Lara Logan talking about al-Qaeda, Taliban and the war in Afghanistan. Very interesting stuff. She talks about how Afghanistan is not at all comparable to Vietnam, and Pakistan's role in the war, among other things. Plus, she's fit.

"Our way of life is under attack. And if you think that's government propaganda, if you think that's nonsense, if you think that's war-mongering - you're not listening to what the people who are fighting you say about this fight."

It was spectacularly stupid to go to Afghanistan in the first place, for many of the reasons she's listing. Leaving is much better than doubling down, imho.

Disagree. The US had to eradicate Al Qaeda after 9/11 (and prior incidents) to show terrorists that the US would respond and the game had changed.

The downfall was turning our (US) back on the country to focus on Iraq.

Religious, far right-wing extremist "friend" on FB... downright baffling post. This is the nutty side of the GOP support base, which is probably a sizeable percentage. Scary.

"IT IS GETTING CLOSER. PRAYERS PEEPS PRAYERS. GODS WILL BE DONE AND I HOPE HIS WILL IS A ROMNEY WIN. I PRAY GOD GIVES THIS NATION A CHANCE TO BRING US BACK TO WHAT IT WAS FOUNDED UNDER. HIM. FAITH."

poor fella does not know a mormon is not a Christian.

So yes God's will be done.

Obama/Biden 2012 ;)

Two new polls on RCP have pushed their average to plus 0.8% to Romney. If you look at the last 30 days on their average page you can see a very definite pattern and change of momentum, which might be hard to reverse at this stage.

Looks like it will be a very tense election night with nothing separating them in the national polls.

There isn't any momentum, it's been stable for a while now. The race looks about tied nationally, Obama has a small lead in the key swing states.

I'm not seeing much of an issue here. He's just answering carefully like any repub would. I think if he was asked directly if he supported booing a gay soldier he'd say no.

How anybody can even listen to that question as a Presidential candidate, and not be upset with the treatment of the gay man, disgusts me.

Just talking about that clip, the questioner didn't really ask him outright, and Romney was just being a little cagey. I don't think Romney personally cares for gays, but I also don't think he condones abusing one who's serving in a war.

Yes but the reason he can't just come out and say, "Of course I don't support people booing our soldiers in the field, regardless of what personal choices those men and women may have made that I or others disagree with" is because he doesn't want to alienate the bigots.

I havent watched it yet but does she dish out the "they hate our freedom" tripe? If so then she's talking out of her arse.

It seems to me like you're the expert Mark.

That's the idea.

Muslim fundamentalists actually do hate our freedom, though.

They hate the fact we're free yes, but they don't hate us because we're free.

This video answers it better than anyway I possibly could

I'm in no way excusing Islamic fundamentalism or the actions of AQ, Taliban et al, but I'm concerned that this Bush-esque misconception of 'freedom' being the prime reason is still doing the rounds. I wouldn't be surprised to hear Romney echoing that same, absurd line of thought in tonight's debate...probably blaming Obama for 'giving in' to their demands.

Is that Noam Chomsky spouting his usual masochistic vitriol? If so, he's talking out of his arse.

Back to the Presidential Election.

I wish it was Herman Cain. Or Bachmann. Or ass-semen. Or crazy old guy. Or "everyone agrees he is a smug prick". Or, heaven forbid, reasonable Republican. Or that other guy who was joked about being nondescript and boring, and whose name I ironically can't remember.

You left out thick, cowboy, jesus-freak.

My favourite moment of the Perry campaign was when he did the anti-gay video, wearing the Brokeback Mountain jacket.

Pawlenty is actually a fairly reasonable one. I thought he might do well until it became apparent that the repubs were going full retard.
