One analyst on CNN this morning....billions spent just to retain the Status Quo in Washington DC. One way to look at it. House stays Repub control. Senate and White House stay with the Dems.

Also, Obama the first Democrat since FDR to win two terms and get over 50% of the vote each time, according to one news show I watched this morning. Of course since FDR trying to think of how many Dems held the White House for two ELECTED terms and it basically is Clinton (who was under 50% both times), so probably not much to the stat.

To put the money spent in perspective Americans spend more on Halloween than all political spending combined.

Why are so many Republicans BAT SHIT CRAZY?

My wife's best friend has said some absolutely insane stuff about Obama over the last few days. She is mentally unstable and needs locking up.

Meanwhile in British politics....

I dont recall when the international general population reacted so positively - almost in an "I won" way - to when a US President got elected. Speaks volumes about how this man has managed to connect with the non-American global public as well.

2-term Obama. I think he is going to rock in this 2nd term and take no prisoners. The US should be a very exciting place to be for the next 25 months.

In Barack Obama, the world now trusts for more peaceful and prosperous times in the next 4 years.

It's not as much Obama, as it is fear of the GOP. I'd agree though, the reaction has been hugely jubilant on most of my facebook/twitter feed from people who've never even been to America! I personally got very drunk last night.

As swag as BO Barackus might be, it's far more a case of the Republicans and their hawkish reactionary far right pride in ignorance approach to politics really worrying people, because we all do have a stake in who runs this place geo-politically.

For all the silly "Obama's made us a laughing stock" nonsense - demonstrating again just how little they're aware of external opinion - the rest of the World, and specifically left leaning Europe, are terrified of the GOP. They represent a step backwards. This was sort of considered their last chance to go all bat shit and Confederate before the shifting demographics make their appeal to the old white majority redundant...So in a way, it was a BIG deal for the social agenda worldwide, despite the fact nothing will actually change that much. Or indeed at all.

Precisely.

Nicely put.

Feels a bit like that now. But I suspect in 4 years time, assuming they havent changed, we will all be shitting ourselves about the GOP again, and how they can feck the world over.

Yeah, they'll be just as batshit in 2016. They know that if they can court the hispanic vote next time they can be as crazy as they want.

Always thought Portland was the most Liberal city in the US. Bizarre, hipster hive.

Correct on all counts. I live in (the People's Republic of) SE Portland, which is the most of liberal bit of Portland. Swell place despite the hipster infestation (they're not that bad).

This Puerto Rico thing is crazy. They can't just add another state! Think of all the flag stitching that will need to be done!

That was a glorious night. Only slight dampener is that Bachmann got narrowly re-elected. Infinitesimally slight though.

Solid job to RD as well on his unswerving prediction of 332 for Obama. You truly are the Drew Linzer of caftards.

This is why its important these feckers dont win elections, pricks like O'Reilly and other relics from the bronze age.

I expected to hear the usual anti-black, anti-hispanic rubbish but was he really suggesting that women also have a sense of entitlement? feck's sake, yet another group to add to the list of GOP enemies then...

ta mate.

I was bitterly disappointed about that loon surviving.

but hey..the entire Minnesota legislature including the Governorship is under Democrat control.

So I am happy :)

Aren't they already on their list?

I mean they want to decide for themselves what happens with their body and starting to make demands to leave the kitchen.

No true republican could stand for that.

I guess trophy wives don't count as women.

Can an American please explain why the Republicans got spanked so badly in Michigan, given Romney was previously Top Dog there?

It was almost the biggest majority win in a state for Obama ... a bit like Jed Bartlett getting hounded naked out of New Hampshire.

The auto industry "bail out" and Romney's reaction to it is probably a good part of the reason.

Democratic super-majority now in place in California. The Governor has widespread support....the next few years will be interesting. The republican party is close to being extinct here.

Congratulations to America. I was worried at first and doubted Nate Silver but there was no need. It was fun watching FOX a little bit last night; they really are a bunch of wingnuts on the right.

Biden/Clinton 2016. They win, Biden retires half way through due to health and Clinton becomes first woman President???

If Biden runs in 2016 I'll support his Republican counterpart by default, even if it is Paul Pott reincarnate.

Feck, looks like Bachmann squeaked out a victory.....although that utter idiot Allen West got bounced which is definitely a consolation.

Fox was amazing. Karl Rove kept arguing for a solid hour or so after it had been decided by every single other news source that Obama won.

Fox still haven't given this up by the way. They keep going over to Florida where Obama is leading with 99% of the votes in, and saying it's "still too close to call", and therefore it's still not a known thing yet. Then they switch to the studio talking about how another four years of Obama will be. They are all over the palce.

I don't think they've completed the absentee ballots yet, not sure how many of those there are but it's presumably possible for him to overtake still. Seems doubtful though.
