Höwedes is a right footed right sided centerback, who played rightback a few times and was used as a leftback at the World Cup, but it's clearly not a position in which he's comfortable in. Usually Matip plays the left sided centerback at Schalke, when he's partnered with Höwedes.

Hector Moreno is left-footed, if you remember him from the world-cup. We've also been linked with Davide Astori, who's now on loan at Roma with a buy-option for them.
Also Martin Hinteregger from Salzburg, he's a complete rock for them, but I doubt he'd make it at United just yet, we have been linked with him 1-2 years ago though.
What this list doesn't show are CB's listed as both-footed, but apart from Boateng there aren't really some very good ones in it. Except for David Luiz.

Hector Moreno was a crucial part of Van Gaal's AZ Alkmaar team, no ?
He brought him to Alkmaar, didn't play that much of a big part I think.

Looks good every time i have seen him for Mexico, but seems to have a fractured fibula picked up vs Netherlands in that WC match right now.

If he has to be left-footed, and I doubt he have to, then the only option now surely has to be Vertonghen?
I don't believe in these Benatia rumours. He's a right footer, so I don't see why he's our back up to Vermaelen when our intention was to buy a left footed center back.

Makes the Vermaelen to Barca deal seem even more strange. So many better options out there they could (should) have been looking at.
Van Gaal has always had a record of left-footed centre-backs in a 4-3-3, so him wanting a left-footed centre-back in a 3-4-1-2 seems even more likely, the only one we got is Blackett, so he might look for a better, more experienced one.
Vertonghen would be the obvious choice, yeah, but Tottenham would probably want a fortune for him, we should at least try though IMO.
Talk was of interest in Hummels and Vermaelen. It wouldn't be outrageous to suggest LVG wants two defenders, one of them left footed. Blind and Benatia would be incredible.
So with Rojo signing seemingly very close now, wonder whether we will be after another defender as Van Gaal mentioned couple of times in plural needing defenders. If so wonder who ? Or will we settle with what we have ?
