Best player from our team tonight. Very happy to see him bullying West Ham players and winning everything. Want more of this, instead of just waving hands and getting bullied by players half his size.

He was properly gassed by the end of that. Couldn't even make it back without a break.

Really good effort from him.

If he plays with Varane he doesn't have to worry about the lack of pace. So he might play a lot better with Varane than with Maguire.

He was a one man defence at times. Especially when we, correctly, threw the kitchen sink at it for it in the last 15 minutes. He turned up at left-back, midfield and was constantly covering Bailly too due to his standard terrible positional play (how many times tonight did Bailly end up wider than Dalot for no reason at all?)

His spring on jumps has got noticeably better again the last 6 months. Maybe the back strain starting to ease?

Great game to remind Varane and Maguire they won't have it easy. He dealt with everything tonight.

Only saw the last 40 but he looked fairly comfortable and played out of pressure quite well.

I'm going to say it though as no one else has, what was that 'defending' for the goal? He had plenty of time to go over and cut out the cross/space but he turned his back on it. It wasn't like it was a last ditch tackle or anything. He has this tendency to just turn his back or tamely come across when trying to block crosses/passes; we've seen this many times.

Like Varane last week, it was poor.

There was a growing pretense that Lindelof wasn't that good with the ball at his feet. You watch a game like that and you have to laugh.

Amazing that you manage to blame the goal on lindelof (although it has come to be expected since media and some supporters have decided beforehand that he has had a bad game). Truth is he had a great game today - based on form he should be starting - and the goal is obviously primarily a midfield mistake. Lanzini has the box to himself.

Amazing you've managed to deduce so much from a single post. The only other two posts on your account basically criticising Maguire. Should I connect the dots and assume you have an agenda?

The point is that Lindelof can be poor in that single incident and still have a good game. Just like Varane against the same opposition last week, which I alluded too.

You have to start somewhere :)
I have an opinion, not an agenda. I believe the posts you are referring to were aimed at the DM and actually not the CBs.
And the goal yesterday was a midfield mistake. Had the CBs covered the area from where the goal came, then they would have left the path to the goal completely free.
No hard feelings from my side, I just don't see how its possible to blame the goal on either of the CB.

In fairness the goal was on DVB, not Lindelof.

I thought he was great last night. Really stood out to me. As many have said looked absolutely knackered at the end as did the whole back line but he was everywhere. Was really impressed.

I wouldn’t even really say it was on VDB, as much his fault as it is Telles’s really. Made a silly choice to go and cover the man Bailly had for whatever reason and left his own man.

Was good yesterday, and deserves a chance to start with Varane give Maguire's form recently. But Maguire seems to be undropable, so who knows

The ball takes a deflection of Lindelof, which I feel puts VDB out of the picture. It was a cluster feck by more than one player.
Having watched it back now, I'd agree it isn't just on Donny, however, I do feel it was a little brainless to try and cover an area that was already so well covered, leaving his man alone in the centre of the box. I don't see Lindelof as being even slightly at fault for the goal though, he blocked the ball and deflection went to an area that should have been covered.

I think instead of putting his hands behind and standing his ground he should have went in and tried to tackle/win the ball, but there is always a risk of committing a penalty, and that's what separates the great CBs from Lindelof imo. Donny made a mistake even though I don't agree that the area was very well protected. The disaster happened way before when the RB bursts through traffic, which is unacceptable.

Hand behind their back is what all the good defenders too (Varane does the exact same thing, as does Dias). Making yourself large in those situations is a recipe for conceding penalties in modern football (see Shaw a few days ago).

He was fantastic against West Ham. With how terrible Maguire has been in the last few matches Lindelöf - Varane should have a go.

'Blame' is not linear and singular. No one can deny Matic and Telles did poorly and DVB was over eager to close the space, which in turned meant he left his man. Likewise, Lindelof was poor in his individual involvement as he was too tame in closing down the player and stuck a very soft leg out. As mentioned, it's something he has many previous with.

Yes it should have been stopped at source and a lot of the blame should go there but that doesn't mean everything after the initial mistake (Matic/Telles) should not be viewed critically too.

The Newcastle goal is a very good example where Shaw and Matic got turned by Almiron, Maguire dived in recklessly high up the pitch, Varane overcommiting on the edge of the box and finally De Gea being stuck on his line and not closing the space. I was one of the few or perhaps only one who commented on Varane's 'rashness' there and I'll say the same of all players when I feel it's worth mentioning or can be arsed.

Lindelof's defending was a bit soft there; it wasn't a situation where he had to dive in or the play was stretched. He just had to face the player, close the space and keep his arms by his side. Instead he turns his back and hold his hands behind his back a whole metre before he's even gone to close the angle. Is he to 'blame' for the goal? No. Is he to 'blame' for his own involvement in that situation where he didn't get good contact on stopping a cross from a dangerous position? Yes.

From what I saw of the rest of the game though, he was very good especially in the last 20-30 mins where it was just him and Bailly at the back.

Man Utd 0:1 Aston Villa
Did ok when coming on
That header our for a corner I don't blame him, he needs some communication as he's running back towards his own goal
A loud shout to leave it would suffice

Genuinely think he needs to be tried at DM. With Fred being this poor, he can't do any worse

You know Lindelof has had a good game when this thread is inactive.
One of the players our fans hate, so yeah. Played very well against West Ham and did well when he came on today. Maguire has had a poor start to the season, so I wouldn't mind seeing how Varane and Lindelof play together.

Agreed. You could argue that Lindelof should have started today, after his and Maguire’s respective performances in their last starts.

Aside from the completely needless corner he gave away, looked pretty good.
I think DDG should be giving him a shout there. When the cross came in, there was a Villa player behind him and Dalot making a run. Villa player stopped his run when he realised Lindelof had it covered but Lindelof couldn't see that. DDG needs to help him there.

Yep. Lindelof glanced around and saw the Villa player moving into that area just before the cross was played. Once the ball was coming in he had no way of knowing the opposition player had stopped the run, so he made the right choice to deal with it. Somebody else had to let him know that it was clear behind him now.

Watching him yesterday, I realized by far and away our best defender on the ball.
He alleviated aspects of Villa's press by playing the ball with calm and precision.

Something our entire team lacks.

Varane is better than him with the ball, but Lindelof is better than Maguire at it.

I personally think he deserves a run in the team while Harry gets his head straight.

Lost the last 3 games he's been involved in. Concerning.

Sure, but he can’t be blamed for yesterday’s loss. Victor is a downgrade from Harry but he wasn’t at fault for the goal, which should have been disallowed, and we had a few very good to chances to score, including the pk.

On some metaphysical level we deserved to lose, but the win was within our reach and Lindelof did his part to keep us in a position to win the game.
