VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Dermot Gallagher claims it’s because the linesman man handles Bruno first.
In another light that lineman gets in trouble
Bruno was incredibly petulant there and could easily have seen retrospective action, but he was being held back by the linesman so that TAA had a free throw to chuck the ball at his groin and the lino just ignored it.

You watch them now do a u-turn and ban Bruno. The bit about “world class official” made me chuckle. Oh, and anyone care to guess who this bloke supports?

The lino was on the pitch for no reason at all and blocking Bruno’s path to the ball. He put his hand on his back as he tried to get past him.

How fecking precious and arrogant are these people?

Even Dermot Gallagher was on SSN this morning saying the official was the one in the wrong.

Completely unrelated story, but here's his accent:

Feck off, dipper.

Some random support group recommending punishments now? Did that referee support group recommend any punishments for Joe Hart headbutting (I'll call it that if we're calling Bruno's a push) Michael Oliver all those years ago?

So after all the moaning on here after the ref correctly added a minute onto the stoppage time from which we scored in and all the conspiracies on here that they want us to win the league it turns out Bournemouth's first goal shouldn't even have counted.

Also thinking Nunez should've been sent off for that, I had a tenner on him to be carded and a few quid on him getting sent off and even I can see that was a nothing incident.

Not a fan of Bruno due to his endless whining to the ref. Should get booked for it pretty much every match.

Not much in the push though, you can barely describe it as a push at all.

Refs did ok last weekend seemingly. Handball is still confusing. The overriding principal is that only deliberate handball is an offense.

All the guidance is just to stop players accidentally on purpose making themselves bigger, to get away with it.

Let me guess, for the full house you think Bruno should get an 11 game ban?

Where the actual feck are all these Arsenal fans coming from?

No, I don't, even if the official hadn't put his hands on him first I don't think what Bruno did was anything bad to be honest.

Nice try though and a strange reaction to me not thinking Nunez did anything worthy of getting in trouble.

Absolute fecking farce in Chelsea vs Dortmund. Penalty given for completely accidental handball after VAR review. Havertz duly misses it but gets a second chance for encroachment. Despite multiple Chelsea players entering the box before anyone from Dortmund. The system is flawed beyond belief.

Some people genuinely argue that VAR in Europe is somehow better. I have no idea how that original ref decision could be overturned in the first place.

If you encroach, you can't touch the ball first. Why is this a controversial interpretation of the rule?

Whatever about the decision to award the penalty itself, the retake is fine.

I checked the rules. I was wrong. But so are you. Whoever touches the ball is irrelevant. If a penalty is missed and both teams encroach then it has to be retaken.

Should never have been a penalty though.

Every penalty would be retaken a million times! It seems a perfectly sensible interpretation to penalize those who have gained an advantage in touching the ball first having encroached.

Agree to disagree re: whether it was a penalty. For me it's not a stonewall pen but it's also not some sort of disgrace.

Sensible or not. It’s not in the laws of the game. The team that touches the ball next is an irrelevance when it comes to encroachment.

Fair enough! If you wanted to argue that that distinction be codified, I certainly wouldn't argue with you. Appreciate you looking up the actual laws though - and thanks for explaining clearly what they do and don't contain (I am too stressed watching the game to have an informed opinion).

 Fair enough. You can have a read of the rules here when you’re a bit less distracted. There’s a handy encroachment outcome table for the easily confused like me.

Thank you for sharing (and for your patience)! Dumbfeck question here - are those the laws that govern football in England only or is that universal across Europe?

If VAR is going to intervene for encroachment, must always do in every match the same way.

It was never a penalty in the first place surely?
Arm in a completely natural position and was not even looking at the ball.
I wanted Chelsea to go through by the way so no bias from me just seemed incredibly soft.
The incoachment decision seemed spot on to me

Just to document this, when Peter Walton thought VAR check was over he claimed the correct non penalty decision was made. VAR then does check it only for Peter to claim the correct decision is a penalty after all when the ref is called over to the monitor.
This man gets paid a wage for this

I actually agree with the penalty. Leaves his arm sticking out in that situation, it's his fault. Mind, i disagree that those types of handball should be penalties, but some genius decided to only leave indirect free kick in the box for keeper handling a back pass.... :wenger:

The retake, given the rule as explained in the tweet above, was a mistake though. Pretty damn big one too, i mean how the feck did the VAR think Ozcan impacted any chelsea player there...

Nonsense to not give handball. All the outlines should only be there for unintentional handball. This is intentionally using your arm to control it! Mad that it wasn't given

I missed the game because of a concert but just caught the goals and this. How was this not called off insane. He clearly would not have controlled the ball if not for his hand

He keeps his hand out in an unnatural position and leans into it as it rolls down his arm.
Ridiculous

On reddit this has around 250 upvotes, if it was the other way around and it was Bruno, it would have been at least 10x

Unnatural or not doesnt matter when it's in attack right? It's always handball so this should be ruled out regardless of arm position. Or did they change it yet again?

only if it’s the goal scorer. If it’s in the build up they’ll let it go
