Obama Administration’s Achievements (Thus Far) » Obama's Achievements Center

I'm sure this is very biased but worth a read nontheless.

Question for mjs, RD and all others living stateside or with the ability to vote (Raoul?). How big an issue is Israel for the electorate, the average Joe the Plumber on the street? Obama obviously mentioned how military co-operation has increased with Israel in his SotU speech. I know 80% of American Jews voted for the democrats last time, though I'm not sure if this is a general trend.

But when Obama says something like this, or Gingrich comes out with statements that would make even the likes of Lieberman cringe, is that for the benefit of the electorate or effectively just for AIPAC? And in my personal experience, American Jews actually tend to be quite liberal as a group. So are AIPAC also not generally in line with the views of American Jews?

Most of the people doesn't care, jobs and the economy been the most important issues for most voters.

Unfortunately its a major issue for most Americans. They tend to have strong feelings and consider Israel to be a political and religious ally.

It's sufficiently big to where you can't be President unless you're perceived as Israel friendly. Even Obama had to play the game in 08.

American Jews always vote for the Democrat. The only ethnic or religious group that voted for Obama in greater numbers was African Americans.

The reason is that, as you say, they're mostly liberals. (Of course there are plenty of conservative ones too, among the wealthy and the orthodox. But it's like 15-20 percent.)

I suspect the views of AIPAC are in line with those of many if not most American Jews, though less so among the younger generation. You may find this objectionable, but I don't think it's particularly different from the hawkish way Cuban Americans tend to think about Cuba, Armenian Americans about Armenia, or for that matter Palestinian Americans about Palestine.

But the key point is this: most US Jews don't vote in general elections based on the candidates' views on Israel. Republicans and conservative Jews are constantly baffled by the way the rest vote because they fail to understand this. They implicitly expect Jews to put another country's interests above America's - even though if anyone actually suggests that Jews do this they accuse them of being racist.

From an article on the Republicans' eternal Jewish problem:

a survey taken by J Street, which asked likely Jewish voters to check off the two issues, from a list of thirteen, “most important for you in deciding your vote for President and Congress this November.” Fifty-five percent chose the economy, 33 percent the war in Iraq, 15 percent energy, and 12 percent the environment. Just 8 percent chose Israel.

And anyway, the Dems are hardly anti-Israel and voters know it. Now, if a Republican demagogue managed to convince Jews at large that Israel was in danger of annihilation, and that only a vote for Republicans would stop this, then you might see some movement in their priorities. Which is what they're trying to do.

But ultimately it's not the Jewish vote they're playing for - that's only about 2% of the population. Israel is sacred ground to many evangelical voters.

Obama likened to disgraced ship captain
January 30, 2012 - 2:43PM

Top Republican official Reince Priebus has sparked a political uproar by comparing President Barack Obama to disgraced Italian ship captain Francesco Schettino.

Commenting on tough exchanges between Republicans vying to face Obama in November, the Republican National Committee chairman told CBS the focus would soon shift to Obama.

"In a few months, this is all going to be ancient history and we're going to talk about our own little Captain Schettino, which is President Obama, who is abandoning the ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as president."

Asked by the interviewer to clarify his remarks, Priebus went further.

"I called him Captain Schettino, you know, the captain that fled the ship in Italy. That's our own president, who is fleeing the American people and not doing his job and running around the country and campaigning."

Schettino became infamous around the world this month when his Costa Concordia ship liner run aground, killing at least 16 people.

Schettino is accused of being responsible and of fleeing the stricken ship before his passengers were safe.

The comparison to Obama prompted indignation among Democrats, with the Democratic National Committee describing it as "shameful".

Democratic strategist Donna Brazile described the comments as "misleading", and "shameful and disgraceful".

Abandoning the country to campaign...for shame Barack..for shame....

 Apparently Priebus is involved with Gov Walker in Wisconsin and several acquaintances have been arrested for various illicit activities, including campaign related stuff. Priebus is a dick, not for the comments, but because of his name. Seriously, Reince Priebus? It's ridiculous! Maybe he'll get arrested for entertainment's sake.

