US Politics

@Raoul - Do you think this was a reason why Corker was having second thoughts and was reconsidering his retirement decision? He'll have seen the internal polling and didn't think Blackburn was a credible GOP candidate.

Not sure if this was the reason. He has had a rocky past 12 months - first being on the Trump train and originally being in the mix for the SecState job, then falling out with Trump on Twitter, then going silent on Trump, then floating the idea that he may run for reelection after claiming he was done. At the end of the day, it sounds like a guy who has generally soured on politics and wants to return to a normal life where he can earn a bit of money.

Idiots spouting secession crack me up. Good luck defending your state as the US is no longer required to guard you, and if said DoD pull out there's a huge unemployment spike coming. Say good bye to all that sweet federal money. South Carolina receives/d the most from DC.

So rumours that Paul Ryan will step down? Is that a good or bad thing overall, if he does?

Depends what way you look at it. Ryan's a soulless, smarmy neocon arsehole, but if he's stepping down then it signifies that the tea party/Trump supporting nutters have really gained full control of the party. Hopefully the house flips Dem though and it doesn't really matter.

It's clearly a ridiculously proposition that won't go anywhere, but the fact it's even being suggested should probably be seen as an indictment of how bad things are in the US right now.

If he's not running, it'll be interesting to see if he starts pushing back against Trump. I doubt it because he's an invertebrate but we can live in hope.

Its been obvious for a while now he was going to take the cowardly way out and retire as he'll have seen the internal polling and knows how dire things are looking for the GOP.

Thank f*ck for that. Probably the worst of all of em, because he pretends to a decent person, unlike Trump and McConnell who are honest about how disgusting and immoral they are.

I think this was always his intention. The GOP's agenda for this Presidency was to roll back as many regulations as they could from the Obama era and fix taxes in favour of corporations.

He will move back into the private sector now, no doubt making absolutely huge money from one of the lobbyists he's worked so hard to please.

Then no doubt look to run in 24'/28' when he's re-branded himself as a successful politician who made a fortune in the private sector as a successful businessman.

That may well be his intention, but he's going to remain a toxic figure for a long time to come and people wont forget about his actions.

I'm sure he decided this a long time ago. There was a rumor he was retiring as far back as late last year, which he quickly squashed because he knew it would take the wind out of the GOP policy sails on tax reform and other things.

Nah he'll just pull the same stunt Rubio pulled and make the mainstream Republicans beg before running anyways. He has that "I never needed this job but you asked me so I'm here" martyrdom down to a tee.

His primary opponent is an openly antisemitic full Nazi, it's a R+20 district. The main opposition is a Berniecrat union worker. This is going to be intense.

Nehlen wont win. We'll now see multiple establishment republicans announce they're running for the seat.

It will be hard for the GOP to hold on to the house at this point. The question now is how much of an advantage the Dems will carry into the next House. If things get ugly they could pick up as many as 50-60 seats.
