£58 million for this Martial kid is a big joke. All these other stipulations are BS, I can't believe people think that this a great signing.

I don't think it is unpopular, 58m is a joke, but he is a great potential that can play right away.

£58 million isn't a big joke at all, because having to pay £58 million would mean that he's won the Ballon D'Or, league top scorer etc.

I agree that its not a great signing as things stand.

I think we all agree the fee is ridiculously overpriced. But this kid has been making good progress, getting into the team last season, to playing regularly to being one of the key players for Monaco to getting into the national team frame. He has been showing progress match after match and considering we are no longer the best destination for players if Real, Barca come up for him, it makes sense to go for him. Of course, this doesn't justify the price tag but that is the risk we have to take rather than losing out on player and thinking what might have been over the next decade.

If it becomes 58 million that means he was top scorer 3 times and won the balon dor. I'd pay 58 for that.

What I can understand being thought a joke is the initial 21 we share paying and the eventual 36 Monaco will get.

Mata has played him in a few times (especially in the Newcastle game) and he was wasteful. Agree on the most part though, we offer absolutely nothing from the right - and that's down to both Mata and Darmian IMO.

Mostly Mata who checks inside every time he receives the ball!

end of the day, in this day and age with how Footballers are, to get the best out of anyone (which will lead to success) you have to man manage them properly. Make then feel loved and in return they will enjoy their game and confidence will be high including scoring goals (the thing we are mostly lacking currently) Im not comparing them interms of time or trophy haul. But fact remains that SAF would have had them same bunch of players firing on all cylinders, not hinder their game, make them lose confidence and enjoyment for the sport and make them feel like they want to get out of this club and away from him ASAP.

Van Gaal takes no prisoners in his approach, and you will find that this style will only work on the minority of players. The Majority, especially when superstar type players, will respond and react badly and instead of getting the class potential and play from said player, they play like shit and want out due in part from Row's with Van Gaal.

I'm sorry, I didn't know how knowledgable you were when it comes to managing a squad of professional footballers, my mistake. If only Van Gaal knew as well as you what it take to manage a football team.

You're talking nonsense mate, it's hilarious how a few testimonies from a few bad eggs who've happened to cross paths with LvG at some Point become gospel while all the praise he gets from other players who've worked under him such as Xavi, Iniesta, Seedorf for example (you know, people who aren't complete assholes themselves) is completely ignored. In reality I could most likely round up just as many names slandering SAF as I could LvG.

Stoichkov, Cruyff, Koeman and Ribery among other sooking about van gaal makes a better story for the media instead of Xavi, Iniesta, Seedorf and the de Boer twins saying positive about van Gaal.

£58m is indeed a joke.

Everyone can play right away but the devil's in the details. What can he bring in and how long it takes for him to fit in and gel (bearing in mind the philosophy can be hard to understand right away as evidenced by seeing our existing players perform and we are into Louis' second season!).

Youngsters need to be nurtured and protected and it will be a huge mistake to place a unreasonable amount of burden on him (and Depay for that matter) to expect instance success. One more defeat will be quite unthinkable at early stage because it can be very demoralising.

He is still very young and learning and not many on our team are experienced enough to take care of him on and off the pitch. Assuming he's not proficient in English, there's also one more thing to cope and take care of

Agree that Mata is at fault. But look at our good run in March/April last year - Valencia was getting into a lot better positions than Darmian is currently (granted they amounted to nothing as Valencia has no end product). I think another factor is the lack of Herrera on the right of the midfield too

well in 3 years, after all he has spent and all the stars he had at his disposal, and we still havent won anything or even finished anywhere near our rivals. Then perhaps people will realise that the praise he was due, was long ago. And he hasnt won anything or done anything of note for years.

He's been here for a bit over a year, not 3 years

Not done anything for years  Clearer and clearer your agenda becomes...

Most of our supporters (on this forum specifically) are just as batshit crazy as any other team in world football.

