Reading this QA with Rep Don Bacon this morning was actually refreshing simply because it seems sane. And not the stupid talking points blaming Biden or Democrats for clear GOP issues with their own caucus. You’ve called out the Freedom Caucus and its influence and obstruction on who leads the House, but I want you to help me think about this. What is the Freedom Caucus doing that is working for them? Why is it working? Why are they doing this?
Well, it’s not all the Freedom Caucus. In other words, it’s fragments of it. But they’re driving very conservative bills out of the House. For example, on the debt ceiling, we passed a very conservative bill that was a negotiating position, and they thought that should be the final bill, but you’ve got to work with the Senate.
I find a lot of them don’t realize how our government really works. They think they can actually force the Senate to do their bidding, and we all know that this place operates on consensus and middle ground. When it’s all said and done, especially when you’re talking about negotiating the Senate version, versus the House version, you’re going to get something in the middle. I’ve talked to some of them — they do not accept that premise. Their feet are not on the ground. I think a lot of these guys play to the clicks. If you live in an echo chamber and you’re only talking to people that agree with you, I think, well, you have an unrealistic view of what’s going on, then.
Gonna be a busy day in the Willis office fielding all the calls & responding to all the emails of the rest of the accuseds' lawyers begging to flip.News finally trickling out. 6 years probation, a letter of apology to Georgia, testimony against others. Sounds like a smart deal all around.
You don't say.
After some ruminating, getting Powell to flip would be a seismically baller move by Willis. She is in the top level of the conspiracy, there's other defendants who are at her level as well, but there's no one above her minus the president.

Raoul, can we get these posts into the Donald Trump thread?Gonna be a busy day in the Willis office fielding all the calls & responding to all the emails of the rest of the accuseds' lawyers begging to flip.
Must be clear now to him he isn't going to get the votes periodJim Jordan is set to announce that he will not seek a Thursday third ballot in the speaker race and instead support a plan to let Acting Speaker Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) run the House temporarily.
The Ohio Republican's decision, confirmed by a person familiar with the matter, comes as he faced an insurmountable path to the top gavel. It's a remarkable victory for centrists who crafted the proposal to empower McHenry, who didn't seek out the speakership.
And backtracking for no-coalition governmentJordan set to stop speaker balloting, support powers for McHenry

A bit of the relief if this is the next speaker:
Really relieved as I was getting worried about MAGA extremists taking over and cutting the aid to Ukraine.
Mccarthy's speech had me laughing out loud while in the grocery store.Done for a 3rd time. Didn't make it past the D's.

No - that would be Double D'sTitle of your sex tape?
They tried this before, after a few weeks only the radical Heritage Foundation wanted the shut down to continue as Republicans were blamed by most people, despite their attempt to blame Democrats.Government shutdown is probably happening at this rate, and prolonged one at that.
Right-wing media will no doubt try to gaslight americans to believe it was actually dems that shut the government down, hopefully they will fail.

Or the GOP could work with the Dems and elect a speaker who can maintain a coalition within their own party because the disconnect in the GOP means that's never happening on the GOP sideThis is just embarrassing for the GOP, and more importantly, bad for the country.
At this stage, the Democrats should just help the GOP elect a Speaker assuming there is an agreement to fund the government and no impeachment. Of course, not Jim Jordan or anyone like him, but someone more reasonable.
I'm really struggling to understand why the Democrats are just sitting back and watching the trainwreck unfold. Surely if you want to claim to be the responsible ones you reach out to the moderate Republicans and get a more bipartisan Speaker elected? Obviously the Freedom Caucus are responsible for this mess but aren't the Democrats getting an easy ride for showing no willingness to solve the situation and get the country back on track? This is just embarrassing for the GOP, and more importantly, bad for the country.

Jeffries said this morning they are happy to do so. He even named McHenry as someone they might support. The problem is they don’t get to chose the GOP nominee.I'm really struggling to understand why the Democrats are just sitting back and watching the trainwreck unfold. I don't think it would happen eitherI don't think that is happening, far too many extreme republicans in the house to accept a coalition speaker, and the few ones not that extreme, are probably scared, either electorally or for their lives, to vote for such a speaker.
Prolonged government shutdown looks likely.
That's easy to say now when they had the chance with Scalise who would have been a tolerable option.Jeffries said this morning they are happy to do so. He even named McHenry as someone they might support. The problem is they don’t get to chose the GOP nominee.

It's not quite as simple as that, the nutjobs are responsible for this mess as you say, they also have the power to use the "motion to vacate" in this session because it is one of the rules they insisted on that got McCarthy elected, any Speaker that Dem's and moderate Republican's could agree on wouldn't likely be acceptable to the likes of Gaetz and the other hardliners, so they would just take it in turn to use the motion and force votes every 5 mins and there would be nothing that anyone could do - and gaetz would love that scenario!I'm really struggling to understand why the Democrats are just sitting back and watching the trainwreck unfold. I assumed that rule was specific to the McCarthy speakership? Does that rule then apply for the entirety of this term? What would it take to change it?It's not quite as simple as that, the nutjobs are responsible for this mess as you say, they also have the power to use the "motion to vacate" in this session because it is one of the rules they insisted on that got McCarthy elected, any Speaker that Dem's and moderate Republican's could agree on wouldn't likely be acceptable to the likes of Gaetz and the other hardliners, so they would just take it in turn to use the motion and force votes every 5 mins and there would be nothing that anyone could do - and gaetz would love that scenario!
You don't need to a be a member of the house to be Speaker, if you or I could get the requisite number of votes we could be speakerI understand they nominate their own nominee, but, what happens if someone gets the majority of the vote in the house, someone who isn't a nominee of either party?
I mean, select few house members have voted for people who aren't relevant, their votes are still counted, they are not blank votes, right?
