NPR ran a great segment of political adverts yesterday. They analyzed the claims and attacks by both parties. It appears both candidates are running adverts that are deliberately misleading and full of lies.

It’s interesting seeing this board and comparing it to a general board on a US football site. Here we have 95% of posters just dying to attack and laugh at Romney, yet on the US site is flipped the other way around.

After his comments, rumors are rife Christie will make a run in 2016 if (when) Romney loses this election. Thoughts on this fat bully running for the GOP side?

I just can't imagine people warming to that fat Traveller. Image is quite important to a lot of people.

I don't think he'll be running anywhere. Maybe waddling.

A fecking salad-dodger as POTUS....no way! If he has lap-band surgery in the next year or so then we'll know he's waddling for sure.

Sounds like Mitt's already making a big hit in his visit to England.

(However, we're sure he'll due much much much better in his fundraising ventures with the LIBOR crew.)

Mitt Romney Walks Back London Olympics Criticism

Mitt Romney, in his first trip abroad as the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, is trying to walk back comments he made questioning London's Olympics preparation -- comments that have drawn a sharp response from Prime Minister David Cameron.

The dustup began Wednesday, as Romney, who ran the 2002 Salt Lake City games, said there were "disconcerting" signs in the days before this year's games.

"The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials -- that obviously is not something which is encouraging," he told NBC News.

"Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? And that's something which we only find out once the games actually begin," he said.

Cameron soon rebuked Romney. "We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course, it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere," he said.

"I think we will show the whole world not just that we come together as a United Kingdom, but also we're extremely good at welcoming people from across the world," Cameron added. "I will obviously make those points to Mitt Romney. I look forward to meeting him . . . "

This's how ya do it, Mittens.

If Obama wins again, surely somebody with some sort of sense will be able to take the help of the GOP. Maybe it'll take some other grass roots approach. Perhaps a pull from potential centrists that might feel things drifting too far to the left.

I'm genuinely curious. The current state of their affairs is just too strange.

If Romney wins on the other hand... I suppose it will be more of the same.

I don't get all the Rubio love. When you examine his ideas he's nothing special. It's all about his fecking ethnicity....I can only presume that the GOP really want to win Florida and Texas in the future.

the difference is this guy wants to be president of the USA.

They are saying he is worse than Bush and Palin

Naaah, it's funny but he's nowhere near as thick as those two dolts. It does reveal a complete ignorance in foreign affairs though. It used to be that candidates would go on long world tours to learn about this sort of stuff. These days they just don't give a shit and leave it up to their foreign policy advisers to tell them what to think.

As someone once described him, Mitt Romney is the sort of guy who'd comfort grieving parents by pointing out that they could use the room for office space or a guest bedroom.

He just does't understand the intricacies of building relationships.

well his foreign policy advisers forgot to tell him who the Labour Leader was....

He'd already questioned the preparedness of Britain to host the Olympic Games and today Mitt Romney added to the gaffe-count of his UK visit by appearing to forget Ed Miliband's name during a press conference.

Speculation on the social networking site Twitter was centered on whether Mr Romney had forgotten the Labour leader's name - or didn't in fact know it in the first place.

At a press conference the possible-future-president of the United States referred to Ed Miliband as 'Mr Leader'.

Romney said: "Like you, Mr Leader, I look forward to our conversations this morning ... and recognise, of course, the unique relationship that exists between our nations, our commitment to common values, our commitment to peace in the world and our desire to see a stronger and growing economy."

Mr Romney had already been perilously close to offending his British hosts by questioning the preparedness of London for the Olympics.

Speaking to NBC news ahead of today's meetings Romney said, “It's hard to know just how well it will turn out.

“There are a few things that were disconcerting.

“The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials - that obviously is not something which is encouraging.”

He also questioned the British enthusiasm for the Olympics, asking: "Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? And that's something which we only find out once the Games actually begin." he said.

British Prime Minister, David Cameron, was later prompted to respond to Romney's comments saying: "We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere."

