Not that I’m advocating that Liverpool should have had a penalty but the Ipswich goalkeeper cleaned out a Liverpool player after he’d taken a shot just as Onana did against Wolves last season. Today’s will never be mentioned again. Onana’s was referred back to the whole of last season.
Surely if the tech isn't working you either wait till it is, or don't use itBBC…. “Hang on, just on that Everton no-penalty...
In turns out there was a technical issue with the VAR screen so referee Simon Hooper wasn't able to see any replays. He overturned his decision on VAR's advice.”

Howard Webb… (1) there will be no retrospective refereeing and (2) the on pitch official will ALWAYS make the final decisionSurely if the tech isn't working you either wait till it is, or don't use it
Surely that shouldn't be a penalty for West Ham. Cash plays the ball
They’ve done the opposite of what fans want. They’ve done exactly what referees want. They've raised the bar for overruling the ref even higher so we'll get more bad and/or inconsistent decisions.
They're actively sabotaging VAR
Exactly. Nobody cares about “rerefereeing” and “overruling the on field referee” apart from on field referees and who gives a feck what they want.Don’t really get the point of VAR if they aren’t there to make the “right” decisions. If you not going to overrule the ref just use them for offsides and get on with it. So pathetic they have the tech to improve decisions yet they don’t but using a bizarre “not going to overrule the ref” rule.
I'm watching this too, and on the VAR replay he clearly gets a nick on the ball before touching the other player, who throws himself down in any case. How in feck is that a penalty? Looks like these refs are determined to be the center of attention for yet another season.Surely that shouldn't be a penalty for West Ham. Cash plays the ball
So why do they ask the refs to go to the monitor? Is that overruling the ref and asking them to change their decision. We are definitely in for another season of pain.Exactly. If we are going to have VAR, it has to be effective. Things going to review and then being ignored by VAR because the bar isn’t high enough, despite it being objectively a bad decision, is just going to bring more frustration to everyone aside from the referee on the field.
It’s a tough one, he clearly tangled his legs on to the WH player but already cleared the ball before that. Soft one imo but you can see why they gave it.Surely that shouldn't be a penalty for West Ham. Cash plays the ball
Referee Rob Jones was shocking tonight. Allowed numerous fouls by Fulham players to go unpunished, as well as denying Amad and Maguire penalties in the first half.
Yeah, absolute bollocks. Didn't take long for the PL refereeing standards to be questioned. It's a joke every single bloody season.BBC…. “Hang on, just on that Everton no-penalty...

To stand there for that time, then walk away and make the rectangle symbol (“I’ve watched it back”) is pathetic. He’s purely gone with what VAR have told him and Howard Webb guaranteed that wouldn’t happen.Yeah, absolute bollocks. Didn't take long for the PL refereeing standards to be questioned. That’s appalling. They’ve obviously panicked and not known what to do but the onfield decision surely has to stand in that scenario. Was it a really clear error?
They’ve basically given up on VAR other than offsides and things the referee has not actually seen at all. Every VAR decision is going to be determined to be “referee’s call”.
It really is so fecking frustrating because they promised big changes and improvements off the back of last season’s cluster feck and rather than listening to the feedback they have ignored it completely and gone in the opposite direction, pretending that the narrative has always been that nobody likes the referee being overruled which is utter, utter bollocks. The only people who don’t like referees being overruled is referees. Everyone else just wants objective decisions.
The biggest gripe with VAR is that despite the technology they are still making bad decisions and this is only going to be exaggerated this season as VAR basically gives cover to whatever ridiculous decision is made on the field in the blink of an eye from a really shitty angle.
So the pretended to watch the screen?
Yes it was never a pen. DCL stands on the defender's ankle and then dives looking for a pen.
Ok, now watched it on MOTD and read into it a bit more. There’s a laptop on the ground apparently which Hooper was able to use as backup as the screen malfunctioned, so he did make the decision. Agree it wasn’t a penalty. Seems a sensible enough use of VAR in the circumstances, although it would be preferable for the ref to move the laptop into view if that happens in future, to avoid any suspicion he’s not actually seen anything.

Agreed. Minimal interference, what is this nonsense? Just interfere when the time comes to overturn a wrong decision. If that is required frequently, do it! It should be solely about making the correct call, not just blindly supporting whatever decision has been made on the pitch. These new VAR guidelines are horrible
Instead of VAR getting involved and sometimes agreeing with but sometimes disagreeing with wrong decisions, now they've just decided that VAR exists to agree with the ref no matter what.
Minimal interference is a ridiculous standard. The standard should be 'necessary interference'Agreed. Minimal interference, what is this nonsense?
