

 If the first CB pairing has not had much impact on this season, they wouldn’t started 16 league and 13 league matches while Lindelof and Maguire have only 4 league starters, and ten Hag wouldn’t need to drop Lindelof and Maguire for Luke Shaw as CB vs Man City. The most important thing is get the 3rd spot in the league and EFL Cup right now, and we don’t need 5 covers of CB for that.

Trying to compete in all competitions is just big ask because we don’t have the quality midfield squad depth to compete in all of them, you have to be realistic to think the whole squad not just the CBs. We can have 4 Rio Ferdinand in the team but if we have 3 Djemba Djemba in midfield depth then there is no balance to ask to compete in all.

Getting 3rd in the league is CL qualification and we don’t need to have 5 covers of CB. There are too many. We can start moving on CBs that can‘t even getting minutes over Luke Shaw to generate money, and use some of those money to buy a young one for future. Coincidentally, those CBs are going to turn 29 and 30 years old. We need to start preparing to rebuild the squad.

Are you saying he will stay and become automatic first name on the sheet?
I love how people are confident he'll stay as 3rd choice centre back and not become automatic first name on the team sheet

I don’t know how people can casually just call Lindelof is 3rd CB. A 3rd centre back who got dropped by Luke Shaw. Maguire was the one who started the match vs Charlton in quarter final while Lindelof sat on the bench. Who knows if Maguire didn’t get suspended, may be Maguire would still start over Lindelof in the semi final vs Reading. In reality both Lindelof and Maguire are fighting the 4th spot CB, neither are nailed on for the spot yet.

Man Utd 2:0 Nottingham Forest
We finally got the Lindelof in CM some posters have been asking for for years.

I'd hope he did ok at 2-0 up on the night and 5 up in the tie

No issues with trying him out there; moving players about with some thought to it is something we generally don’t do. Can’t help but think he lacks the athleticism and dynamism for it, but hey ho.

But he said, ‘Lindelof was educated as a 6’, not just, ‘Lindelof was educated’.

So, for your example to be truly analogous, you would have to say, ‘I was educated as a neurosurgeon, but that doesn’t mean I can be a neurosurgeon, Erik’.

That could technically be true if you didn’t get an accredited position or struggled with exams or assessments, but, if not, there would be a reasonable chance Erik would be willing to employ you as a neurosurgeon (provided you didn’t reveal your doubt about your ability to fulfil your obligations).
Fair enough

What I take from this is sure he's an emergency DM option, but more so that Ten Hag likes his decisions on the ball when we're in possession and pushed up with a high line, so he'll stay here for a while and get a new contract as long as he's happy to be 4th CB, fighting with a younger Maguire replacement (he will want to leave this summer) and Shaw for the 3rd CB role.

Love ETH but bringing on Lindelof as a midfielder is just wrong. Like the last game, he looks a fish out of water. Not his fault of course.

Looked lost, added nothing. Strange sub.

Yeah can't really criticise him when he's obviously lost in that position.

Should be the Casemiro backup more than anyone else IMO. He might not being much, but his defensive positioning and reading of the game is far better than the others. We don't need another presser in midfield when Casemiro is gone, we need someone who will just sit and plug gaps.

I’d far rather put Shaw there and stick Malacia at LB

He is well positioned to to win back the ball and other defendive duties but he doesn’t know where to position himself for the build up.
