Immigrants who face possible deportation can be held by the federal government for months or even years without the chance to go to court and seek bail, a bitterly divided U.S. Supreme Court said Tuesday.
The court rejected an appeals court ruling that said immigrants who've been detained must be allowed a bond hearing every six months. Justice Samuel Alito, who wrote Tuesday's decision, said the appeals court reading of federal law is implausible, amounting to a rewriting of the relevant statutes.
Nothing in the text of those laws "even hints that those provisions restrict detention every six months," he wrote. Instead, the law gives immigration authorities time to determine whether an immigrant presents a danger "without running the risk of the alien's either absconding or engaging in criminal activity before a final decision can be made."

In a sign of how passionately the court's liberals disagreed, Justice Stephen Breyer summarized their dissent in the courtroom. "Liberty has included the right of a confined, unconvicted person to seek release on bail," he said.
He was joined in dissent by Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor. Elena Kagan did not participate in the case because of an undisclosed conflict, most likely stemming from her work on the issue as solicitor general during the Obama administration.
Still way too close to even get excited.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, who rarely hides his true thoughts, summed up what is really going on. When Franklin, for Illinois, suggested that states had an interest in negotiating with a “stable, responsible, independent counter-party,” Kennedy all but exploded:
It can be a partner with you in advocating for a greater size workforce, against privatization, against merit promotion, against—for teacher tenure, for higher wages, for massive government, for increasing bonded indebtedness, for increasing taxes? That’s—that’s the interest the state has?
A few minutes later, Kennedy asked Frederick, representing the union, the question that seems to be foremost on his mind. If the Court rules against the union, “the unions will have less political influence, yes or no?”
“Yes,” Frederick said, “they will have less influence.”
Kennedy replied: “Isn’t that the end of this case?”
Can someone explain to me why Billy Graham gets this honor.
In late December, two Republican lawmakers stepped down from the Wisconsin legislature to join Gov. Scott Walker’s administration.
Their seats, in Assembly District 42 and Senate District 1, have sat empty ever since — and are likely to stay that way until January of 2019.
In a remarkable break from precedent, Walker announced at the time that he would not hold special elections in those districts, leaving 229,904 Wisconsinites without representation for almost a year.
Walker’s office has said it’s not worth the cost or effort to hold the votes, since regular congressional races will take place in November. But Democrats and their allies say Walker is just scared to lose.
I love you Bernie
Pls don't die before 2024
What is he saying about Syrian children?
Ted Cruz’s nightmare is real: Blue voters up 105 percent in Texas

What's the point of him then?
Bernie is left even for European standards. Not far left (like for example Hollande in France was), but still left. Obama and Clintons, in Europe would have been considered centrists. Bill Clinton maybe even center-right. Even moderate GOP people like Bush, Romney or Kasich, would have been considered in Europe far right, with the likes of Trump, Cruz and co. unconstitutional/fascists. It is amazing how different the cultures are, despite that both are part of the Western world. There is no point to him. Another false Democrat. Or actually, a Democrat, but false Liberal or Progressive. The same as Ms Gabbard and her objection to signing the ban on assault rifles bill. Too many of these so called Democrats fall short in key areas.
This is where the two party system fails so badly. The Dems are split as are the Republicans. Far right lunatics and the saner more agreeable centre right compared to the left and then the centrists who could easily sway either way. I honestly don't think there are really any far left politicians or voters in the USA. Not compared to what I would call far left anyway. And to be honest. Left to me is rational and sane. Wanting equality for everyone, the same rights and wanting society as a whole to provide the basic human rights such as healthcare and education as well as services like the police and fire whilst also judging criminals as a society and agreeing on fair and humane punishment.. well I think those are normal rational ideals and not some wacky zany leftist mumbo jumbo it gets painted as being.
Bernie is left even for European standards. .
