US Politics

Apparently a bunch of tories (Republicans and other pro-Trump tories) on Twitter are quite triggered since yesterday with a photo montage from last year, showing Boebert and Greene on the upper half of the montage... and 2 sex dolls (a brunette and a blonde) on the bottom half. Who are the snowflakes now?

Someone should photoshop him into Leo's face for Catch Me If You Can.

Failed Republican candidate for governor of Arizona, Kari Lake, delivered a stump speech in Iowa on Friday and while declaring her absolute support for Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, she also argued that if “elections were really fair,” the GOP would control the White House, House, the Senate, and “all the state governorships.”

As polarisation worsens their only solution will be to call for and normalise violence. They are slowly, slowly seeking normalise the idea that a democrat winning an election in any situation is illegitimate.

I'd say trump's base is already there. Now it's about normalising it for the other "conservatives" that just bleat about it online.

Was there a media blackout on this? I haven't seen much of anything of this on CNN-International while in Germany, only a brief mention of it and of the reporter being arrested (some official stated he was against the arrest), cannot state what the US-based network news are speaking.

I guess it could be censorship, but another possibility is that there just isn't really a story and that the "toxic cloud" is a conspiracy theory.

More likely the latter, or more so just not on the Chernobyl level. Pretty sure these other international news channels I have access to - BBC, AJ, a French news, etc.- would be covering a significant Chernobyl-light in the US.

A mini-Bhopal? Depending on what is in that cloud it could be worse
Population is far less than Bophal, more rural of an area.

But you are correct that the released gases could be more harmful than what was released in India. Thankfully it doesn't seem that way.

Wait. Hold on.

1. The legal age is currently below 16?!

2. They don’t want to change this?!
Eight states have no official minimum age, but still require either parental consent, court approval or both: California, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.

I am surprised to see California and Washington are there.

Welcome to thr bewildering laws of the USA, in some State(s) you can get married at 14 though it requires parental and judicial approval

I was surprised too and found this article on it:
Was surprised at seeing Planned Parenthood oppose it.

In 2018, California Sen. Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) proposed a law, SB 273, that would have barred all marriages under age 18. The proposal faced unexpected pushback from several civil rights groups, including Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Children’s Law Center of California.

In a statement opposing the proposed ban, the ACLU said California already has sufficient legal and policy protections in place to protect youth from abuse, and that the data did not indicate that coerced marriage of minors is a widespread problem. Enacting the ban on marriages of minors could drive young people already in abusive relationships further underground, and parents intent on coercing minor children into marriage could simply resort to unofficial ceremonies — away from the scrutiny of the courts. Additionally, removing the option to marry before age 18 could prevent young people who want to marry from doing so, the organization said.

“We know from our work with parenting students that becoming a parent is often a motivator for youth, helping them set new life and educational goals,” the statement said. “Denying these young people the right to marry — without compelling evidence that it will solve an existing problem — further stigmatizes their relationships and tells them they can’t make healthy decisions for themselves and their families.”

Once married, minors in California also become emancipated, allowing them to divorce, hire an attorney and access services for adults, the ACLU said. This is not the case in all states.

Ultimately, lawmakers voted to allow marriages involving minors to continue, but they strengthened the review process for petitions involving youth under age 18. Stipulations include requiring family court staff to interview the parties intending to marry and the parents or guardian separately. Staff also must report to the county’s Child Protective Services office if they suspect abuse or coercion.
