Nah we signed him cause he has a higher ceiling than Smalling and Jones. He will be top class for us and will displace those two. Mourinho knows a good defender.

Totally agree, if Jose knows anything it's signing a good defender. He will cone good with time, I'm glad he never started yesterday and i hope he doesn't start till the league cup games. That way he should bed in easier.

Well unless Lindelöf somehow tuns into an exceptional player that could greatly improve our play, I would always root for Jones/Rojo to become the other first-choice CB for us (not that my personal feelings has any effects on Jose's choice anw). It irks me that the age gap between Lindelöf and Jones is only 2 years, so assuming that Bailly is guaranteed a place, only one can make the step up in long terms and I hope it will be Jones.

Jones won't make a 'steup up in long terms' because he'll be injured sooner or later like he always is.

Sorry, but that's entirely your interpretation of events.

After the Swansea game Mourinho patently didn't give a feck about the league and played weakened teams while saving players for the EL. Which obviously forced the team back against strong opposition away from home.

On top of that Mourinho set the team up very defensively in games against the the rest of the top 6 even before our injury crisis. It's a mode that he's reverted to many times in his career and there's little indication that it's correlated to the CB injury crisis.

That has been the case even in the last Europe League games. In the last months of the season we sacrificed our attack to support the defense by the drawing the midfield nearer to the defense line.

That's not the main point, though. We ended the season with only 3 senior defenders available (Bailly, Smalling and Jones). You can't simply enter a season with 3 defenders only and putting your hopes on Blind and some inexperienced youngsters to cover when these got injured, which is very likely considering the great injury record of Jones.

If you're happy with entering the season having only 3 senior defenders it's up to you again, but that's not ideal for any team wanting to challenge for anything in a long season.

I told you so…:p Let's see if he can get a grip before Rojo gets back, cause otherwise he might never. This is all a bit strange, because we are indeed needing a ball playing centerback. Did anyone noticed how much Jones was taking the ball out of defense?

He obviously isn't ready for the PL. The fact that he didn't even make the squad on Sunday proves this. The fans will have to be patient with him. The good thing is that we are very solid at the back so it's not difficult to ease him in slowly. We might not even see him until November, December if the manager thinks he isn't ready. That's what happened with Miki and we might see it again with Lindelof. IMO he should start the league cup games and the PL games before or after the midweek CL games to help rest other players like Bailly and Jones.

Jose said it himself carvalho was shite for the first few months then he became the great player he is. He said he believes Lindelof just needs time and just like Carvalho he'll be great - his words not mine.

@StephenH

Heard you on BBC Manchester Red Wednesday before giving a whithering assessment on this lad! I think you upset the presenter a bit.

What he say?

Only saying what I've seen and what I've seen was Lindelof wasn't good 1v1 and positionally when playing for Benfica. I made a point to watch him after he was linked.

So those saying take time and look at Vidic or saying we didn't know what Bailly was like before came aren't looking at reality. What does he need to settle into? His performances are commensurate with what he did as a settled Benfica player.

On the flip side, he is EXCELLENT on the ball. He can also adapt his game. Jose has also scouted this guy for a while, so there is a possibility he sees something that he wants to utilise that we haven't yet.

Guys....

Not saying he's not good enough, never going to be good enough, etc.

If JM has signed him, he obviously isn't a duffer....

But just pointing out that when we did sign him, at the time -

It semed ineveitable that DDG was heading for Madrid.....We needed good / reliable cover ( still do ) for Tony V at RB....Until Shaw finally convinces the doubters, our LB position is a revolving door with Shaw / Blind / Darmian / even Young....The whole world and his dog knew we were desperate for a midfielder to replace Carrick - although perhaps the Matic deal was already set up and we all knew bugger all about it....We still don't have any out-and-out wingers, just converted midfielders / 10s / strikers....And we'd already lost Ibrahimovic until at least 2018 even if he resigns and Rooney was already half way to Goodison.

So paying £30 million for yet another central defender as the first signing of the summer given that we had / have the seven I mentioned ( OK - Rojo will be out till 2018, probably ) just seems totally weird, and I wonder if we had to sign him only because we were 'locked into the deal' because we were chasing him during last season's CD injury crisis.

You didn't need a GK, you signed a £75m striker and a £40m starting midfielder from the PL champs so half of those positions got fixed... why are you moaning purely about the timing and the fact that Lindelof was the first signing? Who cares?

Also scouting a player doesn't mean you have to sign him and are 'locked in to the deal' you know.

Like I said - just seemed strange when there were more obvious needs which most of us on here have been discussing for years, particularly midfield and wingers.

As for ' scouting ' him - no, it was much more than that at the time. I'm sure we would have signed him in January if Benfica would have agreed to it, and probably we ' agreed ' to wait until summer to give them chance to find a replacement. Meanwhile, Rojo was almost our POTY after he moved back to CD and I still reckon that Rojo and Bailly will be our best CD partnership for the next few seasons.

But as we all agree - it's far, far too early to judge whether Lindelof is as good as the fee we've paid....Fingers crossed.

Although ideally people would have wanted a leftback signed. A top class fullback would give us so much more and the same with a top class winger. Hopefully though the likes of Martial will step up this season. I think Linderlöf will come good, but I still don't think it was a good signing. Sure better him than no player signed, but I rather got a 30 million fullback.

He cost over 30 million and can play fullback.

No idea when this guy "should" start. He's still the 4th best healthy CB.

Jones has been good. Bailly has been GREAT in 2 games. Smalling was the best CB in the preseason.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jose bought Lindelof as a favor to Ibra.

Decent depth though. Smalling and Jones won't stay healthy.

Not even on the bench. This was a favor signing for Ibra.

Davinson Sanchez (AJAX player that was shutting down Rashford) would have been a better signing.

He was a very highly rated CB before he came to us, just because he's Swedish doesn't automatically make him a "favour signing".

Mourinho said he watched him every week as he was watching the Portuguese league so he must have been impressed. He didn't look at the right level during pre-season so I'm glad we're not forcing him on. It's going to take him some time and hopefully, he'll come good.

1. No it wasn't
2. He will get his chance soon enough. You dont know what plan Mourinho has for him. Perhaps he was a signing for when we play 3 at the back.

What utter tosh.

Don't be daft.

He's a long term player not a quick fix. Just like with Mhiki last season he will get game time and eventually play. It doesn't have to be now it could be October before we see him.

I don't think Victor was signed to become automatic first 11, considering United now have Bailly who performed really well in his first season, Jones and Rojo rejuvenated, and Smalling, well, being Smalling. Not to mention Tuanzebe and at a stretch, TFM.

Victor, like Miki last year, probably undergoing some intensive training regime to get him ready for the big time. Plus, it would not be wise to risk his inclusion anyway considering that Bailly and Jones are doing so well at the moment. There's no "easy" games in EPL nowadays. Just ask Guardiola. I think he should be ready in time during Christmas hectic schedules.

a favor signing to Ibra is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've heard. This whole forum is stupider for having to read that post.

We have league cup and champions league soon. Jose doesn't play youngsters in league cup.

A £30m defender who can't get past Phil Jones is a concern to me. Hopefully he'll get a game soon and show why we signed him.

It's a good thing that we have a manager that doesn't just throw a new signing in just to prove he is completely correct in signing him.

I wrote ages ago and even now I Still don't know why we signed him

What a waste of £40 million it could've been better used elsewhere.
