VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Ball hits his hand. He moved his hand towards himself which happens to also be towards the path of the ball. This case it not a case where imo you can say its clearly not a pen.

Likewise if it wasn’t given I don’t think VAR can give it.

Thereby making his body smaller and putting his arm back into a natural position. Movement started before the strike of the ball also which eliminates it being deliberate.

It's an erroneous handball decision, against the current IFAB rules and substantially beyond the current VAR test for an intervention (clear and obvious error).

Awful officiating.

It was the non pen against wolves and the media outrage after it. Yes that was the start of the season and yes it's still going on.

Yes but that's been going on for years. Post Ferguson really, it's been like a non United fan catharsis and revenge mission

Get rid of “clear and obvious”. It is an utter farce and completely removes any consistency in decision making, which is what VAR should provide.

Very harsh decision on AWB today. Moves his arm into his body specifically to try and make himself as small as possible and still has a penalty given against him. Even with the nonsense of “clear and obvious”, that should have been overturned.

We have got to the stage where the same decision can have two different outcomes depending on the on field decision. It’s just complete madness

Yep, I’d say the fact that he’s moving his arm towards his body before the cross comes in actually makes it quite a cut and dry decision - shouldn’t be a penalty and thus an obvious error. I can’t see any other interpretation based on the current rules - even moreso when you see the actual ones not given recently. Mind boggling.

Forest are being punished for not taking the ref's shit. PGMOL have less openness and accountability that governments, for feck sake. They are absolutely untouchable.

It's never a pen on AWB, he's clearly bringing his arm in. VAR allowing referees to dictate the drama on the pitch.

It's just awful and the application of is the worst way it could have been implemented and it should be removed from the game entirely.

No one saying this, but that Coventry goal should have stood (and we would have has no complaints losing that game 4-3). If that same call had gone against a United equalizer we would all have been livid.

Time for someone to actually make it so that you judge a player on or offside by where the feet are (not random body parts)... it sounds so simple, but it would fix 99% of the bogus offside calls.

Felt like plucky Cov got the decision not anything else, especially after the Grealish starjump yesterday.

You can bet your bottom dollar we aren't getting a pen with the same situation against Coventry while being 3-2 down in the last few minutes.

Grealish yesterday no penalty - when he moved his hand towards the ball
AWB today penalty - when he moved his hand towards his body.

The thinking behind all this from VAR and refs is as follows:

''Oh what a game, and Coventry deserve the draw, and let's make this game more interesting and maybe go to penalties - OH, and it's Manchester United so give the bloody penalty and to hell with them!''

The 3 non-penalty decisions:

I think the handball would be a bit harsh, he's pretty close and can't really react. The challenges though, he's very very "lucky" to escape both.

Young for all 3  He must've been thinking "How the feck..." when the 3rd one wasn't given.

WTF?!
As bad as United were, offside is offside fekkin WUM ABU

I've got various (probably controversial) opinions.

  1. I think the AWB handball was the correct decision. He's far enough away. I thought our handball given vs I think Brentford was correct too.
  2. Similarly, there was a handball from a corner that VAR looked at that was a clear and obvious error, and should have been given to us??? Dixon had a moan but it clearly came off the Coventry players arm.
  3. The offside is bullshit and harsh, but the lines are the lines. I'd be furious if it was disallowed for ourselves, but I'm pretty sure we had CL goals chalked off for similar, and I think one vs Arsenal early in the season too that infuriated me. I think when it's that close they should side with the attacker, but it's benefitted us today. I suppose they do literally draw the line somewhere and even if it's an inch offside, the reason they are so stringent is that if they allow an inch, then eventually people will argue for 2 inches etc etc and then the lines gone somewhere else.

This weekend is the perfect example of why VAR isn't fit for purpose and how it's not doing what it's supposed to be doing. Two handball decisions, watched by a referee with a monitor, where one is clearly more blatant than the other, yet the less blatant one ends up being a penalty and the blatant one ends up being a goal kick.

Just get the right decision for feck's sake and stop this clear and obvious nonsense.

Hope they have both the City and Utd handballs on ref watch tomorrow, I wanna see what lengths Dermott goes to to justify both decisions

Dixon has basically been a Coventry fan
He did say it was a bad decision, and I have to say he also made the best commebt I've heard in ages, one time when Wright I thunk it was just ran past Casemiro Dixon said " Casemiro's pulling a caravan"

Sorry that's bollocks, in real time it looked offside, close but off, and the commentary said as such when the first replay came up

Why would a goal that was proven to be offside stand?

They have to get some proper rules on this handball business and apply it to the rules.

I never like to see a pen given when a ball is smacked at a player from a yard or 2 away, especially when they're jumping and arms and hands do move.

Let's be honest guys, England probably has the best football league and worst referees. VAR as a technology is not bad at all and should be there to be used. But the people actually using it and making the decisions are the worst.
Not sure why there wasn't official complain from United yet, this season there were soooo many decision against us. Klopp is complaining all the time, we get far worse treatment and EHT doesn't say anything. Next time we have to push back and point fingers at the officials.

The Coventry goal was offside. You could see it without lines. In fact the lines made it look tight when it was clear. Half his body was ahead of AWB.

Listening to Gary Neville's comments about Mark Clattenberg I think he is right, Forest have put him in a really bad position with their tweets today, he would be right to resign and walk away.

Refs will defend themselves by claiming they awarded United 5 penalties in the semi final.

Or he’s advised them?

He was at the game so you have to assume he was aware of the tweet. Though I don’t agree with the original official NFFC tweet it has garnered a lot of attention and a lot of support from fans of other clubs so maybe pulling the pin on this particular hand grenade was not so mad a call.

I dont for a second believe that he would have endorsed Forest putting out a tweet that basically accused the officials of being bias especially when some of those officials are his friends.
That’s completely unrealistic. Clattenberg doesn’t have any friends.
