US Politics

The more I think about it, the only valid reason republicans have for not believing her is because they think she's lying and/or is acting in front of the world. It's a very cynical position to take but it's understandable at least from that perspective.

All this shite I'm seeing about 'I believe she was abused/raped/hurt but I don't think she's got the right man' doesn't wash at all for me. Given the stakes at play here for both him and for her - I don't think there's a lot of grey area.

Yep, the nonsense idea that she has mistakenly identified the wrong guy just gives them a way of rebutting her accusation without the bad optics of outright calling her a liar.

Either she or Kavanaugh is lying, there's no middle ground.

Probably a bit pointless in libcafe, but I'll just put these two here and go and hide somewhere safe

"This is because Its not just about baby killing. Kavanaugh is against everything the far left believes in. This will take them back further on gun confiscation and socialism as well. The left must not win or America is doomed."

This comment under that conspiracy looney's video speaks volumes on why the GOP does not care if Kavanaugh is guilty. It's Roe vs Wade and that's all that matters. He could've gang raped an entire family of baby seals and they'd still vote him in to overturn it.

Kavanagh being dropped like a hot potato this morning by people and groups that had formerly endorsed him. Not for his guilt but for his refusal to accede to a full investigation for transparency purposes to clear him before the vote.

Reports this morning that The Catholic weekly "American Magazine" are withdrawing their endorsement and probably most damagingly the American Bar Association – the very organisation he quoted in his testimony yesterday as being unanimous in it's support for him.

All too late now though. They are just covering themselves as he's pretty much in.

Well we can be 100% certain that she has not got the wrong guy. If someone sexually/ physically traumatises you their face and name will be forever imprinted on your mind.

Every single senator that votes for or supports Kavanagh without a full investigation should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves and if the US people don’t vote them out at the first opportunity then they have only themselves to blame for the ridiculous mess that calls itself the US government.

Flake by name flake by nature. He answers to one person ,his donors .The swamp really needs draining and not the slogan Trump likes to throw around.

Flake going down the presumption of innocence line. Which is entirely irrelevant. Worse he says that bar is high enough for a scotus which is absurd.

But hey gotta pay for that retirement somehow.

Incredible. This nomination and subsequent confirmation will be an infamous and notorious piece of history in the future.
All that matters is women showing up in November.

Does a supreme court judge in America not have at least the air of objectivity? Such an openly partisan person surely is unfit for the role?

Any objectivity within the SC was lost a long time ago, if it indeed ever existed.

That's the optimistic view. Even if Murkowski, Collins, and Flake peel off and vote no, they may still fall short if the likes of Manchin, Heidtkamp, etc vote yes.
They may as well quite the Dems if they vote yes

Indeed he is!

Diabolical that they allowed Ford to give testimony and then decided to completely ignore it or somehow deem it untrue. If there was any doubt whatsoever the vote should have been delayed to investigate the matter properly and fairly in a balanced way.

By pushing it through the way they have they have left themselves open to the inevitable shitstorm that is no doubt on the horizon.

On the one hand this may not shock a lot of America considering they were more than happy to vote for Trump in 2016, but if anything it'll perhaps allow those who aren't engaged or don't care to see that it isn't just Trump that's the problem - indeed it's an entire political wing that won't go away unless they're properly voted out.

I admit that I do not follow US politics up close, and just recently tuned in to the Kavanaugh story.
fwiw, my original thoughts were that just because of the doubts surrounding the accusations, he should withdraw his nomination.
But the fact that pro-democrats decided that the accuser is automatically 100% right, bothers me, especially under these circumstances, where everything is politically driven - on both sides.
Just look itt how every comment is taking Dr Ford's accusations as the absolute truth and Kavanaugh's version as bs. How many of you are republicans?
As a neutral, I would be a lot more prone to side with the democrats if they brought the case forward a lot sooner - which they could.
It's clear they used all the tricks in the book in an attempt to derail the nomination, on the 11th hour, in the hope of buying enough time to regain majority in the midterms.
Bottom line, this is US politics and, in this instance, the democrats (seem to) happen to be on the losing side.

Grassley’s voice goes through me, had to change the channel.

But only one side is asking for an FBI investigation to get to the truth.

Kavanagh was repeatedly asked yesterday in testimony if he would welcome an FBI investigation to clear his name. He repeatedly deflected the question with questions of his own (something he apparently never let go in his own courtroom) and the final time of asking he just sat red faced silently seething with his lips pursed.

I mean it's clearly about much more than that.

If he's innocent then he'd be fine with an FBI investigation. There aren't really any benefits for Ford in bringing this story forward unless it's the truth, unless you believe she's involved in some detailed conspiracy where she's willing to essentially put herself in danger for a slightly improved chance of the Dems doing well in November. That doesn't automatically mean she has to be telling the truth but her story seems to check out and the unwillingness of the Republicans to do all they can to get to the bottom of this is embarrassing.

America is not a real place.
Funny you should say that:

Quote from Guardian rolling coverage:
Vermont senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, is up and comparing the situation to Alice in Wonderland.
Leahy says the judiciary committee is no longer an independent branch of government.
“We are an arm, a very weak arm, of the Trump White House,” Leahy says.

As a Scandinavian i always thought republicans were unhinged loons, and when i thought they could not get any worse, they still manage to surprise me. They really are a rotten bunch
