Being quick to react to an attacker receiving the ball at their feet and charging the shot so its difficult. Also Lindelof had time to move out into the middle as Maguire had told him and that didnt happen, so he was further away from the action
But that wasn’t what happened. Maguire doesn’t point at them and they can’t run out till the ball is played which is what Lindelof does. If they assume it’s going there and leave their positions and it’s then popped to Richarlison then we;d be saying that’s ridiculous defending. They do the right thing. The person that has to be covering James is Bruno. No ifs or buts about it.

Maguire again doesn’t tell him to get there. Lindelof tells Maguire to get back in his position as he was in no mans land. Maguire points back at Richarlison probably saying/asking you got him. The only one that can actually see and do anything about James is Bruno.

 The subsequent replies after your post sums up what other people think.

Shaw has plenty of deficiencies and is far from perfect but I gave him that assessment because he has shown top level athletic/physical attributes on top of his reading of the game. Recovery pace, dribbling, touch, 1 vs 1, positioning at the back post, covering, heading, passing etc. Solid 7 to 8 in each catagory (when on form)

Lindelof has an all around consistent quality, I'll give you that but at a 6/10 at most with very little influence on the game other than being a body on the field.

It's almost painful to see you fully acknowledge and understand what it means to be a good player with influence yet be blind in your denial that Lindelof simply does not meet those requirements.

Of course it's good to be calim, of course it's good not to be overly aggressive and be risk adverse. However, you're conflating these aspects with Lindelof's lack of assertiveness as a positive attribute. You're actively giving him massive benefit of the doubt and elevating something that isn't there.

He's not dealing with Messi in the channels, he's not dealing with a peak Barca/City/Liverpool high press so why make it out like 'he has this ability, even if he shows it once a moment every 3 games, so therefore he's a class player'?

Again the problem is that even when he's not a 'disaster' (as if that's a good barometer to jugde a player) he doesn't do enough to influence the game proactively.
As written before, 6.8-7.5 /10 in his last run of PL matches.

Edit; Would be interesting what a hater like you think of him in matches like the clean sheet matches we just had vs Arsenal and Liverpool.

I've given you a subjective opinion based on 10000's of minutes watched and you're giving me a single digit number rating from online publications.

Look at this thread:

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/ima...b-to-partner-with-lindelof-or-maguire.460775/

Of course it's not about who is the better between them two (because even you would admit that is clearly Maguire) but the observations about Lindelof is what you should really be reading about.

The truth is somewhere in the middle and the wide range of opinions basically put down Maguire as not being perfect but easily a much better player and that Lindelof is very middle of the road. A middle of the road player that has his uses but never 'all around high level ability'. That's not a great assessment from Utd's fans, whose opinion hold much more substance than a number.

I’m not even sure what point you’re trying to make. People write things about him in a forum? I showed that more neutral people who have watched the games, have given him high ratings. We can think whatever, but it would be strange if he was a nothing defender, and still get those high ratings. Obviously you should make your own opinion, but when your opinion is so far off his ratings, it should some indication for you that it is just your opinion and doesn’t really reflect the performance.

It would still be interesting what you thought of his recent performances in the clean sheet matches vs Arsenal and Liverpool?

Man Utd 1:0 West Ham
He’s a complete penis. He, Maguire and Fred must make for the most ineffectual passing triangle in history.

Solid game by entire defence, they had zero shots on target. Two nice long balls to Rashford in first half and except for one misplaced pass he was good with the ball. Is always available for a pass and wants the ball.

You dislike him obviously and couldn’t find anything to complain about so you came up with this. Pathetic.

He gave the ball straight to their forward at one point with a mishit pass. Maguire had some shocking passes too

In no man's land after not tracking the runner for their free header and gave away a five yard pass which lead to a counter. You have 200 posts in this thread, over 100 more than anyone else. You've lost any sense of objectivity. He's rubbish.

Maybe take a cool shower and cool down a little? And come back tomorrow?

