I wouldn't say that he or anyone from our backline (keeper aside, obviously) were magnificent. De Gea had to make 11 saves, ffs.
Overall he seems much better now and keeps improving though, credit where it's due.

Thought he was class today, just need to find a permanent partner for him now!
I agree here. I would go with Bailly for now, personally, but we certainly need a couple of top signings at the heart of defence. It's the position which has been our downfall for a long time now.

Have Lindelof and Bailly plus two good signings and we have ourselves good options. I just don't see why Jones and Smalling (plus Rojo) remain at a top club. They can have decent careers but are not highest level. Just my opinion.

He’s cemented himself as our best CB now imo. And a lot of room to grow. Played well again today.

He's been awesome. Growing in confidence and getting more aggressive as he goes on. So happy for him.

Am I the only one who thought that Alli and Kane got far too many opportunities, mostly because of Jones but they got the better of Lindelof too many times too?

I think our midfield gave Eriksen too much time on the ball. If you give him time on the ball he will create for players like Kane, Son and Alli. Not much Lindeløf could do about that. Overall I think he was very good in though conditions.

A complete transformation. He barely looked like a footballer last season and now playing on the right under Ole has turned him into an excellent defender, our best. Won a lot of headers too today. Didn't think he had this in him. I had written him off. Has made me eat a crow.

That's how centre back partnerships are supposed to work. Now we need to find a partner for him who isn't an absolute liability in some area of their game.
Why does it always have to be his partner? Because he can't be trusted to do so I guess.

Decent performance but let’s not get carried away. De Gea rescued him several times today.

For me he was neck and neck with Pogba for our outfield MOTM, had to mop up after Jones and Young more than once with the way they let Spurs forwards run off them.

Pleased for him, it’s the extremes of the Caf though. Appalling to great. He’s very much in the middle. We still conceded far too many chances today to spurs. He’s improving, which is great to see, but let’s not get carried away.

So happy for him, he times his interceptions so well and I love his new found bravery.
Get a Koulibaly and a Meunier next to him and we have a very good defence.

Because that's not his game. He does the sweeping up, controls the play and moves the ball back out. Just like Rio used to. Vidic was the blood and thunder who loved to fight the striker all game. You need one of each and very, very few defenders have both. I cant think of any current players.

I never really rated him, but he was fantastic lately. Glad to admit that I was wrong.

Smalling is by far our best defender

Lindelof has made progress yes but let’s not get carried away. Him and Jones are coughing up chances. Still weak in the air.

I think we need 1 world class cb and possibly a 2nd one if we want to get back to winning leagues

Smalling - Lindelof for the rest of the season when Mike is back.

Whoever suggests Bailly as first choice hasn't seen him play I think.
I have seen Bailly play many times: he was superb until his long term injury. He is a better player than Smalling and Jones, IMHO. I would keep Bailly, offload Smalling and Jones and look to bring in two top class centre backs. How many chances have Smalling and Jones been given, only to prove they are but a moment away from a mistake? Enough of their mediocrity, Manchester United demands top quality in every position.

For me it's Lindelof, Bailly and two new signings, then, I think we could then solve our defensive weaknesses. If not, clear out Bailly as well and continue the improvement, but it's perfectly clear we are muddling through at centre back, when we should be spoilt for choice. Big changes are needed in this position if we are to challenge for the title.

I like him and he was good but I don't get the praise here for today's game. Spurs attack got the better of him plenty of times (which is normal I think) and De Gea kept us in the game.

Good performance but wasn't something out of this world I thought. Love the player overall though.

If you have to defend and defend and defend with no midfield resistance then any cb will give shots away.. I find it weird when fans blame defence for it when it's the midfield who is responsible for inviting pressure after pressure after pressure.

He’s the only defender I see having a long term future out of the back 4 we fielded today. Shaw was better today but I still feel that he lacks the athleticism and attacking thrust to be a first team regular for years to come.

Lindelof
Smalling
----------------- the cutoff line between good and shit
Jones
Rojo
Bailly

tbh I changed my mind on the ordering of the bottom 3 about 4 times while writing this post. It doesn't matter - they're all shit.

Good player. Could do with a really specific strength and conditioning program (I’m sure he’s already got one tbf) because he just lacks a little bit of physicality

Bailly's long term injury has been a while now. He's never convinced when he got a chance. He's a headless chicken. I find it funny you say that they are but a moment away from a mistake. I have that feeling about Bailly everytime he plays.

And you do know we need English players right?

Has come back from his earlier bad spell at Utd. Looks a tidy player. If you would assume as a football club we need 4 CB's then Lindelof and Smalling take up two of those spots. I still think we need to sign 2 CB's and release Jones and Rojo. Bailly I just dont know. Hit and miss.

Gotta give him his dues, he was great today and has been good in general since Ole came in.

If he had a Koulibaly alongside him, we'd have a rock solid CB situation. Smalling and Bailly as backups, sell Jones and Rojo.

I couldn't disagree more with the sentence in bold. Smalling is easily knocked off the ball, far too prone to errors and terrible on the ball. A mid table side is his level, let's be honest, and he is never in the class of Ferdinand, Vidic, Pallister, McGrath, Buchan and others. He's a decent pro, nothing more, and certainly not United class. We deserve better than Smalling, Jones and Rojo, and require a total re-build of the central defence.

We are a top central defence away from being a very good side. Fully agree with your last sentence about the need to sort it.

Bailly was very good for the first two or three months when he first joined us. Since then he's been all over the place and has never put a serious run of good form together. He'll play well for a few games, maybe a month at most, and then he'll go through a period where he's playing terribly and he gets dropped. It's happened three or four times now. He's more inconsistent and mistake-prone than Jones.

You seem to be making the same mistake some others make - talking about Smalling and Jones as if they were at a similar level. Particularly in your comment about being a moment away from a mistake. Smalling makes far less mistakes than any other defender we have. He's not perfect, but his average is far better than anyone else, and his best is also better than anyone else (nobody else has come remotely close to as good as Smalling played in 15/16).

Jones is shocking, he let Kane roam freely on set pieces at least on three separate occasions. The difference between Lindelof and Jones is night and day. Would love to see how Lindelof would get on with a competent partner.

He has been solid this last few games, but also under Jose for most of this season he’s been solid.

Really turning out to be a good buy.

Loved watching him celebrate saves and clearances like a goal. I’ve missed that kind of passion at our club.

.....and today's thoughts???
Aerially rubbish as usual, we rode our luck in the second half and were lucky we didn't concede at least 3 or 4 goals. Lucky we have a great goalkeeper which ultimately won us the game.

Loving him.

He did this quite a lot of times today. Great to see a player playing with heart.

Was immense today. Really hope he can carry this to the next level. I'd like to see him try and be more adventurous against the lesser sides.

It's was an absolute onslaught at times. Eriksen and co were given time and acres of space to control the ball and pass it within 20 yards of our goal. There's no defender in the world who isn't going to concede chances when that happens. Lindelof did spectacularly well to keep those chances to a minimum. This is why it's so important for us to bring in a player who can protect out centrebacks better than Matic, someone with mobility.
Not sure Matic is the problem. I think under Jose we were a very unfit team. Ole is gradually changing this. We ran out of steam after 70 minutes. We need to play as we did in the first half for a full 90 minutes

He was good but for a Cb his aerial presence is still poor.

Leaves lot on the other Cb in that department. Even at set pieces at to attack the long balls and crosses.