This appeared to be a reference to Utah, which was the site of the games that Romney managed.

Cameron, however, stopped short of criticising his US guest, telling reporters: "I think we'll show the whole world not just that we've come together as a United Kingdom, but also we're extremely good at welcoming people from across the world."

During the meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr Romney appeared to be backtracking on his earlier comments, saying of the security issues and the error over the North Korean team flag: "It is impossible for absolutely no mistakes to occur," he said.

"Of course there will be errors from time to time, but those are all overshadowed by the extraordinary demonstrations of courage, character and determination by the athletes."

“The Games are, after all, about the athletes, the volunteers and the people of the community who come together to celebrate those athletes.

“As soon as the Games begin, we all forget the organisers and focus on the athletes.”

Romney's visit to London also took in talks with George Osborne, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Labour leader Ed Miliband, former PM Tony Blair and MI6 chief Sir John Sawers.

Mr Romney, who was this evening holding a fund-raising dinner for supporters in London, said his meetings had been "enlightening and instructive".

My review of Romney's visit to the UK so far

This election really is going to be a question of who's the least worst candidate to most people isn't it?

I knew his trip to England would be a trainwreck, but I had no idea it would be so bad. He starts by offending the hosts of the Olympics by questioning their preparedness, mentions his secret meeting with MI6, forgets Ed Milliband's name(if he'd called him David, it would be understandable but just forgetting...), and is insulted by two members of the analogous party to the GOP. Outstanding.

I imagine once he gets to Israel he'll make holocaust jokes and call them "Heebs" and "shylocks." Then in Poland he'll make Polack jokes. He might start a war before he gets back. Who knows?

Edit: I forgot that he also commented on how Obama doesn't understand the "Anglo-Saxon" heritage that the US and UK share or its importance. Not racist at all.

His gaffs will have zero impact on US voters. They elected GW so Mitt is bullet proof.

His gaffs will have zero impact on US voters. They elected GW so Mitt is bullet proof.

On most voters, that's true because he could dropkick a baby into a burning pit and they'd still vote for him over Obama.

His gaffes are a bigger problem than they were for W though. Romney isn't a very likable or relatable guy. Bush could say something stupid but people still liked him. Romney can't spend a day in another country without insulting them, which will be a draw for some voters, but for any independents it'll be a turn off. He doesn't look presidential on this trip. He looks like a moron. Bush knew enough not to piss off your hosts as soon as you get off the plane. He was at least an amiable guy.

I could have gone on this trip and not pissed off everyone, known who the leader of the Labour party is, not made racist arguments, and figured out that I shouldn't mention a meeting with MI6.

No one likes him anyway, but this won't help him at all. I don't think he understands how to relate to people. Maybe he has Asbergers or something.

Gaffes in general are irrelevant. This (not that Romney actually said anything insulting or even false) will have as much effect as Obama's made-up "you didn't build that" 'gaffe': none at all.

In fact almost all the chatter about the elections is pretty inconsequential - gaffes, debates, a new poll out in Virginia saying X, even Romney's vice-presidential pick (assuming it's not another total nutjob). All else being equal, the election will come down to whether the economy can maintain a bit of forward momentum.

Spanish bond yields went up past seven this week, the polls closed. Mario Draghi made some vague cryptic nod towards rescuing the periphery, Obama ticked up again. I'm not trying to big us Europeans up as important to Americans or anything, but it so happens that we're total idiots in the process of crashing the global economy, and that is currently the key fact. It doesn't make for interesting news cycles, but there it is.

The Romney trip to Britain has been embarrassing for him in British circles and may have further distanced Cameron from the Republicans on a personal level, however domestically its use would be as part of a larger narrative than anything truly damaging by itself. This being that when combined with his actual written foreign policies, he has little to recommend him in place of Obama.

There was some theory on the TV last night he intentionally ruffled feathers in the UK to satisfy the tea party types. But they don't give a damn what happens over here, or most places overseas right?
