I have no doubt I'll be at OT for his home debut (against Burton)

A £30m defender who can't get past Phil Jones is a concern to me. Hopefully he'll get a game soon and show why we signed him.
How do you think Jones has performed so far? How do you think his partnership with Bailly looks?

Mourinho always wants his teams to start the season on fire so rarely rotates when there are 7 days until the next game. Lindelöf will need time to adjust and patience from our fans. Mourinho said Lindelöf and Smalling will play against Basel so there's that.

Didn't take the advice from Mhiki - will probably need to stay in the freeze box for another month before he gets his next chance to show Mourinho he's submissive. There's no point trying to fight it, just look at what happened to Schweinsteiger. I feel sorry for your miserable soul.

What a lot of shite you talk.

We are absolutely stocked at CB and we signed this guy for some reason. Unless 3 or 4 defenders are out at the same time, we don't have space for him on the bench =/

Lindelof and Smalling will play in both the Burton and Basel games, I reckon - so we'll be seeing him starting twice in fairly quick succession soon enough.

Those are two nice, easy introductions and if he looks dreadful in those games we should worry a bit.

I think it is a good thing that he can be given time to settle in the squad and new life, instead of just being thrust into action.

He may start the CL game, will have to wait and see, but I am confident that he will start against Burton.

We usually have 3-4 defenders out at the same time though...

Have you seen how well Jones and Bailly are playing?

Have you seen how far behind Lindelof was in the games he played for us?

Why on god's earth would Mourinho be throwing him into the deep end now?

Seriously, I'd love to see you come up with a logical answer.

As for "going after him", he's played badly and Mourinho protected him by saying he'll need a bit of time to bed in but the quality is there. You really do talk a load of shit.

I am not surprised we have seen very little of him, I am surprised we signed him in the first place.

If there was one position we were well stocked in it was CB. If we were going to make a signing at CB you would have thought only a true world class ready-made top player would make sense

slight correction as we were well stocked with constantly crocked centre backs - it made sense to buy him given his potential and that Mourinho is famed for building solid defences.

Not happening

We 100% needed a CB, we were a Bailly injury away from having a real problem in that position last season at the business end of things

What we probably needed though was a Bonucci however no one will be complaining if Lindelof turns out as good as Bailly

Victor's certainly not 'hit the ground running', at times the 'game seems to pass him bye' (as have many opponents). Presumably Jose has seen something, somewhere, about Victor to give him confidence the lad 'can make it' ... eventually!

(Sorry, about the cliché's its hard to avoid them.)

We saw he's not quite up to speed in pre season, it would have been stupid to throw him into the PL straight away. The press would be instantly on his back and it would make it so much harder. Leave it to the experienced players and let him get acclimatised to the club/English football in cup games for a few months. His issues in pre season looked more mental than anything. He looked nervous and wasn't keeping up with the games.

I also think Mourinho bought him with a back 3 in mind, a plan that's been shelved following our failure to bring in Perisic/a wing back.

We needed a top CB, we don't need a 'project' or another decent PL CB. If Lindelof turns out to be as good as Bailly then great, but he clearly is nowhere near that level at the moment and tbf I saw plenty of posters on here who had seen Lindelof play and where a little sceptical.

I would class our CBs as follows - Bailly (top class) Jones and Rojo (very good PL CBs) Smalling (good PL CB) Blind (capable) Tuanzabe & TFM (both ahead of Lindelof!)

No we don't. It happens once every 2-3 seasons for about 1 month. People are hugely exaggerating.

And when that happens, I'd rather fall back on Tuanzebe or Blind at CB. You don't spend £30-40m for a player that doesn't even make the squad unless the team is decimated.

For some reason, he seems like a player that will struggle with lesser games and turn up in bigger ones. Just going by what I've seen with Sweden. Maybe a concentration issue? Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I think he will come good because Mourinho has almost 100% success rate in signing CB.

Also, DeGea's first few months here were full of school boy errors and he was also very nervous especially when handling high balls/corners. At that moment, I never thought he can become one of the best in the world playing for us. Hope Lindelof will be the same and will be given time to develop.

He was baught for the first team, Jose clearly sees him as a regular when ready.

We are lucky we can call upon the likes of Jones/Smalling Blind while he adjusts.

Looking forward to seeing what he can offer, people are writing him off before he's begun. Smalling/Jones/Blind/Rojo have been adequate over the last few seasons, we cant go out and sign an established world class CB (or so it seems), so we've done what everyone on here says we should - buy the best young emerging talent. Cant please some people

Phil Jones will get injured, Rojo is out for a while. It only takes Bailly or Smalling to be suspended or injured for us to be short. Lindelof will probably come good for us and be first choice, he's just settling in.

Our friend Victor brought the form from the preseason back with him to the national team tonight. He received a match rating of 1 where max is 5 from the biggest Swedish newspaper. Admittedly 6 other Swedish players got ones as well but....

I still can't take that transfer seriously. I am usually highly otimistic about new signings, but I still can't figure out why we signed that guy. He is not bad - he is just...a decent all-round defender. And that is it!

I hope you are delivering to your username. If not, looks like it's going to take a bit of time with this guy.

It will obviously take time, he looked bang average in pre season. Yes pre season, but our youngsters looked better than him. Never understood why we didn't go for Keane or Maguire at cheaper prices than the fancy Swede in Portugal, but time will tell. Since being a United player, he has been terrible

I doubt Mourinho saw him as the fancy swede in Portugal. Maguire is flavour of the month but wasn't the answer.

I really wanted Keane but this board was unanimously against that. Time will tell with Victor.

Aye, feels in someway like buying a young Johnny Evans so far.

Time will tell, think he'll prove to be decent back to Jones, Rojo and Bailly.

How about simply exercising some patience with Lindelof? He hasn't stepped in and cemented a starting spot, but he's a young defender at the very beginning of a transition to a much more difficult league. He seems to have some good attributes. With the form of Jones and Bailly, and the option of bringing in Smalling, we're not desperate for him to play now. Give the kid some time and support. Jose has a good eye for defenders. It's far, far too soon to write Lindelof off.

Jose was due a dud
Yeah cause he's already played enough competitive games for us to reach this verdict, right?

The need for instant gratification is ridiculous. Let's not forget Vidic and Evra's early days. SAF exercised patience with them and look what they became. Jose is doing the same here. Just like he did with Mikhi.

We are going to need to be patient. I think the fee and how quickly Bailly settled may have dramatically raised expectations for Lindelof. Let's see how he does in his first batch of competitive games for us. I trust Jose's judgement. Jones's play has really eased the need to rush him in, and Rojo should be back in Jan. His distribution skills will really help us in games we dominate possession.
