Van Gaal wants new defender

With our history of injured centre halves we will be well and truly stuffed if we don't sign anyone.

I'd like to see us buy one centre half only and give Michael Keane plenty of chances. I don't know why but I really have him down as one that'll train on well given the chance.

That's a Football Manager players list if I've ever seen one. Vertonghen is the best choice on there but with our history of buying players from Spurs we may as well not bother.
Unlikely since I haven't played it since CM01/02! Maybe I just know a lot about real life football!

With the history of injuries and lack of form in your back 3 (maybe excepting Evans from the 'form' comment) I'd say you need at least one and preferably two quality CBs this window.

I think Carrick would work really well in the back three. Would offer the chance to slip into a 433 when we have the ball. Something LVG will try at some point I'd say.

I'm probably going to get some stick for this but Ron Vlaar an option maybe?

Seems to be an awful lack of quality centre halves around at the moment. So much so that if we can't get Hummels or Benatia, we are probably better buying a back up to what we currently have.

Kept Villa up almost single handedly last season
So, doesn't mean he'll make the step up. Fellaini didn't, and he was one of Evertons best players. He's in a team a level below everton even, maybe more. Its only because we have LVG that we are linked with him at all.

Smalling
Jones
Evans
Vermalen (If we buy him)
Blackett
Keane

Doesn't look like a totally convincing selection right now but that could change so quickly. Jones was showing great potential from 2011-2013 and could have a beast season if injury free. Smalling for me is an assured and solid defender (Though not great with the ball at his feet) Evans also had a good couple of years from 2011-2013 and could pick up where he left off in the pre-Moyes era. Blackett looks a beast already.

Manolas would be the one I'd sign that or spend a fortune on getting Stones from Everton.

I'd like us go for Joël Matip at Schalke. 140ish games, 190+ cm, and he's only 22. He seems like a strong lad. Other candidates could be Stones, Dier (now at Spurs), Ranocchia, Umtiti.

Apart from Jones I think we've lost out on talented defenders recently. Zouma, Caulker, Chambers, Varane, Marquinhos.

Matip is a very average player

I would make a 30m offer for Stones

Stones agreed to a £30k/week deal. Had he gone to any top6 club, he'd doubled that, atleast. Good to see him and Barkley sticking to their roots and showing Roberto some loyalty.

It has only been a season we will see how loyal they will be over the coming years.

Exactly. Stones hasn't done enough to merit big interest from the big guns. If he has a great season this year, then we'll see if he sticks around with gigantic offers splattered across the table.

If we really were as close to getting Varane as claimed, that just about ruins the decade, I reckon. He's great, even if Hummels did make him look every bit as young as he is on that goal in the quarter-finals.

What do you mean by he hasnt done enough?. What is it he hasnt done enough of?.
When judging young players what is it you are judging them on?

My read of the situation AKA my guess is that LvG wanted Hummels and Vermaelen, but we've pulled out of the Vermaelen deal as LvG has decided to give Blackett a real go at LCB and Benatia is the alternative to Hummels which we've now conceded defeat on.

I'd be happier with Benatia than Hummels anyway tbh. I'd love to see Blackett get serious game time and it would be a really impressive show of commitment from Van Gaal to making one of his youngsters great. However, we still need somebody who's left footed as backup at the least, since Blackett is currently our only natural left footer (even if Evans can pretty much use either foot equally well). However, considering we had actually bid for Vermaeen, I don't really think this is the case. If Vermaelen has chosen Barca (which I'm not fully convinced of) then I doubt it was because of a lack of effort to get him on our part. I also don't believe the Benatia rumours as of now. As perfect as he would be, I feel we would have been linked more frequently if there was actual truth in the rumour. I'm honestly not convinced the media know a single thing about our transfer activity at this moment.

Think they both made smart choices, they are currently at a team who will push for CL places in the most competitive league in the world. They won't move down or sideways and if they move up, even abroad, you don't see where they would go to get as many games as they do.

Stones may creep into our current back 3, but not if Van Gaal signs anyone else.

Barkley is won't start games over Mata, Fabregas, Ozil/Ramsey, Silva and certainly won't go Liverpool.

Benatia and Blind would sort the defense just fine

We'd offered contract to Varane, but he publicly chose Real Madrid as we had Rio+Vidic & Jones Smalling Evans waiting to play, whilst Real Madrid only had some Castilla-players who werent good enough.

But Eric Dier at Sporting (now at Spurs) has done enough to merit a top6 move? Hardly. Merit never really plays a factor.

Yeah but I did read somewhere Roma are set to beat Juve to him. No idea how legit the reports are though..but if Roma are fighting to get him that would indicate them being open to selling I guess. They are after another defender as well who i can't seem to recollect now.

We still need a general at the back and I hope Louis will push things a lot harder to get whoever he wants, preferably Hummels. I don't mind us starting with Evans and Smalling in the back 3, but I cannot stand the idea of giving Jones a regular spot now because of the reckless challenges he makes (absolute brain farts); Jones ought to earn his spot rather than being handled it.
