US Politics

Most people who until recently were in jail for espionage tend to get it from both sides.

The eagerness with which both sides jail people for telling the unfortunate truth shows how much mainstream democrats have in common with republicans then... It still speaks volumes that people vilify Manning without ever mentioning or condemning the behavior he helped uncover.

Don Lemon is such an awful journalist. Whenever his guests talk policy, statistics, history or delve into specifics, he interrupts them. He then talks down to people he doesn't agree with and says what he thinks. The whole debate on his show should be only about what he thinks. If the discussion remotely veers from what his opinion on the matter being discussed is, he interrupts and says what he thinks.

Horrible, horrible presenter. Even Bill Maher has a tendency to do that sometimes. They must learn from Andrew Neil, David Dimbleby, Stephen Sackur and other good presenters.

One off videos aren't really the issue as there are thousands of documents Manning released that were run of the mill with little value to the general public and merely help foreign adversaries like the Russians and others to figure out certain things like sources and methods to prevent future collection. Nor is this an issue of Dems vs Republicans. Manning was a deeply troubled individual who was convicted of espionage and should've at a minimum been in prison for life. One of the charges even could've resulted in his execution. Hopefully Trump will look into all legal avenues to undo what Obama did and get Manning behind bars again.

I agree that Lemon is terrible. He seems to have some deep seeded personal issues about him that cause him to get emotional and dramatic. I'm hoping CNN see the light of day and get more of Cuomo in the evenings.

A bit like the conspiracy theory that the Russians hacked the DNC and Hillary campaigns and funneled their loot to Assange for tactical delivery throughout the campaign.

The issue is the conduct of US military in foreign countries. Manning risked his life and freedom to enable us (and the US public) to know what the US military was up to. Considering that what he uncovered is so grotesquely unethical I argue we deserved to know.

Cuomo is definitely much better. I quite like Erin Burnett as well. She allows the discussion to flow without interrupting as much as some of the others.

I stopped watching Morning Joe because Scarborough would interrupt anything and everyone who even dares to open their mouth. Poor Mika barely has anything to do. She just quietly sits there sipping her drink or Starbucks coffee.

Mark Halperin is fired and Willey is off to NBC.

No its not. There are far worse things that happen in war zones that the public never sees. Nobody cares about the video at this point. The question now is whether Manning should be walking around free after committing espionage a decade ago. It is not Manning's job to act as a self-aggandizing Assange stooge. He signed specific documents that releasing classified information to the public could result in punishment under the UCMJ, which is precisely what happened. This is not a "whistleblwoing" case. Its a case of treason and espionage for which the guilty party should be at a minimum in jail for life.

I still watch Morning Joe. Its been interesting watching Scarborough's political arc change in recent years. He swept into DC in the 90s during Gingrich's Contract with America as a conservative and is now basically out of the Republican party because of Trump (being engaged to Mika probably also has a bit to do with it).

I simply disagree. Pointing to worse things elsewhere is not a defense.

Lemon isn't that bad to be fair. He's just had it with people using his show to spew lies and untruths and it seems like over the past few months he's not allowing his guests to shift the goalposts during the debates. He's emotional at times and seems to take things personally but I do like the way stops his guests saying untruths.

Agreed, Coumo needs more airtime. His background as a lawyer does give him an edge during tense debates.

That's true to a degree, but Lemon is pretty clumsy with guests who don't answer or duck questions. He tries to force them to answer, occasionally cuts their mikes, or abruptly goes to break in his unique drama queenish way. Anderson on the other hand, is a bit more nuanced and less rude in the way he tries to pull answers out of people. That's the difference between a good host and a mediocre one. They know how to deal with guests without looking like they themselves are losing the plot.

I like Don Lemon, and love how passionate he gets but I do agree that he often tends to fill his shows with people who just repeat and confirm his views. He needs to change it up a little. I also agree that Coumo needs his own show too. Chris and Anderson are my favourites and the coverage the pair did on the hurricane last year was some of the best reporting I have seen for a very, very long time.

Classic example of Lemon squandering an entire segment by arguing with a guest who simply wanted to finish making his point.

I used to watch it daily for a year leading into the presidential election. They would skewer the DNC, Debbie Wasserman and Hillary. It was very informative. They used to cover Bernie quite fairly. They became heavily anti Trump after the face lift tweet.

Check out the Morning Joe parodies on SNL. Quite funny.

They were fairly anti-Trump during the election as well, which is what led Trump to make the tweet in the first place. Mika was constantly questioning him in the months leading up to November, despite the fact that both Joe and Mika had known Trump for years, which is what caused the face lift tweet.

I watched The Post yesterday, and the Ellsberg v Manning & Snowden comparison comes to mind. I'm reminded of what Mark Bowden wrote way back (https://www.theatlantic.com/politic...manning-dont-understand-about-secrecy/278973/) about the "wholesale" nature of what Manning in particular did, vs Ellsberg leaking it to the NYT & Wapo who in turn could filter and write about the items most egregious and relevant to the public. When wikileaks was out you could read all about unethical actions of the govt, but you also compromised some of the back-channel comms that US embassies the world over had with local politicians as part of regular business.

On Snowden, he did leak via journalists, but him ending up in Russia of all places is a bit damning. If he'd stayed in the US and fought his case in court and in public opinion, as Ellsberg did, he might seem more genuine.

Treason and espionage would insinuate some sort of collusion with an adversarial faction or looking to deliberately undermine the nation's security. I don't think that was Manning's intent. Nor was it Elsberg's.

Out of interest, what you consider to be a bona fide act of whistleblowing?