He's not as visibile as Token was when he was the chair of the RNC. It probably helps that not everything he says is completely retarded, like Michael Steele.

Token was the biggest sham - has there ever been such a transparent attempt? Ohh a black guy got elected president, 90% of black votes went to him, we better get our own black guy.

The Kansas House Speaker has suggested that his GOP colleagues recite this biblical curse at the President:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.

They've got some serious issues. I'm suspicious of the way all Republicans who dislike Obama are accused of racism, because Clinton was hated too. But what explains the level of hatred? It can't just be mandated healthcare.

I have to agree, the only thing I can think of to explain the level of vitriol is race. The rhetoric has gone up three notches since he came into office, it's scary.

For such prayers, what they pray will come upon them and their own children.

I hope when it does....they will have the wisdom to realise...why.

feck's sake. What ever happened to just asking people to vote for the other guy?

I think racism has a lot to do with many peoples dislike of Obama. You have to remember there are lots of people in the US, especially in the south, that were raised with a certain amount of segregation. Its hard to shake off how you were raised. My wife has worked with black nurses that remember having to work on wards in separate buildings that only had black patients.

The UK never really had segregation as such although racism still existed.

Newt adverts out numbering Romney's by a large margin today. Probably too little too late but maybe enough to get a small swing back in Newt's favor.

US National Debt is an issue this year, and the perception is GOP Presidents spend less and manage the economy better:

Carter: 653 to 930 billion (42% in 4 years)
Reagan: 930 to 2700 billion (190% in 8 years)
Bush: 2700 to 4177 billion (54% in 4 years)
Clinton: 4177 to 5622 billion (35% in 8 years)
GW: 5622 to 10,699 billion (91% in 8 years)
Obama 10,699 to 16,000 billion (est) (50% in four years)

Clinton is hands down the best President of the last 30+ years

Hey, DETAILS MAN, details. By virtue of W. Bush in 2008 and Hoover in 1929, the GOP will never, on the whole, manage the economy better than Democrats.

Does someone have the link to the ny times 538 weighted poll for the whole country? I can't find it for the life of me, and I don't want to read back through 30 pages to find it in here!

Thanks.

Looking at their ages wondering how old Romney must be if he spent a few years in France in the sixties, you wouldn't believe there was only four years between he and Gingrich would you? (64 and 68)

The GOP would be better served if everyone withdrew and let Romney take the nomination.

Is he 64? feck me, tens of millions of pounds can buy you some serious youth

I thought he was about 52

I always thought that but when I considered he was running for things in the eighties and did his Vietnam protesting (by which I mean protesting against the protesters) I realised he had to be much older.

Looks like that might happen now by default. Reports are a dominant victory from Romney. This will certainly be the end for Santorum I'd think. Paul will hang on until the bitter end just to get his message out.

Looking like more for Romney than Gingrich and Santorum combined at the minute?

Are you teasing me?

That's the main page, but at some point I found a link that showed their personal composite totals for a group of polls, and below in small size were all the polls they used and how much they were weighted. There were no articles on the page as i recall.

If you click 'poll watch' you get articles about polls, but I just want to see their numbers for the overall national numbers for the republican primaries.

edit: This isn't the one i saw, it doesn't have the weighted poll combining the others, but here:

Plech, Raoul and mjs, thanks for your answers. That article was very interesting.

The Secret Service will be providing Romney security from tomorrow. That is usually reserved for the winner of the nomination, and it doesn't occur until the race is over.

I like Newt's new slogan - "46 states to go", trouble being that he's apparently only on the ballot in 44 of them

What I find hilarious is the proliferation of ridiculous news channels we have seen in recent years - people all talk about Fox News but they have nothing on Russia Today, some of the discussion points about the presidential race, US domestic politics and foreign relations are absolutely ridiculous.
