Excellent game, when he ran foward with the ball it was purposeful and penetrative, not the ambling style of Maguire.

He's not a physical defender, so a bit of a worry against set pieces, but he's a good reader of the game and decent on the ball. Good to see his abilities shine today

Only if you have an agenda against Maguire. If you are looking at the two without bias, then Maguire is better and was better today. I like Lindelof on the ball though. I wouldn't mind seeing how he could do as a DM, but he is not a better defender. Once again, the unbiased stats have Maguire better

What?

Maguire had a decent game today (after a rough start), but anyone who thought he was better than Lindelof needs to get new glasses. Lindelof was probably the best player on the pitch over the 90 minutes. Even looking at your 'unbiased stats', the only thing Maguire did better was score a goal and make one more tackle. Lindelof is even or beats him in pretty much everything else.

My MOTM today, thought he was superb. Considering how good Pogba and Sancho were shows just how good he was.

I thought Lindelof was probably our best performer overall. A couple of good runs, including in the build-up for our 2nd goal. Seemed to cut out quite a few crosses. Read the game well.

I kind of feel bad for him. He’s hardly put a foot wrong this season and has honestly been better than the two guys playing ahead of him. Think he would have thrived in a back three if we’d have appointed Conte.

Whoscored had Phil Jones and James Tomkins ranked as the league’s best CB’s in 2015.

Imagine taking their ratings seriously.

So when the stats don't suit your agenda we ignore them. Got it...

Yet he isn't wrong...

United Offical App says that Lindelof had more:
  • Chances created
  • Higher passing accuracy (84% to 71%)
  • More forward passes
  • More attempted and completed passes into the final third
  • More total possessions won in total, from defense, and from midfield
  • One fewer loss possession than Maguire
  • Maguire won 2 tackles, Lindelof didn't.

Obviously the goal from a set piece is heavily weighted. So from those stats, a very strong point saying Victor had a top match and was arguably better than Maguire.

When you are looking for one to be better than the other you will find it. When you watch without bias and don't have agenda's against our own players you will realize that perhaps Maguire has been playing better than most give him credit for...

Not surprised by that, he has been excellent all season. For me it's a crime that he gets dropped. Should play when fit, one of the very few who has stepped up his game this season.

It is quite funny that you mention watching without bias and agenda's. You have a huge Maguire bias, it is just that you have a very positive bias towards Maguire. Maguire was decent today, Lindelof was better.

I actually don't. I called him out earlier in the season when he was poor. Just like last year, he was rushed back from injury. But he's been good since he's been back. Not great. Not MOTM. But definitely not our biggest problem like most say. Our biggest problem prior to today has been our inability to score. But go on...tell me again how you don't have an agenda but think our defense is better without Maguire. And keep in mind that while Maguire was out during the month of January (a period where most said Lindelof proved he was better) De Gea had to make more saves than any keeper in the league and won player of the month in the EPL. In fact, he had to save us in every game but one. West Ham. That also happened to be the only game Maguire played 90 minutes in January...

agree that he has been our best defender this season
He is the in form defender so should be starting ahiead of Harry and Varane at the moment

71% pass completion is not good at all for a CB. In fact it’s poor. Plus Lindelof seemed to be the one making the more progressive/difficult passes.

I do think Maguire was generally decent but there’s no question which one of them played better.

I'm not looking for anything. I'm more than happy to give Maguire credit when he deserves it, and it is good that his performance levels have improved recently to the point where he's playing decently again. But that's all that it has been - decent. That's what he was again today. He's capable of much better and at his top level he is better than Lindelof, but he hasn't been anywhere near that this season.

Lindelof has been better than Maguire this season as a whole, and he was better in this particular match. Neither statement is even close, and I can't see how anybody who isn't massively biased either against Lindelof or towards Maguire can dispute either of those things.

He was very, very good today. Neither goal was anything to do with him and he created a lot from deep.

I think he'd be respected a lot more if he wasn't a CB in the prem for a team like United. If he was on City he would be a lot less challenged physically IMO. Here he occasionally has those games where he gets bullied but he is actually a very good CB all round. If he played on La Liga he'd be seen as a top CB IMO.

He would have been a fantastic player in the Fergie era I reckon. Dont think he suits the constant threat from oppos, but his play from out back is very good

He was 20/28, while Lindelof was 37/44. Lindelof gained possession of the ball and kept possession of the ball while completing more passes into the final 3rd as a backline defender compared to Maguire.

I'd like to see Lindelof and Varane against the likes of Liverpool and Man City. In the absence of a physical centre forward, I see no reason why they can't be our starting CBs.

The armband keeps Maguire in the team sadly.

Has anyone else noticed that he seems to have put on a lot of muscle recently?

What a run, it was impressive like watching a class winger run through.

So when the stats don't suit your agenda we ignore them. Got it...

Surely you jest? It's really not that hard to read basic statistics such as those provided by sites like WhoScored and understand what they represent well and what falls between the cracks.

I always felt his criticism was bit scapegoating as he is easy target. Playing as only member of back 4 who isnt British will always be scrutinised more in the press. Glad he is shutting people down

Maguire has been utter shit this season, honestly some of the worst CB performances I've ever seen. He was good last season but to suggest that he's been better than Lindelof this campaign is ridiculous.