Judging by this thread, I'd say that thinking Mata is one of our most key, and most productive player is sort of becoming an unpopular opinion. Far from perfect and he can also be immensely frustrating sometimes, but I rate him highly and think he's done okay so far.

The Martial fee is ridiculous, if this was any other team we would be pissing ourselves laughing that they were robbed. That clause is absolute BS, why does Memphis not have such a clause, he's showed more promise and is only 2 years older.

Monaco took the absolute pisstake because even at £36million we paid £20million more than we should have. We spend £36million on Martial but dither to pay £21million for Pedro.

Martial is no Neymar that has enough commercial appeal either. Monaco already took us to the cleaners with that £36 million fee. I don't blame Martial because he himself doesn't believes he's worth that much. Might as well have bid £58 million for Lewandowski or Benzema if we were going to sanction such an amount.

We were all giggling at what was spent on Sterling and De Bruyne.

Yea holy shit, now that's unpopular opinion.

90% of the caf says we've overpaid.

My unpopular opinion is that the Martial fee is the going rate for a player with as much potential as he has and when other teams are sniffing around. If we were buying a young Rooney today he would cost 50-60 million maybe more so o believe the Martial fee is now the current rate given rapid inflation. It remains to be seen if he will fulfill the potential surrounding this fee tho

was the Supercup with bayern munich in 2010. Thats 5 years nearly 6 ago...... anything more than 1 year is, you know "years" which is what I said.

That is fecking awful and only the most ardent philosophy followers can argue that they've seen big improvements. If the league wasn't so shit last year we don't make top 4.

Moyes was still crap, I was depressed when he was our manager

how can anyone judge the fee before we see Martial play?

If he rips the league up, it'll be a good buy.
If he stinks it out and looks worse than Rooney at his sluggish most unfit worst, then erm..the opposite

It's like circumstance doesn't mean anything to you
Moyes took over champions, Van Gaal picked up a shell.

As for wins/draws/losses/points. They need to be taken in the context of the league. Moyes came 7th and Van Gaal came 4th. How is that not seen as improvement?

Do people not realise that over 50% of martial's fee depends on add ons ?

The initial payment to monaco was 21m according to the journalist that leaked the info about him signing.

Under Van Gaal we got 14 Points against the top 4 compared to Moyes' 5. We were a fecking joke against any kind of decent opposition with Moyes, at least we got some respect back last year.

Context is key.

Someone needs to call mourinho and tell him last season title win doesn't count as success. Apparently he won only because everyone else were shit.

That's not true, 50m€ are guaranteed.

Oh come on.

Again, I'm not even a fan of LVG but you have to be intelligent enough to apply context to each season when comparing them. Moyes finished 7th with champions and had no long term vision for the club, LVG has a vision.

This is basic guys, if we're going to moan about LVG lets at least be objective in our criticisms.

4th place in the 13/14 season was 79 points. 4th place in the 14/15 season was 70 points. We ended up with 64 points in 13/14 which would have gotten us 5th place in the 14/15 season. In the context of the league, last season it was shit and we should have done much better. It's ok though, Moyes was Scottish and therefore a dinosaur, LVG is continental and can do no wrong.

Moyes' figures are skewed heavily by our performance in CL.

League vs League comparison, LVG has massively improved us.

Our performances against the top 6 has improved also. And I have faith in our CL run to go pretty far.

other years don't matter.

My local boys Wycombe, in league 2 last year got the amount of points that would have won the league the year before, but had to settle for the playoffs.
Position is all that matters, not points.

I'm glad we've gotten rid of the deadwood.

And I'm excited & optimistic for the rest of the season.

I could be wrong but it almost sounds like you want him to fail.

That's not true at all really. He managed Holland for 3 years before taking over United so i hope you are not taking those years into account because that would be silly, are you?

Before that he won the Double and almost the treble at Bayern, and won the dutch league at AZ a team that had only won their league once and hadn't won any trophy in almost 30 years.

3 trophies in 6 years with four of those years at a relatively small club like AZ is pretty impressive in my opinion.

And a third place in a World Cup.
