Van De Beek | Everton Loan Watch

Wouldn’t surprise me if EtH plays him as a 10 with Bruno on the left like he did against Brentford.
Can definitely see Bruno playing that wide creator role, similar to how Tadic does for Ajax. Will be interesting to see how we set up in ETH’s first game in charge.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

Where would he play Sancho?

On the right maybe? Wouldn't surprise me if we don't buy a right winger this summer and we can't play Elanga there every match.

I think Sancho is more suited to that role than Bruno is tbh. Bruno doesn't keep the ball well enough.

Another player signed without being endorsed by scouts? The extract below from the Laurie Whitwell article (about Matt Judge leaving) sheds some light. And it wasn't like Donny was a shirt seller either.

Laurie Whitwell: "There are claims that United progressed a move for Donny van de Beek because Ajax made him available at an affordable price, rather than the midfielder being actively scouted and endorsed."

LW isn’t actually confirming it like he normally would if he was 100% sure, so you never know. Either way, there’s no better manager than Ten Hag to get the best out of him now that he’s actually here.

1 sub left. How crap is he if he isn't even a preferred option from the bench for such a rubbish team?

VDB is an average player. He's not going to turn into Messi just because ETH joins us. He had one good season in CL doesnt mean he is good. He'll have one good game and next 10 average. I think he's very frustrating player.
Next season if ETH doesnt pick him up then only people will realize that he is here just to fill numbers.

When are people going to admit that he wasn't even that good in that Ajax team? Whenever I watched them VDB was clearly the least talented of that front 4 (6 if you include the other midfielders)

Singlehandedly saved Everton from relegation with his legendary performance against Leeds. :wenger:

Who is taking decisions about his career? Going to United/Everton is just absurd. Eapecially Everton. I would be very suspicious of any player that can adapt to that Everton side this season. Its one of the worst level of football i saw in my life. They got nothing. Players just run and run and hoof the ball.

I think he’ll stick around for a season under ETH but I don’t think he’ll start big games and I don’t think he’ll stay long

It was between Everton and Palace and he chose Everton. Probably didn’t fancy potentially getting sucked into a relegation scrap. That back fired big time.

His wife is pregnant.

Alot of negative people will eat their words this time in 1 year about Donny here in the Caf.

You can quote me on this.

ETH is bringing the band back together!

Not negative, just sick of living in a fantasy land where 25 year old midfielders who can't get a game for Everton are suddenly going to transform us into a side capable of challenging Liverpool and City.

You know that after his debut he's been a starting midfielder right, all 5 matches that is. After his "first" injury he was going to start again, just to get injured again. Apparently he isn't fully fit yet, but he can get a game for Everton. You're the one living in a fantasy land where getting injured means you are benched because of your skill instead of being unavailable.

the responses to his games were terrible. He was getting slated on socials. He is a symbol of a dead generation of dutch "talent?"

I’m sure ETH will be the judge of whether he’s good enough or not. Remember Gini Wijnaldum that midfielder who was relegated with Newcastle? Went on to sign for Liverpool and played a part in transforming them into becoming champions? People took the piss out of that transfer at the time saying Liverpool won’t get anywhere with signings like that. Now I’m not saying it will go the same way for Donny but it’s never too late to kick on, I wouldn’t write him off just yet.

she had the baby in April no?:nervous:
yes, but he probably meant that he didn't have to move for his move to Everton or travel a long distance, so it would be easier with a pregnant wife to go for Everton. The suggestion that he didn't want to play in a relegation battle was one made by the media, so might not be true.

Wouldn't surprised me if he was used as no 10 with Bruno played as wide player or (if we sign FDJ) Donny plays in Schone role like a deeplying midfielder to keep it simple and stay on his midfield area while Bruno the one plays as the no 10. Schone was originally attacking mid and being converted as deeplying midfielder in 18/19 and ETH is known as a manager who tends to coach player in different role than what the player normall plays. Either way, it will be an interesting one to see how ETH is going to use Donny.

The obvious difference being Wijnaldum was the man at Newcastle. He scored 11 goals with 5 assists playing as the no 10 when they went down.

In contrast, Donny has been bang average for Everton.

Wijnaldum is also faster and capable of dribbling. Just an all round better player. Even last season he put in some flawless performances for Liverpool.

It was a shocking loan move. A team in freefall with zero decent performers and a toxic environment. Whoever came together to decide on that move, maybe him included, deserve a pasting.

I'm not holding his Everton stint against him in terms of performances / impact made.

I'd love to know what Ajax fans made of his performances in an Ajax jersey because I don't think its true that 'he wasn't even good for Ajax' either. Smacks of people just trying to show that they're 'more right' than everyone else.

What remains true is that he didn't do enough when he did have chances for us. He mainly sought to keep it tidy which isn't enough and he clearly didn't have the defensive awareness to operate as a 6.

He'll get a chance under EtH and I'm sure we'll see an improvement from him. Whether he makes the cut remains to be seen but people acting like its a foregone conclusion in either direction are pretending they know something that they can't possibly know. I don't know why people do that.

Yes they’re different players but the point is no one really thought that was a good signing a the time and were laughing at Liverpool signing him. Then with some quality coaching from Klopp he kicks on and looks a completely different player.

When Donny was playing under ETH he looked a completely different player to the one we’ve seen the last couple of seasons. Don’t write him off just yet is all I’m saying.

His CL performances were massively overstated so they are basing it on Eredivisie which I am not sure about getting excited over.

I don’t know what the shock is, in that Ajax team the outstanding talents were De Ligt and FDJ. Followed by Zyiech and Neres. Then came VDB.

Tadic was also a top 3 player in that squad and Onana was one of the key players and talents of that team.

That puts VDV as the 7th best player on a 11 man starting 11. What did you guys expect exactly? He was never a 5 star talent or even a 4 star talent, he’s more of a three star and that’s fine for a squad player but never to be a starting player.

With that being said at only 25 which people forget is still very young for a footballer he can come good abs prove everyone wrong…..I would not hold my breath though.

This is facts. People acting like he was FDJ or was like Sneidjer and VDV. Hardly anyone was excited about signing him as everyone was pissed FDJ was going Barca

No this is revisionist history. VDB was very good at Ajax. Always in the same conversation as De Jong and De Ligt, which might overrated him a bit, but no by that much as SportingCP96 claims. Just because a team has quite a lot of good players in a season doesn't mean that the 5th best player(VDB was that for me at least) is a bad player. By that logic the best player of Burnley is better than the 5th best of United, just because the Burnley player is number 1 and the United player number 5.

You can look up the stats, you can look up the compilations. VDB was just a very good player at Ajax because Ten Hag knew exactly how to use him.

It's nowhere near a given that VDB will be as useful for Ten Hag in England as he was in Holland. He might decide that he prefers Sancho in that role for instance (I think he'll use Bruno on the left wing).

Exactly. He was best in and around the penalty area playing one two's and scored quite a bit. If we used him so we would omit Bruno or use him a wide playmaker

Like absolutely every single player deserves: Let the new manager try to work with him and decide if he wants him in the squad.

Its entirely possible that Donny is someone who will thrive in less physical leagues like the dutch, but struggle somewhat in a more pacy league like the Premier League and especially against the "big six" teams in particular.

Donny hasnt done a lot with the minutes he has gotten, and has been outright underwhelming in a lot of them. Its only fair that he gets the same chance as everyone else to impress the new manager however. ETH and Donny have a previous working relationship that will of course be to his benefit

Less talented than Schone? Hyperbole much.
