Laporte would probably be the best player we could buy in terms of long-term investment. Doesn't have experience going for him, but LVG doesn't seem to care about that.

I think so. And only 23 years too.may be a little bit smaller but I quite like him. Also be once favorited a tweet about him being under United's radar. Being Spanish, he would settle rather quickly as well.
Inigo dropped off a lot this year though. He looked great the season before, but this year... Not so much. If we want Laporte we should just rob Bilbao of Iturraspe too, Liverpool/Southampton style.

The more LvG sees of how two footed Evans is, the more I hope he isn't in just for a LCB just because he's left footed (Vermaelen).

Vermalean would be a decent buy. Straightforward, reasonable price, experience in the Prem and not a youngster. He's good on the ball and in the air, he is prone to mistakes at the back but he doesn't need to be first choice.
Playing 3 at the back means we need quality back-up. We all know how injury prone Smalling/Jones and especially Evans are therefore we need someone who can plug the gaps and provide experience. Realistically you need 5 good CB's and a reserve/youngster to cover.
Jones/Smalling/Evans/Vermalean/Blackett/Keane and Shaw/Carrick if were desperate would be adequate enough. I would love to see the likes of Hummels/Benetia/Laporte here but I can't see it happening this summer so at the moment Vermalean fits the bill.

I only think we need one defender, as I don't want us to be overloaded if/when we convert back to four at the back.

While I remarked during the world cup and maintain that he's the definition of an average leftback, its also a position he doesn't play in for his club side. So with Marcos Rojo being mainly a CB who is just used at leftback when needed, he could be a decent option to add to the list

Laporte's new release clause is something in the € 40-45M range, right?
I should fecking hope so. We're so thin in that position and what we do have is iffy at times, seriously need an experienced head to replay Vidic, Ferdi and Evra.
I reckon Vermaelen + a no.6 midfielder who can also cover cb in an emergency.
Rojo is a good shout. I wouldn't mind him coming in at all. Also Inigo would be a great signing.
That list just doesn't fill me with confidence for a side aiming to be challenging for league and European titles. Red highlighted are injury prone, at least 1 will be injured at all times. Blue have no experience and i wouldnt feel safe having to call one of them into a starting role for a few weeks in the premier league to cover injury. rushing them in at this stage of their development (not age but experience wise) could shatter their confidence if they have a mare although i think at least 1 of the 2 will make it here at united.
That new signing needs to be an absolute worldie without a track record of injuries. i dont think Vermaelen is that player.
Benatia and Hummels would be the 2 dream signings, but both would cost over 40m. Probably around 50m to bring them in. So there's no chance for that. Vermaelan would be a decent signing if he found his old form and stayed clear of injuries, but other then that it's hard to think of who to buy there. A job for the scouts for sure though as we need to buy there.

Don't forget we still have other young promising CB in Thorpe who is a better CB than Blackett.7 CBs would be too much and ruin Keane's development.

Thats the one. Used to rate Abate until i found out he's 27 now. De sciglio would be a brilliant signing and could probably cover both wingback roles.

Of course said this in another thread that with the lack of numbers at the back including the two full/wingback positions that in an ideal world we could sign one player to cover the two. De sciglio would provide that. He's available and reasonable priced.

He is available for the right price and is miles better than Vermaelen or Miranda.... but he would cost 30M+
Abate could do the job for us at RB/RWB, he is fast, solid and doesnt spend half the season on the injury table like Rafael.
I myself am always saying we'll sign De Jong but more as a wum but there hasn't been anything to suggest we're after De Jong.