Really? That's not something you can honestly credit Lindelof for after this game. Almost gave the ball away for a tap in twice in two games and got lucky. That's what he did, he got lucky. Shocking defender and a liability to our team. Maguire is truly twice the defender, picking up after him time and time again. I'm not even a fan of Maguire but he actually makes an effort when defending. Lindelof didn't even notice his man at the last chance they had, he was offside but Lindelof didn't even make out he was there if you can't tell. That's litteral proof of his non existent awareness and I dare anyone to contest me on this. Just look at that situation and tell me he knows what he is doing. Stop it, this is getting ridiculous.

A better team would have scored from there. He’s just a very average player, not at the level of a team with any ambitions. I’m certain he’ll be a priority to replace in the summer.

No matter what Lindelof does at this point, some have made their mind about him and aren't going to change it. He can have a good game and when one mistake happens he'll get slaughtered with the rest of the game getting swept under the carpet. He can't do anything to win some of the fans no matter what.

He's not the best defender in the league. He has his poor moments, but ffs, he's not as bad as people are making him out to be.

. Yes he almost gave away one chance by a mishit pass. Overall he 94.3% of his passes were good, by far highest on the pitch. I lost count of how many passes we missed today but very few of them were from Lindelof.

I applauded him three times in the game. Once when he ran foward with the ball, and once when he read a pass down the lane and cut it way before anyone came close. It was two moments that resembled a decent CB so I applauded him because I'm not biased. However he gave away what should have been two clear cut chances or goals by what is simply non existent defending, in this one game. It's ridiculous that fans such as yourself don't see the bigger picture in my opinion. It seems unbalanced buy Maguire get all the hate because of his price tag while this guy is the real problem in our backline and just doesn't get mentioned in any sentence about us despite being a first team player, just from being low profile. Low profile isn't good enough, we need someone to actually be good back there, especially with Maguire as the partner. Maguire is a top level PL player and with a great partner he could be vital. Lindelof as a defender belongs in La Liga or Italy. Juventus could get away with having him as a sub, not as a mainstay at United.

You act like this isn't a pattern though which is bugging me. He did some nice plays, but he is a liability defensively. What about him not picking up that header? Even in a game like this when the team controlled the match perfectly, in terms of stability and passing, he was the one in question at every moment of insecurity and he always has a one or two of those each game. If we want to be truly dominant, we simply can't live with him. It's ridiculous you can't see this. You have made your mind up about him and refuse to admit we could and should do a lot better. No reason to deflect away from that unless you are a Lindelof fan and not a United fan. I wish Lindelof would be good, but I cant critisize Rashford after this game and not Lindelof. Rashford didn't play well at all but he had an assist while Lindelof seemingly played well and almost took away Rashford's contribution. Our defence is the biggest problem at the moment and this guy just doesn't seem to be able to take that concern seriously and improve. He has the same attitude and energy as De Gea, and if you don't perform with quality you'll fall through no matter what you do, and I love De Gea.

I have no clue what team you support and I don’t really care tbh, but you’re always here to complain about even after good games, there are some classic hating posts from you in this thread, often with some passive aggression. It’s like you’re a little obsessed.

“He almost took away Rashford’s contribution”? Are you kidding me? They had zero shots on target and we had a clean sheet after 120 minutes. Defence did their part for 90+30 and in the end McT stepped up and scored a goal.

Which by sheer luck didn’t end in a goal against. We’re not talking about giving it away in midfield. He continues to make basic errors
Clean sheet and no shots on target, yet you complain. You realise it’s like complaining about a missed opportunity by a forward who scored two goals.

Yes he had one mishit pass.

One pass where he had a lack of composure and gave it straight to the opposition team for a chance to run at him and the goal behind him. Its a big deal not to be doing things like that as a CB. He got away with it this time but next time that could cost us a goal.

They had 2 banks of 5 at the back mate and had no interest in playing , it’s hardly an achievement to be shouting about

Yes it’s not good to mishit a pass like that obviously, even if nothing happened and he took back the ball himself, but in 120 minutes I think we saw basically every player make a mistake or two, or more.

Defence can’t really do more than a clean sheet and no shots on target.

A general and neutral open ended thread by Utd fans, who watch Utd game in game out with opinions by dozens of posters with no agenda is by far, a more informed source of information than 'neutral' single digit ratings.

FYI, I thought he was decent enough against both. Arsenal had one midget attacker and against Liverpool we sat deep and defended as a whole team. Good reactions and reading when it came to cutting out balls but limp any time it came to 1 vs 1 defending. Deserved some praise for not being a liability and putting a shift in. I have no qualms about that.

Against Everton and tonight, where we are expected to play more and be more dominant, he's just another body on the field. People mention about how much Maguire is a liability and he's an old fashioned penalty box defender but I've come to realise that this applies to Lindelof more. He's totally comfortable in the box, sitting deep with protection in front of him and cutting out balls across the box and floor. Very passable and perhaps even solid (in this aspect only) but not in a million years dominant or proactive enough.

Outside the box, just a damp squid.

A majority of those passes went straight back to the player it came from because he would take a step back, take no responsibility, 'offer' a terrible return angle and offload it.

I said it previously, he plays passes like he's in a triangle/rondo but then completely removes himself from the equation and thus giving the receiver the job of actually trying to progress it forward.

@GifLord can you post a clip I think that was around at the end of the 67th minute/beginning of 68th. It was Lindelof 'defending' a player on the channel. Thanks.

I think he's only OK. Not a good enough CB with Maguire next to him to be challenging for titles.

Cheers!

I think this may have been when Lindelof passes it straight to their player. Anyways, I remembered it being worse but it sums up Lindelof quite well 7 secs in.

First he directs AWB to cover the inside pass, then the ball goes out to his man on the wing. Zero engagement, gives him acres of space and then directs AWB to cover the overlap also. He's so comfortable pointing, directing, making sure everyone does their covering that he gives the actual individual threat all the time in the world to create the bloody second phase chance in the first place. So concerned about the overlap he almosts runs away from the ball

He's like Lukaku with the pointing. Pure deflection.

And before anyone picks this up, this is not some 'one tiny clip'/harsh assessment. This is him every game multiple of times. He's not dealing with Messi on the channels.

@GifLord can you please do one from 49th or it was 46th minute where he was marking their forward so tight that their left back or winger passed him the ball and he calmly collected it with his back like he has no pressure on his back whatsoever, he did Ronaldinho touch there, drags Lindelof completely out of his position and even managed to cross it from that side, but luckily they had no players in the box.

Despite his couple of bad mistakes that could have cost us, I felt he was a bit more aggressive and went into duels more decisively, which is strange for him considering how we are used to see him anticipate duels.

Cheers!

Dear lord
Hilarious stuff. You bring up a clip where Lindelof does just fine, then twist it to suit your agenda. Now his fault is that he is pointing to much?

He has a solid game, got 7/10 in the 2 newspapers I read, another clean sheet (4th clean sheet in six matches) and all you and your toxic colleagues do is to get in to this thread and complain and want to see replays of a situation when there was almost a chance.

We had very difficult to create chances, now that’s also Lindelof’s fault. Actually he was the closest to score with his header that hit the post. We had 68% possession, but the attacking players didn’t create much. That’s hardly on the CB.

It’s insane. It’s a small but loud group who is trying to change peoples memories from the matches by pointing out small mistakes. In this match I guess this was all they could dig out. Classic gas lightening

Like i said it was lucky that we didn’t concede first.
can’t wait for this lump of averageness to be upgraded

@GifLord one that made me laugh was lindelof jumping for a header and missing it because he jumped under it. Can you gif it please?
It was first half I think and happened near the halfway line. I don’t know what minute I’m afraid

At the same time you're arguing that AWB trying to lob his own goalkeeper with his clearance is just a misskick that sometimes happens. Couldn't be more blinkered if you tried.

If we you ever needed an example of the sure ridiculousness of the criticism this lad gets, then this is it. It truly is incredible that someone is complaining how he defended here.

Did he really say that?

He was pushed and we were awarded a freekick for it.
